Noah, there's a full English translation of the article available on this website.
It's not nearly as bad as you think. It's not a serious piece, he was being snide/funny, and he wasn't complaining about all English people. Notice how he mentions "Les Anglaises"? He's specifically referring to a group of English women who live next door to his place. If he wanted to insult all English people, he'd have written "Les Anglais".

It really does sound like he's got a bit of racism going there.. who cares that the people playing soccer are latino? Who cares that the people BBQing are asian? Who cares that the women being loud are anglo?
The whole thing with pointing out the latinos and chinese is like people saying "my best friend is black, so I'm not racist..." and then go on and say some racist bullshit. The whole thing at the start and end of his article have absolutely nothing to do with the body of it, and it really DOES look like he's trying to get a racist word in where it really doesn't belong.

I don't get that vibe from his piece at all. He's describing an afternoon on the Mountain being enjoyed by a melting pot of smiling happy people. He's not insulting any of them, and even his comment about his loud neighbours is lighthearted.
He hightlights how people from different walks of life all enjoy the mountain -- latinos, asians, young people, old people, Francophones and Anglophones. His point is that the Mountain is a jewel that's enjoyed by all Montrealers, and that we all have an interest in keeping it beautiful. The guy definitely has a narrative reason for mentioning race, gender, and age: he's being inclusive, and is implying that we all have a stake in the Mountain's future, regardless of our own personal backgrounds.

yeah.. the latinos are playing soccer, the chinese are cooking something that smells great, but fucking loudmouth anglos always ruin shit because all anglos are always loud and can't have fun without being loud, annoying douchebags.
Nope, nothing racist about that.

Dude, chill.
The guy was joking. JOKING. He wasn't being critical of ALL English people, under ALL circumstances, at ALL times, forever and ever. He was making a few lighthearted comments about his neighbors. Then, in obvious jest, he said that English women are louder than French women. CALL THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION! Obviously, the guy is a racist devil douchebag from hell because he joked about English women being louder than French women. Let's tie him to a cross and burn him!

Then why did he even bring race/language into it? He could have just said that his neighbors were being annoyingly loud, but no he had to point out that his ANGLO neighbors were being annoyingly loud, and then adds in that ALL anglos are always annoyingly loud when they have fun.
Stereotype much? Hell, latinos playing soccer? Wow, hey that's not a stereotype at all. Asians making awesome food that smells great? Nope, no stereotype there.. Just because they're not negative doesn't take away from the fact that he's peppering racial stereotypes into an article where they absolutely don't belong, just like the rest of the fucking frogs.

Change the settings to a festival of different subcultures like, Vans Warp tour, then replace the ethnicities with those subcultures like: punks, skinheads, skanker (or whatever the amateurs of that lame music are called), rockabillies, goths (are there even real goths in Montreal?!), ... Would it be discriminatory?

well.. I really need to learn French too (Quebecois first, and later, when I move over there, the way they speak it in France) - just because I think I should . there's no excuse
however - I really dont like it when people refer to people who speak English in Canada as "the English" or "English people" English refers to a nation and an ethnic group. the only people who are English are some people living in England. People need to read history books a bit more... |

Wikipedia entries for English"> ] Canadian. Update » Scipio wrote on Tue May 25, 2010 @ 11:05pm English-Canadian is the proper nomenclature, and we use English as shorthand for it, especially in Quebec. It's a regional thing, it's common usage here.
Also, 6,500,000 Canadians are ethnically English..

This article isnt racist or else,it isnt that bad, but i think that yes, it could be perceived as being borderline discriminatory to some people. Especially coming from and old french canadian man. I know i woulndt have writen such a article. Some old french canadian people really are taking every opportunitys they have to put down english people and immgrants. This is repulsive.
Recoil : when i say '' english people '' i try to translate '' anglophone '' wich means, people who speak english, i just dont know what's the proper english word for it lol

The guy's just writing about how we should preserve our beautiful parks, especially from architectural mistakes. His description of his enjoyment of this Monday afternoon might be a little "categorical", in the sense that he classifies people using stereotypes...
As for the English being loud, it's true, from a stereotypical viewpoint... at least for French people, the cultural difference of voice pitch and volume is obvious! This is just a general observation and doesn't mean "this or that is better"... you could also observe that Anglo people are more easy-going than Francos, which makes Francos look like they're constantly PMS-ing :)
