I am a liscenced insurance broker and I can tell you, driving lessons are not mandetory but having one allows you a driving record 3 instead of 2 when you have your G2 or learners and it provides a discount with some insurance companies. usually ones geared towards younger drivers as clients.
Not every school is same, thats like saying every high school is the same 1 school that stands out is young drivers not only because it is heavily supported by the government but also because alot of the teachers are retired teachers, not just somebody with a good driving record, so they know how to teach any type of person. As we all know everyone learns differently and thats a good quality to have
The best bet would to find a school that not only offers the regular in class/with 30 hours of in car but also someone that teachs defensive winter driving.
Young drivers provides that and so do other more reputable schools.
They can flood and freeze large parking lots and let you feel what its like to spin out of control. Thats very impirtant as most claims it seems happens in the winter from not knowing how to react in snow/ice conditions

No matter how much you pay really, you will make the money back with the savings you get in , insurance.
The amount people pay for insurance without drivers and with is insane. $1000's difference.

I remember one kid he was 19 and bought a 1989 toyota tercel and i had to quote him $6700/yr for minimum insurance.
I told him to park the tercel , do the drivers and his insurance would go down to around 3000$/yr

Oh and no one ever buy a tercel they are high in, insurance in general haha. Shit cars

yea, i don't even need a car if/when i get my license. just will need it from time to time if i need to move stuff with a rented vehicle n shit like that. I'd also like to get a job doing deliveries etc, so it would def come in handy lol.

as far as insurance goes, i need to get some for my new apt... any suggestions what a good company might be, and how much it may cost yearly?

yeah, i went to one of those, they didnt taught me anbything about driving in the rain in verdun at 7 am after a very long party with eyes as big as some 2$ lol

As for insurrance discount, it's not that big of a deal if you're above 25yrs old or something i think? If driving lessons arent mandatory, i'd say dont pay for those. Somebody paid for me so i obviously went. If i wuold have had to pay... blah, i would have taught myself how drive. I ended up doing just that in the end really.

Take the practical test where there is less traffic. At the time, I lived in West Island, and my appointment was at Longueil. Didn't want to face Henri-Bourassa.

I was lucky, I was the last guy and the SAAQ guy wanted to go home (end of his shift). He made me drive for 10 minutes and told me to return to the SAAQ.

got my licence from henri-bou a week or so ago.. it was actually rush hour so I didn't have to focus about going over the limit. The guy was cool and didn't stress me out.

I checked for car insurance and most of them won't charge you extra if you didn't take the course. They don't even ask about it..

I'm renting a car next weekend (from friday night to monday morning and it's 75$ (all inclusive except gas). When you only need it for camping trips and such it's pretty cheap!

luck!
