Six injured in Laval rave club shooting

Canadian Press
Monday, September 02, 2002

LAVAL, Que. (CP) _ Two gang members known to police were questioned Monday about an early-morning shooting at a local rave club that injured at least six people, including one seriously.

Laval police chief Jean-Pierre Gariepy said the two suspects, who were among the group of young people, were members of street gangs.

``We identified street gang members who were involved in the confrontation inside the building,'' he told the all-news French-language network LCN.

About 3,000 people were inside the Red Lite club when one or more suspects fired nine shots at about 5 a.m. EDT, police said.

The incident allegedly took place after a group of about a dozen people were chased by security guards after entering the building.

More than 100 officers encircled the warehouse building while others investigated inside in one of the largest police operations in Laval, one of Quebec's largest cities.

Fearing armed suspects may still be inside the building, police questioned and searched the youths for weapons as they filed past a police cordon.

``No weapons have been found so far,'' said police spokesman Guy Lajeunesse.

Police expected it would take hours to empty the building and conduct a thorough search.

The injured people sustained shots to the back, thorax, leg, arm and chest.

``The six people were in stable condition, conscious and alert when we arrived, except one person whose hospital destination was changed because his condition deteriorated a little bit,'' said ambulance spokesman Laurent Poitras.

One person was shot three times in the back but he wasn't the most gravely injured.

Hours after the shooting, ambulances continued to remove people from the building in stretchers and victims were taken to hospital.

Witnesses said panic overcame the partygoers as they attempted to flee the scene of the shooting.

``I heard the shots and saw a girl on the ground,'' a male teen told LCN. ``I then saw a guy with a bullet in his arm, another one was shot in the chest, another in the leg.''

Many others said, however, that they didn't hear the shots above the loud music.

Even as police continued their investigation, music could be heard coming from inside the facility, located in a remote area of an industrial park.

People must realise that nothing can be done to prevent such horrible events. But remember folks, guns don't kill people, people kill people.

People kill people? No. Gun's don't kill people either, unless you hit someone really hard with it. I blame the bullets. No one ever blames the bullets.

What are you fucking stupid Paul???
Nothing can be done to prevent such horrible events???
Where the fuck have you been?
Try tighter security, mandatory ID checks, a crackdownon on biker activity inside the club and searches before entering.
Red Lite most certainly isnt' a representative of the rave scene to those in it, but in the media, it is the rave scene.
SO instead of whining and saying that sucks (and this offer extends to more then just Paul) try raising awarness in your community, spreading anti-violence messages. Try supporting organizations like AMP (montreal promoteurs association)who work hard to validate permits and hold up security hand in hand with the montreal police force, so that we can dance safely.
There is always something we can do. The question is, how many of us will?

well seeing as the bikers are so involved in the club scene (this isn't a rave by any means) these kind of violent shootings are enevitable.

Places like redlite are a goldmine for dealers and with dealers comes violence,

It also helps a little if security is even remotely competent. I don't know how they are at Red Lite, but if it's anything like it was at Level it's a freakin' joke. I was at the front of the line waiting to get in, I spent a half hour waiting for the doors to open talking to the security guys and when they let us in, the security inside was gonna search me and the guys from outside said "It's ok, he's cool" and they let me through. Not even a pat-down. As long as you're friendly no one hassles you.
Now here's a great idea: Invest in metal detectors at the door. Those big ones that are the size of a door frame like they have at air ports. And advertise that their there. Of course that leads to the other problem: The people with guns outside know that the people coming out are un-armed.

they should have an E detector, and when someone walks in with E a large metal prod shocks them very violently.

i agree with amber. things like better searches can prevent people getting weapons into clubs or raves. it is inevitable that people will some how get drugs into raves and clubs but weapons are harder to find. more in depth frisks could help the situation

Weapons are harder to find?! Uhmm... How big are pills really? I hid peach in my zippo. I doubt you could get a gun in that easily. It's a little harder to conceal and the only sure-fire way to hide say a gun from the most in-depth search would involve a LOT of determination, a plastic bag, lots of KY and learning to walk funny. Knives are a little easier, but then again all it takes is a propper pat-down to find it.

i find it interesting how on the news they talk about how there was a shooting at an after hours club.. then near the end of the report they bring up how there's a lot of drugs taken at raves... i pause and think... what the hell do the two have to do with each other..

Amber, perhaps you are not informed on what is actually goin on. Red Lite is owned by bikers. Most clubs are. As soon as someone ventures away from our real rave scene and enters the club scene, lots of things change.

Afterhours clubs attract clubbers who come in all personalities as opposed to the PLUR (well... as close as it gets) found amongst ravers. Not all people go to afterhours clubs for the uptempo dance music. A lot of them go because they want to try something new, a lot of them go to try new drugs, a lot of them try to get laid ... not the best of reasons. These are the kind of people that normally hang out in other clubs, where violence isn't uncommon (Dome, etc). So once in a while, they bring along their attitude and "weaponry" and cause trouble at afterhours clubs and even raves.

Another realistic way to interpret this event is that people don't shoot people for no reason. This is no excuse for violence, but just another way to look at it. Personnally, i wouldn't feel unsafe going there after such an event mainly because i haven't done anything to anyone to deserve such a thing, and i wouldn't be surprised to see that place filled to capacity next weekend. Bikers = organised crime. If Red Lite superiors want something to happen, they'll organise it, be it by bypassing security or having someone shot in the middle of the dancefloor.

And amber, don't get me wrong, if i knew how to support some kind of organisation like the AMP, i'd do it. Promoting parties is something that i will try soon enough and security is one of our main concerns. But if you think 2 big guys at the door of a club is a surefire way of preventing such events, you're dreaming in color.

first of all, spooky is a boy

second, i meant to say weapons are easier to find than pills.

third, i agree that having big men standing at the entrance to a club does not make it any safer than a rave

and lastly, how do you know about any of this if you've never gone to a party? and how do you plan to start promoting for one if you've never experienced on for yourself?
