What was that all about then? Sounds like a civil war to me

alright Mr Bliss. waiting for a friend from Ottawa, so I took the time to shed some light on this. you'd better read it! =)

it is a lot of writing, with some youtube docs posted after.unfortunately there are no short answers for the questions you asked.

I actually really enjoy writing - especially about history and world issues, so it's all fun and games to me. I used to make good cash writing slacker students' essays for them in high school and university. It is a good exercise to keep the mind sharp.

so...

may I just say - when you write "bombs going off all over Ireland.." - This was not the case. Except for 2 major incidents in the Irish Republic in 1974, almost all the terrorism took place in Northern Ireland and England.

even though you might find all this preamble boring, it is pointless to talk about the recent terrorism without understanding how things got that way...

the modern IRA as we have come to know it did not just appear overnight...

---

the Scottish were subjugated by the English

they were then brought over as soldiers in the English Army to subjugate the Irish. As a reward, they were given the land of the Irish natives.

Protestant = Anglo/Scots, Catholic = native Irish

classic imperial strategy of 'divide and conquer'

this was the the start of a very terrible time for the Irish.. literally millions were slaughtered or forced into slavery in the Caribbean, never to return.

soooo... flash forward to the 20th century

during World War I, England was busy fighting the Axis, and Irish nationalists saw an opportunity to overthrow their English rulers

so these freedom fighters - the Irish Republican Army, or I.R.A. - fought and won a guerrilla war against the English in Ireland, as I mentioned before.

so they came up with a treaty agreement. the English would grant independence to the Irish Free State, providing they keep the 6 northern counties where their pro-English Protestants were in the majority

many IRA fighters were opposed to this. they wanted all Ireland to be for the Irish, and saw any concession to the English as unacceptable.

so their leader Michael Collins, thinking it was a realistic proposal, agreed to this treaty. The island was partitioned into the Irish Free State, and those 6 northern counties became Northern Ireland, or Ulster.

the border was very deliberately drawn around Catholic Nationalist strongholds - like my dad's hometown, Monaghan - to ensure they could not be part of the democratic process in this new state. This state would remain a holding of Britain.

This is called "gerrymandering" and was first coined in northern ireland. Israel is also quite notorious for this practice. It creates an illusion of adhering to democratic principles when in truth it is doing anything but.

So now there was this new border and people had to flee from both sides for their lives. A lot of ethnic cleansing went on on both sides.

so the IRA now split - the pro-treaty IRA men became the official army of the new Free State, whereas the anti-treaty IRA felt that the pro-treaty forces had betrayed their cause, and thus must be treated as the enemy

so, they had a nasty civil war - Irish Catholics VS Irish Catholics

the Free State won, and the defeated anti-treaty IRA became an outlawed organization and went underground. Aside from a few low-key campaigns along the border and in Liverpool, they were now widely considered to be a spent force.

so now you have Northern Ireland. There was still a Catholic minority living in this Northern Irish state, but even moreso than before, they were marginalized to a second-class downtrodden existence.
they had little access to decent housing or jobs and were subject to all kinds of abuse at the hands of the Protestant police force, who despised them.

it was very similar, once again, to the life of a black person in the deep south in the 40s or 50s.

these Protestant Orange Order men are the same Anglo-Scots who ran big business in Quebec in the 20th century. These were very bigoted people, so as a poor Catholic, your chances of upward mobility would be very limited. In northern Ireland, however, it was much more severe.

so, inspired by Martin Luther King's civil rights marches, Catholics took to the streets and had peaceful marches demanding their hardships be addressed. The reaction from the establishment and from Protestant mobs was brutal.

Catholics were attacked, murdered, and their neighbourhoods destroyed by firebombs, while Northern Irish police did nothing, and often helped the mobs. The Irish Catholics in Northern Ireland were in very dire straits

the British army was called in to protect them. However, once there, they did much to antagonize the Catholics as they hunted for IRA gunmen in their communities

Innocent Catholics found their doors kicked in, and were beaten, rounded up, and jailed without charge - this was called Internment.

in 1972, a Catholic peace march was held in the city of Derry, Northern Ireland, to protest internment. British paratroopers attacked the marchers, and opened fire with high calibre rifles. 13 unarmed civilians were shot dead on on the spot, with one more dying later. This became known as Bloody Sunday.

after this day, the IRA came back with a vengeance, and Irish Catholic kids were lining up to join the fight againt the British army.

Thus began some really vicious inner city warfare.

so now onto what you were asking about - all the IRA terrorism, etc etc. *really* interesting stuff

the IRA became very good at what it did, and was regarded by other rebel movements and Army intelligence as the best guerrilla army in the world.

Some of their operations are pretty spectacular, some of them are just savage and pointlessly cruel. but the entire situation was brutal on all sides.

rather than writing any more, I highly recommend these documentaries. the Behind the Mask was on PBS back in 1997 and while it is quite long, it is really really good. The other one is good but is obviously biased towards the IRA - but has a lot of great footage. These will do a much better job at explaining what happened in Northern Ireland and why.

oh I don't care. somebody might. I do it more for my own interest, and if one person reads it - cool!

I actually think it's a shame people have no stamina for reading. I used to devour books when i was a kid. Back in the day that was the only way you could research something.

reading serious fiction and non-fiction makes your mind very strong, especially if you get started at a very young age.

If you replace books with TV and internet, kids grow up having the attention span and intellect of a Jack Russell Terrier.
