Bell is bad cuz their restricting bit-torrent, file-sharing, and other high-bandwidth activities during office hours (9am-5pm). Essentially their giving people the shaft in favor of corporations.

The only reason their doing it is because they dont want to spend the money upgrading the network for next-generation business needs like video-conferencing. So they figure they can still make the money from offering the service by simply restricting people's ability to download during the day.

The idea behind it is that most people wont care cuz theyre not at home during those hours anyways...and they can always just run their bit-torrents during the night whilst they sleep. And the people who do care are students, children and other low revenue customers...so bell can effectively marginalize them without seeing it hit their bottom line revenue.

The real problem is the lack of comepetition in our telecom industry. In the US, Verizon has already begun to lay fiber right to people's homes. Yes, right into their home. And its not even expensive.

So while the companys in the states are making investments to meet future demand of bandwidth (file-sharing, gaming, TV thru the net, interactive TV, Blue-Ray downloads on demand, etc), in Canada theyre trying to force people to regress back to the past.

the problem is we don't even know if bell has a bandwidth problem...

Private corporations have shareholders who expect more and more profit every year, at a certain point they reach a plateau of profitability and have to cut back service to increase profit to keep shareholders happy. Bell wanting a bigger profit margin = us getting the shaft. Also it has the side-effect of eliminating a lot of the benefits that the other dsl providers had over bell's own service.

Every telecom company in the world is facing a bandwidth problem based on future forecasts of badwidth usage. The difference is that in some countries theyre building more bandwidth, while in others theyre trying to get more out of existing badwidth

gamos, its so untrue that cdl is more stable than the cable.

dsl is : you have your won line up to bell's server in your area. but bells server usually sucks ass and slows and fucks when alot of people are using thier lines.

while videotron has a 'shared network' but has 100 times better and bigger servers to which you are connected.

the speed "may" vary more with videotron, even if bell "says" they have no slow downs, its completely false and its false representation. because at the end of the line, both bell and videotron have the same variations in speed and stability, its just the network that is wired differently

in other words, with bell you will have problems most often due to thier shitty central that cant provide good services for all the users in your area, and videotron it will be because there is too much information in your area that is being transfered trough the cable. BUT the cable isnt used at all its capacity, while bell's dsl IS used at 100% ( i worked at videotrons for 1 and 1/2 year and i never refused a client telling them "then server in your area is full" while right now i work at distributel (dsl -> bell)
and i often find full servers.)

do you believe bell's add telling that there is no slow down, is that why you say dsl is better?

caus i cant see the reason,
WAY less capacity.
less developability (if that word exist)
cost more to use/repair the network for the isp
need to have shit more servers comparing to videotron (approx 1 for videotron to 7 to 10 for bell in the same coverage area)
I'm feeling hardcore right now..

DSL is more stable in the sense that it varies with
1) total usuage on the network (variable)
2) Distance from CO (fixed)

Cable on the other hand varies with
1) Usage in neighborhood (variable)
2) Usage on network (variable)

So yes. Its true that both Cable and DSL will be slower at peak hours. But with Cable, the speed could decrease further dependant on the usage in the neighborhood. And since the lines to the neighborhood are of smaller capacity, either could be a binding constraint ofr cable. DSL only has one binding constraint by comparison.

But yes, if you lived in a neighborhood with a good line, or realitvely few users, and if Bell's network happens to be clogged and Videotrons has excess capacity, then yes, Cable would be more consistant and faster. I woudlnt know. I dont live in montreal. Also, if you live far from Bells C/O your gonna have a crappy DSL experience

However, usually, especially in high density areas, your better off with DSL. Either way it wont matter in 5 years. With FTTP coming on strong thanks to the advances made by corning, the method of last mile transmission (copper vs cable) wont matter anymore.

yep, but bell's CO are shit, so even if people in your neighbour doesnt affect your line directly, it affects the CO.

so its the same shit, instead of blocking in the tube, its blocking at the end, its still blocked in any cases.

It's like that in most of the world, except for north america.. Same with internet over cell phones; I know in the UK, unlimited high-speed internet is next to nothing on cellphones, and unlimited+uncapped DSL or cable is the equivalent to 25$/month..

Yeah well most of these countries have next to no land lines, so impressive cellphone networks were installed to compensate. Same with China...

No worries, we'll pick up the pace and now we'll have people complaining about cellphone towers in their backyard and the negative effects thereof.

Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Ok, I just read/found out something that gave me an idea, and I did a little reading up...

Comcast, the ISP, is throttling bit torrent/P2P trafic. The FCC is suing them, because this practice is illegal.

[ svextra.com ]

So with a little digging, I couldn't find a single mention of Bell/Sympatico being investigated for the same practices that Comcast are doing.

Want your "high-speed" internet back? Let's let the FCC know about Bell throttling their own trafic, as well as all the trafic of their re-sellers!

Here's where the form is: [ www.fcc.gov ]

Damn, I could have sworn the FCC covered everything that involved communications in north america, but yeah, I'm not seeing an option for canada in the menu.

Fuck.

I'm gonna pick a state at random and send it to them, in hopes that they contact the canadian equivalent to the FCC, 'cause I'm finding jack shit with google.

wait, never mind. CRTC. Duhhh, wow that was a hell of a brain fart.
