when i play records, all of it is paid for .. 'cause it's real hard to DL and burn onto vinyl XD

and CD's, a good 50% is paid for, 30% is given to me, 20% DLed 'cause the tracks are hard to find or unavailable to me - those then to be the kind of music that the artist would be real happy to know that i'm playing out ... (and when i played shitty clubs for cash, well, all that pop crap i stole off the 'net, 'cause i'd shoot myself in the face before paying for that shit)

i'm not totally against DLing tracks for free to play, depending on the availability of the tunes, but i most definitely frown upon ppl who only play DLed mp3's, if not just for the sake of sound quality, and most DJs will agree.

anyway, this has already been discussed to death, and gets real circular ...
I'm feeling you up right now..

I do, I don't play out things I get for free cause I can't be bothered with them. They are probably tunes I will never play out in my life (perhaps give a listen to). And if I get dubplates I wait until they're out to play them anywhere.

20% of DJ's here play by the rules 100%. Still doesn't mean that can't learn from their mistakes, wake up and start paying their dues.

As if you don't have a pirated copy of windows, office and photoshop... People making music can make money by touring. Data is free in most parts of the world besides the USA. Don't be brainwashed!

[ glabella.org ]

Make an account, 0 Day Music Being Released! Keep up to date! Anyone can be a DJ now! But not everyone can make their own music.

There are tones of sites like these online. Just search Google!

[ coda.fm ] <-- Here is a good site to download FREE CDs!

It's kind of hard to tell someone not to make copies of things. Computers were designed so that information can be copied easily. Don't tell me I can't do what the computer I bought was designed to do.

Ektoplazm has it right. I bet you all the people giving away their music are getting bookings because people want to hear their stuff!

speaking for myself, everything is legit. everything I've ever played out at gigs or on mixtapes is 100% legit. The only thing that isn't legit is the odd movie samples I drop into a mix here or there.

I pay for almost all my music - which is almost all vinyl. The music I don't pay for are tracks given to me personally by the producer who made em. and if they are unreleased, I would only play that track on a mix CD if I have permission from them. Sometimes if the tune is about to be released, or for copyright issues, they might decide they don't want it put on any recording, and you have to respect that.

once or twice, if I'm trying to get a mix done ASAP, and I can't find my copy of a record or whatever, I'll get a friend to rip me a .wav of their vinyl. That way I don't have to wait months to find a copy and get it shipped to me. I did that for 2 tracks on my last mix. For the one tune, I couldn't find my copy - it was AWOL.. the other tune, I wanted to end the mix with it as the outro tune. but the record is so rare, it sells for at least 300 british pounds, and that's if you can even find a copy.. and I just refuse to pay that much money for it.. so my friend ripped me a .wav =) I don't mind doing that, cuz I pay dues.

but - the point being.. on the tracklisting, I clearly point out what tracks were given to me on .wav ->

It's important to me, cuz a lot of those tunes cost a fortune nowadays. So there's a lot of scandalous DJs who see really rare valuable tunes on youtube. They can't resist the temptation, so they rip the mp3 and put them in mixes as though they bought the vinyl - trying to pose like they're serious cratediggers

Way back in the day, the only way you could play the tune is if you had the vinyl or the dubplate - but the game's changed now, and there's a lot of frauds. That's why I keep everything by the book, to distinguish myself from those chumps.

You should not be playing MP3 files out on a large sound system anyways. If you want to be professional, play the WAV... But if you are doing it for fun or practicing, why not copy the degraded music data...

yeah, information is free, and we're all happy about that.

i find it really cool that there are alot of musicians willing to give their music away, and right, it's also good for promo. i put tracks up here for free DL all the time for you guys :)

thing is, some people would still like to make some money back from all the time and effort they put into making music. (it's hard work!) and so? they have that right. you can't walk into HMV, grab some CDs and walk out telling the security guard "nah, no worries mate, music is free, so thnx" ...

as for programs, well, i'm on linux right now, where people make stuff on purpose for the sake of having it be free ... most people can't afford 600$ music programs, but fuck, you should be able to afford a 20$ CD if DJing is a career for you. and, as stated, shitty mp3's sound like shit on a big sound-system (even a small one, imo).

i say, steal pop, and buy underground - turn them fucking tables 'round ;)

I never ever played a track I didn't purchase. If i did, it's because the artist himself sent me his track so i could play it , or it was a free download. If your friends only plays tracks they don't buy well.... they are assholes! No producer = no dj's.

As for noah, i buy 320 kpbs quality mp3 and nobody noticed the difference really. Since all my tracks are in the same quality range it doesn't affect much , it's less expensive but the main reason is WAV takes too much place in a hardrive.

gotta admit i'm surprised n pretty happy to hear that the dj's keep it real ^^

i find it depends on the quality really, some mp3's to wav's sound the same where others sound like complete shit 'shrugs'

another good site for DLing tracks that artists put up for free, is right here on [ rave.ca ] ! all locals! XD

btw, Kire, you have to understand that your statement seemed like an accusation that most ravewaving DJs never buy our tunes, and since Moloch is friends with alot of us DJs, he's bound to react ...

I was suposed to have Gig and multiverse so i buyed some of the music i wanted to play. Some other tracks were given to me by some Producer by request.I also illegaly downled some tune. Im always trying to help artist in their carrer, but im not really rich either.

Giving away is music is good for promotion like on ektoplazmn, and aniway artist dont makes lots of money for their track, they mostly get it from the show they give (I think so ?)

[ zardonicrecs.netii.net ]

free netlabel for mostly hard and heavy DnB! The Rare Grooves compilations are more chill/different than the usual insane hard stuff, but it's all good quality!

[ www.blackhoe-recordings.com ] another mostly free hard DnB/hardcore netlabel
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..
