I think people break their word for one of 3 reasons:

1) They don't respect you. Simple as that. If they break their word, its because they don't give enuf of a shit about doing it. They're either self-centered, immature, using you, or a mix of the three.

2) The two of you are tight, so you can take minor liberties with each other cuz both you know that if things ever got fucked up, you'd back each other up til the end. And in this case, you know if they break their word, no disrespect was intended, so there is no real disrespect. If the little things are bothering you, let them know and they'll fix it.

3) There was a trade off btwn 2 of more choices, and the other party is more important to them or the promise they made to the other party is more important.

I used to do #1 a fair bit between 14-19; I look back at it, and it was immaturity more than anything else. Starting at around 20, I think I grew up. The biggest difference is that now, if I don't respect someone, or have lost respect for them, I'll never make a word with them to begin with anymore. Thus Im never in a situation to break that word. If you don't have my respect, Im never going to promise you anything, because Id rather not deal with you at all than make a promise to you. Its that simple.

The hardest is distinguishing between 1 and 3, and then deciding on what to do if it is number 3.

Perhaps you should reread this, it contradict itself because if I liked you as it stand, you wouldn't because a friend: a friend is someone that I can count on, thus will make commitments (an obviously is reciprocal).

You can have riends and not respect them a damn bit. They can be the people you go to , to have a good time, nothing serious. Just fun.
They can eb that person you can never hold a serious conversation with, someone you cant share a secret with because they will blab, someone that hurt you once in the past , your working on mending but feel you can never trust that person again.
They can also be people you just recently met, dont know all that well and still building a respect for that person. Friendships are like boyfriends/girlfriends , they can be a bitch, they can be confusing and a hell of alot of work, but the good ones are for life.
A good example is social networks like facebook that show people with over 1,000 friends. Now how many of these supposed friends are business contacts, aquaintances etc. and how many are the friends that you call, go over and hang out with, confide in, share special moments with.
But many people say these friends on there list are each and everyone of them a dear friend
Then Id like to ask those people, how many of those 1,000 people on your list would you trust your life with? A real friend you respect, you would allow them to hold your life in their hands. Thats real trst and respect.
I understand what gamos is saying. People I dont respect I never make a promise, I never give my word on anything.
Bad friendships are like the game Jenga. A few fuck ups, a little one by one can make the whole friendship foundation crash and then how can you respect them after that?
I'm feeling social butterfly mode right now..

But religious people believe their shit to be real-world facts, not just some abstract thought. They truly believe deep down that they will literaly live forever because they love jesus. That's what faith is.

I mean, I believe in the vacuum of space with all my heart yet I havent been there to experience it myself, I trust the science. Religions just stretch this to absurd extremes.

puresexmegs well for me there's level of companionship: penpal > acquaintance > good acquaintance > friend. why on earth would you even bring social network "friend" in this thread ?! even retards likely know they're no friends.
Update » DynV wrote on Mon Mar 8, 2010 @ 5:22pm
I think raisinlove is right, if they were hooked on lie detectors, I'm sure they'd pass it with flying colors ; so they're not lying, they just don't know better.

Hence why she should never speak or type seriously on any forum.

Im talking about the various people in your life, not only about friends.

Earlier in life, I used to make promises to people I didn't really hold in high esteem. I thought it made life easier. But it doesn't. Now I know better.

That still made YOU the dishonest one, BTW. It's not their fault you judged them
before they could ever prove their loyalty to you.

And it's good to see you treating people with a bit more respect now a days.
Considering these "strangers" never really did anything to deserve being lied to

let's all come down here, we are trying to have a sophisticated discussion about honesty and the nature of friendship
we should return to the question, which is "how should one live" the answer i believe is "in a civilized way"

Sometimes, sure. Other times, it was them. And often it was both of us.

Im aware of things I've done wrong. What can I say, its part of growing up. You feel bad about it, but you can't do anything about it now execpt to learn from it.

Anywyas, this thread isnt about me. Its about people and their word...my point was that people are more likely to keep their word when they have a strong amount of mutual respect for the other party.

We musn't forget that emotions distort the way we perceive others. That famous expression "blind love" is such a great example of how dishonest we came become to ourselves.

my bad, but yeah, you my meaning... people can actually convince themselves of lies when they can't or won't cope with reality, then be just as convinced when expressing it to others.

sure! people can stick their head in the sand and hide from certain realities... rather than confronting something ugly and maybe having some unpleasant encounter, they just lie to themselves or others.

some people do that all their life!
