Seriously though, the reason no one knows the stories from back in the day is cuz theres almost no one left from back in the day that still raves. These days, the normal turnover from the time a new raver enters to the time they leave is 6 months. If you can make it to 3 years, ur probably one of the older people in the scene. The average age of the scene is probably 22-24, with the distribution skewed towards the 16-21 crowd. If you know stories from 98...that means you've been in the scene atleast 10 years. Even if you were 18 when you started raving, that makes you 28... i dunno any ravers that old. Theres very few of them around...
I'm feeling a message in a bottl right now..

I think Moby still raves

I remember seeing him at Metropolis back in 93 with Orbital and Aphex Twin, sick sick show & I remember giving Luke some change on the way out,

He was more into the squeegee/junkie scene back then, so as the good PLUR raver I was, I figured I'd spare a brother a dime ;)

Hey man, I needed the flyers to get my fix. I was shooting into my neck at that point.

If you want to know I'm 31, and yes, I've seen all that.
I'm feeling mighty frisky right now..

I'll take a moment to speak for myself and my crew in that when we threw parties in Montreal between 99 and 04, we never sold illicit substances nor did we borrow cash from criminals to fund our events, which isn't to say that we weren't approached on it...

I've seen the dark side and the underside of club/rave land in Montreal, but I made the CHOICE not be part of it. It never affected me personally and our crew did our business above level, we let the bottom feeders conduct their business without our aid. We promoted positivity and succeeded with hard work, tons of effort and love for the scene and the culture. I'm pretty sure that other crews functioned on a similar level which is to say that we weren't unique in our intentions or success.

Montreal had some amazing people create and promote some amazing events over the years, but it is the age old way that it is far easier to remember the bad stuff than the good. I remember the good because I never cared about the bad...

Ufot-positive to the grave thanks to the rave!
I'm feeling broken in the heart right now..

so true hahahahahaha

That flyers with aphex twin on it on trey's profile piss me off. Aphex twin at a rave. FUCK.

And yeah, the ak-47 storys and whatnot sound made-up. I mean, i'v witnessed people running from shootouts downtown a couple years ago, i had my dick sucked in a dirty bathroom, i fell down some stairs at a squat rave while on so much ketamine i couldnt even recognise my friends, i saw 13 yrs old girls straight out of a suburbian catholic high school dance litteraly half naked. People leave in an ambulance after a drug binge of some sort. Heard about and saw the pictures of some DJ playing balls naked. A friend dancing 100% naked at a loft party one morning. I'v witness some sketchy weirdass latin promotoers robing people's coats and shit. I once kicked the ass of a shemale at the exit of a sketchy bar that was hosting a metal/hard rock night.

But an ak-47, nop. I want one tough.

And on top of that, it seems like the owner of this websites eats his own cum and dont use toilet paper ( sorry Noah, i had too hihihih :) )
I'm feeling at peace right now..

That's true everywhere. There were tons of solid crews that never delved into darkness and persevered while the sketchiness dissipated, so to speak. I mean it was always there but I feel like everything is a hell of a lot safer these days, at least on the level of the vibe. Around 2004 there were a ton of excellent free party crews, with a couple of total idiots here and there, like this dude who lit himself on fire when refilling a generator that was still running. I'm personally really glad that parties, or at least festivals, started taking on a more responsible approach since the sketchiness at the turn of the millenium.

you can rave all your life as long as you don't abuse
i started to go at raves in 1993,started djing in(raves)1994
love it more than ever, get asked to play more than ever
the only problem is people think spending money on drugs is
more important than paying dj's!

That's why some dj's sell-out !!!money talks
I'm feeling "o" reginal retar right now..

or beer.

ark i hate that (a little of money would do some good after all we spend so much on 12", cd and the equipment $$$$)

it is good to be generous but the djs are not slave.

burn some CDs with 320kps mp3s you get on torrentech or something for free and use somebody elses cdjs, cheap pay, cheap play. Another way to see this is that you can have free drugs for little efforts. I'm thinking about becoming a DJ myself. I'll play happy hardcore. Picture this, i DJ some crap for an hour, no 14yrs old in the attending will notice how bad i am, then i'll have free drugs for the night and on top of that, the 14yrs old fall into my arms, on the beat.

Na seriously, my point is that rave partys to me are mostly some kind of DIY events where everybody works together just for the fun of throwing a party and where a minimal fee is asked at door to pay for the venue.

There is zero money to make with our little weekend partys.
If you aim at becoming a professional DJ, dont mix at raves, you hang with the wrong crowd.
I'm feeling at peace right now..

lol. well maybe some "DJ" playing a bunch of mp3s they downloaded for free, who doesn't own their own gear would jump at that offer... but nobody serious.

I highly doubt somebody who has actually invested thousands of dollars on records and gear and has spent years mixing them would play for a bump of K.

(well I hope not anyway lol)

I see your point though - it's cool to throw free jams and there will always be new people eager to mess around in front of their friends for free.. shit some people would even pay to play, I bet

some wanker at a club in Toronto offered my friend 50 bucks to let him get on the mic and MC during his jungle set. knowing first-hand how fucking horrible some of these so-called 'MCs' really are, my friend wisely declined. you put a mic in their hand and they don't shut up for the rest of the set.

ya man. like I said, I like free parties. if nobody is making money, then playing for free or cab fare is fine. though they should make damn sure you have beers =)

the problem is some people are slave drivers. they spend so much money on their cocaine, ketamine, MDMA, alcohol, weed and cigarettes, and then don't even budget to take care of their DJs.. try and do every thing on the cheap. that says a lot about what kind of people they are

thing is though, nobody is putting a gun up to DJs' heads, making them take gigs. if I don't like the way people are running their business, I don't play for em, or have anything to do with them. period. ..I got enough cash - the gigs should always be fun. as soon as it stops being fun, I'm out

If you have good connects you can get interesting gigs outside of "the scene". back in Toronto I would get gigs doing art shows, which were well-paid and really fun.

at one Video screening events at the Art Gallery of Ontario I got paid 250 bucks - plus free drinks all night - to play a 2 hour set of old atmospheric and dark jungle. most of the people there were older wealthy art patrons, but they love hearing strange underground music.

it was a lot of fun playing for a completely different older crowd in a giant art gallery. very civilized.
