well from what I gather, the alleged "brides" are actually local children who are just play-acting in the ceremony. the real brides are seated off camera.

The cermony was part of a mass-wedding that was organized and attended by militants. The purpose was to improve morale among the dejected locals. Supporters of rival factions came together for the occasion, to show solidarity against the occupation.

here is some Al Jazeera footage I found of the event - what they call "a rare display of Palestinian unity". Tellingly, they make no mention of any grotesque mass marriage of tiny children. Had this actually taken place, surely it would have been considered newsworthy.

and, for what it's worth, here is what one Israeli man wrote in response to the accusations:

[ israelmatzav.blogspot.com ]

at 8:47 PM, Blogger Elder of Ziyon said...

I do not believe this is correct.

First of all, last night's mass wedding was done by Islamic Jihad, not Hamas.

More importantly, the girls are not the brides. Islamic Jihad hired kindergarten children - both boys and girls - to dance and help celebrate the occasion, and these girls were part of that. The men would not hold hands with their brides.

You can try to puzzle out the autotranslation at [ 74.125.113.132 ] , but clearly the girls in that picture are dressed as brides but they are only play-acting.

Let's make sure that our accusations about these reprehensible groups are accurate before we make them, or else it can boomerang on us and make us all look bad. We know there are lots of child marriages in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states but I haven't heard about many in the Arab nations surrounding Israel, and it is unlikely that there would be a mass wedding with so many child brides or else there would be a tumult from the more liberal Arabs.

Le mariage n'est pas percu de la même manière qu'ici. Les mères vont souvent faire marier leurs filles en très bas age en espérant qu'elles aient plus de chance de survivre.

im just breaking ice here. yea that hamas/jihad/terroristwhileatit thing sound and look all wrong. i consider it could be propaganda (looks so shocking for no reason it could be some GI posting them marriage picture of a big familly like they were all pedos for sand people bashing.) thou ill still consider that 99% of the world shouldnt exist and whats -talked about- in this picture is horribly wrong and shouldnt be.

no fucking god but chaos

beside a tomohawk missile and novelty vaginas , how would you change their sick values considering they might be rooted as deep as yours against it? without commiting an immoral thing yourself ?

well I thought I already established that the article is a blatant lie.. that it IS propaganda.. yet here you are saying how sick the people in Gaza are.. weighing the moral pros and cons of a Tomahawk missile strike.

apparently the propaganda did its job.

The people are doing nothing wrong. They are impoverished oppressed people living in what is essentially an open air prison. They had a mass wedding ceremony and were given some money to help get them started with their new life. There is nothing wrong with what they did. Just because their customs are foreign to you doesn't mean they did anything immoral.

What this author is trying to do is establish a link in peoples mind - that Palestinians support pedophilia and child abuse. and unfortunately many people are so uninformed and suggestible that it is effective.

The author is smart guy too. He's written a bunch of books and won awards. It took me all of 15 minutes of digging around on the net to disprove it. He *must* have known what he was doing.

It has a really sinister purpose. It is intended to dehumanize everyday Palestinians and make their culture appear grotesque.... makes people more comfortable with the idea of them being brutalized and wiped out.

It's really no different than the disgusting anti-semitic myths that Christians spread about Jews in the Middle Ages ... claims that they poisoned wells, ate babies, etc. Once they get the masses believing that crap, it makes it easier to lead a mob into the Jewish ghetto, massacre them and seize their assets.

likewise.. the same bullshit after 9/11, when Tony Blair's wife was suddenly a champion of womens rights. She claimed she wanted to free Afghan women from the burqua.

please. They could care less about womens' rights. They just want people to get it in their head: Afghan culture = evil.

I should make it clear that I in no way support Hamas or Islamic Jihad. but that has nothing to do with the fact that there are a lot of perfectly decent everyday people who are suffering terribly in the occupied territories. It's a fucked up apartheid-like situation, which has the tacit approval of the US government.

and you say you wanna hit those people with missile strikes?? riiiight.

anyway I'm done with this...

Hte marriage of underage girls to much older man in radical muslim part of the world is not as widespread and as common as some people would like us to believe. That's a fact. We only hear about the worst cases on [ yahoo.com ]

It sure is deplorable when those situations occurs. But please, marriage of women of lets say, 16yrs old and under to a 40yrs old granpa is taboo the world over, duh. And it is weird, creepy and all.

... i have to say, for a minute there, i also believed the "story" posted by o.p. as well, despite the fact that i know better from having done my own research into the muslim religion.

i dont presume to be any kind of reference, but from what i understand, a significant part of islam involves a code of conduct that would never permit such acts as where suggested.
