yea you can say that lol...

and i agree with most posts above. i had a 10 year old cat, and a 1 year old came into the picture...
the new male, terrorized the old female constantly, and she was very grumpy, and hid away a lot to be in peace...
the young one died, and the old lady came back out n about more often...

my mom more recently got a female cat, then a year later, got a male siamese, and they got along really well almost from the get go... (altho they were both young)

one more example would be my little guy now, got him as a kitten, and then ended up moving in with the person who i got him from, so he was reunited with his mother. he ended up chasing her all the time, and not letting her go in the litter etc...

so you never really know whats gonna happen, they will either eventually get used to each other, or one will dominate the other till the end of time...
I'm feeling like ezbake right now..

depends as recoil said.

ya good point Craig. the way a dominant cat will share it's turf with a dog VS a kitten are two differnt things. apples and oranges.

except for ones bred for hunting small animals (eg - terriers - which instinctively attack and break the neck) most dogs - even big ones - steer clear of cats. once they get a taste of those claws across their nose they learn pretty quick that cats should be avoided. one time a big Rottweiler ventured onto our property from a couple doors down, and my cat literally chased him like crazy down the street. - he was pretty dominant though - he was a 20 pound tabby.

but ya dogs generally avoid conflict if they are living with a cat, and the cat knows this. kittens on the other hand are gonna give it a much harder time, cuz it's just part of their nature to contstantly test the rival cat for weakness. and some cats will be really aggressive if they sense weakness - start swatting it when it tries to eat at the food bowl etc.

just thought I'd add that - Craig is right. the fact that it stood up to the Rottweiller doesn't mean it can handle a little kitten.

good luck Lynn and lemme know if you have any more questions - I've had cats all my life so I've seen all this happen firsthand a lot.

one last piece of advice though. if the new cat is not being nice to the old cat... and you'll know cuz the old one will try and hide from it and go on the defensive - find a new home for the kitten ASAP. (if that is the case- dont send it to a shelter. i can help you find a good home for it) I've seen that happen plenty of times, where people who don't understand cats just sit back and let the weaker one get constantly picked on.

as I said - they think the cats are playing, when really it is the more dominant cat tormenting the timid one. a lot of the bullying will be subtle too - cuz cats mostly use body language to communicate. the reason they are so vocal with humans is cuz we cant understand their signals. so sometimes all the cat has to do is sit near the timid one and stare at it. seems like nothing to us but to the cat it is very threatening.

cats can be a lot crueler than dogs like that, because they aren't pack animals, and in the wild would never be forced to share such close quarters. and just like a person, the poor thing is gonna be a nervous wreck, and it will take a major toll on it's health. so the old cat is the one who should have priority

hope that helps ( and sorry for the TLDR post.. hehe )

Bah. "Fixed" is a pretty common expression for cat sterilization. Does sound like a misnomer, though, I agree :)

to mix cat , you need a cage and patience.

you keep the new cat in the cage till the old cat " ask " him out.

you'll know , no shit. its the only way that works , if you dont want your alpha cat to bully behind your back and having you clueless about it. ( the cat wants to know and wants respect)

thou i dont expect everybody on this site to be intelligent enought to understand that concept .
Update » cutterhead wrote on Thu Jul 23, 2009 @ 5:44pm
same way with bunnies etc.. that youd want to mix with the cat. this way the cat realise its an other living thing, will calim pity from it instead of jalousy. and all the psychics around it.
I'm feeling tarfu right now..

cutter, I Iike you guy and you got lots of knowledge and shit, and I respec that.
It's comments like this that make it laborious to converse with you, and most likely the reason people just end up writing you off as an arrogant twat and a tosser.

Good suggestion nonetheless.

if you analyse the sentence structure :

thou i dont expect everybody on this site to be intelligent enought to understand that concept .

are you that much emotionally shaken you took this personnaly too like masa ? it says i dont expect everybody to understand the concept. no fucking arrogance there.

thou i fing yours has a taste of , till it get to the real matter where its about the suggestion itself.

now before someone here adds more phlegm read the pm masa sent me out of the blue in order to KEEP THE FLAMES OUT OF THE THREADS . i see you guys are helping A LOT. all of you shouldnt take me fo an idiot , yall be making idiots of yourself.

complete snip of his e-diarhea he sent.

Jul 23 2009 @ 8:25pm
Don't remember anyone asking me to PM you.

But heh, can't spell it out more clearly than I already did. I'M ON YOUR FUCKING CASE 'CUZ YOU'RE BEING AN ASS TO FRIENDS OF MINE. AND YOURS, APPARENTLY.

We both want it our way, kiddo. That's why it's a flame war.

And yeah, some of my (or our) friends have money, some don't. That's why I even loan 'em some when they're in need.

But tons of 'em make events. And they act professional too, they don't go around insulting their very clientèle for no reason.

I'd tell you to suck on my dick, but there's a girl coming over, I'm sure she'll do just that. And then some.

Later, kiddo.

lynzyn , the cage way i stated , i tryed it more than 3 times and had ppl doing the same around me. i had two unnutered males and 3 female cats.

when i introduced the first two i had a lot of retissance from the little fem. and after going against my will and keeping the kitten in the cage ingnoring him , at first my fem cat liked the power trip, but then a day or two after she developped foreing compassion (take a clue masa) and i opened the cage after 4 days and almost got into a fight in 2ms , but then they got cuddley and was oky after.

other time to take into consideration , if you kity is having babies , the male can be aware , dont toss him out of the room or prevent him acesss he will end up terrorised , unsecure (other kity's kitten not his) , so letting him in during the whole delivery is okay depending on you overwatch capability .

most of the time kitys eat their young cause they dont realise its a living kitty , take plastic gloves , and slowly introduce the kitten once its out , she might try to bit it , but if you take a second explaining to the cat its hers , ill all be ok
I'm feeling tarfu right now..

Well yes, I did want to keep the flames out of thread.

Craig's being very diplomat with you, but he's making the same point as I. You're assuming most people on here are stupid, and I'M the one lacking compassion?

I might be seeing friends in Repentigny on Saturday. I'll repeat an invite I made a few months ago. I'll meet you up for coffee or something. Most times, these internet personas disappear when face-to-face, and we might end up seeing we're not such bad guys in real life.

There. T'sall public now. Your call. But keep insulting people for no reason and I'll KEEP TELLING YOU OFF.

Sorry about turning this thread into a flame war, Lynzin. I guess the whole point is, it all depends on the demeanor of the cats involved. cutter's suggestion is very apt, as are the other ones mentioned.

G'luck :)

And Masa, caaamaaan. You know inviting someone to converse face-to-face for arguments is a fascist and nazist way of dealing with a divergence of opinion, right ?
