That would be like calling someone in the Gaza strip 'Israeli'. Great Britain is a political entity. [ en.wikipedia.org ] Scotland and Wales long ago gave in to English military aggression and surrendered their sovereignty. While still fiercely proud of their cultures, they remain a part of that political union. Ireland is no longer part of Great Britain. From 1919-1921, it fought and won a nasty guerrilla war against the English forces in Ireland. This was followed by an equally vicious Irish civil war.. both of which my grandfather fought in. So, in 1922 it won its independence from Great Britain. That's why my passport says "Eire" on it instead of United Kingdom At this point the country was partitioned, and the 6 counties with a Protestant majority became Northern Ireland - or Ulster. These 6 counties are the only part of the island that are still part of Great Britain. to many Irish people in the Irish borderlands and Northern Ireland, "British" is the name of their hated enemy, to this day. The Irish have been violently resisting English rule on the island since 1171 AD, so we are most definitely not British. Never have been, never will be. |

What use is speaking Vietnamese in Canada? Update » Blisss wrote on Thu Feb 5, 2009 @ 3:13pm Ireland is still part of Great Britain
Most of the Irish war is a civil war between the Irish. Irish killing Irish. The English are just backing one side over the other. Religion also plays a major role in the divisions in the Irish society. Update » Blisss wrote on Thu Feb 5, 2009 @ 3:15pm Ok so maybe its not still a part of Great Britain, missed that part ;) | |
