If everyone lived at walking distance from there work, there would be a lot less cars in circulation, almost no trafik, a lot less polution. Of course its impossible. North America was thaught out and built so that you would need a car to do just about everything (thats the idea behind subburbs neway). lets not forget that america is all about cars and petrol. I'm guessing you have a realy good reason to live on the plateau like, you want to be close to your favorite icecream parlour or something like that, but it would probably be a lot cheaper to live in Laval, you would probably have a larger place, save 104$ a monthe and save 2hrs a day in commuting... but it is realy cool to live on the plateau, second coolest place in north America, some say.
If the metro workers took a 10% pay cut, they would probably make the same amount after taxes, but the gouverment would make less money in taxes, so basicly, you would be taking from one pocket and putting it in the other.
To all of you students who have had nothing but summer and Mcjobs, 50000 a year is not a lot of money. And if your salary doesnt increase with the inflation rate, you are actualy taking a pay cut every year.

Fishead, i'm guessing you dont work for the government, cus if you did, you would maybe know that as a employer, they are the biggest ballbusters of them all. Its not the 70's anymore, the time when your parents got to milk society for all it was worth is over.
Maybe one day some of you might make 50k a year, most of you probably wont, but its not because of the unions, its not cus you arnt educated or talented, its cus we are witnessing the dissaperance of the middle class, replaced buy a small managing class (making huge amounts of $$) and an army of expendable low wadge jobs selling shoes and crappy food. Its happening in the U.S. and if we keep it up, It will happen to us.
Keep on bashing the middle class, it will happen that much quicker.

Peoples almost always chose the place they live for the most superfitial and bogus reasons, but you are right it is impossible cus most peoples are superfitial and bogus. But living close to your work makes perfect sense if you live and work on the island. Unless you work in a industrial sector. Or you have a crappy mcjob that changes every 2 months.

Schools and hospitals are totaly different budjet, totaly different gouvernments and have nothing to do with public transit.

For our parents generation, 50k a year is average, middle class.
Greed is when a company thats making a profit moves to mexico or India or some other slavery frendly country, to make more money.

I guess it does feel good to vent your frustrations once in a while
But i'll bet most of you dont care how much money the stm workers make, as long as the bus shows up in time.

Actually, I do walk to work... and haven't really used the metro at all in the last couple of months - aside from taking it to the airport a few weeks back. It's irrelevant to any debate about the strike, though. I used to work in St. Lambert and about 5% of my yearly salary went towards the cost of commuting out there... now I work closer to home.

I still don't think that a strike is a sensible solution to a debate over money. If metro workers were being subjected to hazardous working conditions, or being forced to work unsafe amounts of overtime or sexual harrassment or something that was infringing upon their human rights... but seriously - they're not getting a cost of living increase this year - but the contract offers them 2% increases over the next five?

Boo-cunting-hoo...

As I said - sent it to arbitration for an impartial judgement of the situation.

if we might make that sort of money one day - why the fuck should we feel huge amounts of sympathy for people who are fortunate enough to be getting that now and whining that it's not enough. Seriously... I don't want to hear complaints about how it's difficult to raise a family or afford a car or buy a house... Things are always going to be difficult. I know a lot of people who are dependent on the metro to get to a job that barely pays their rent. Explain the fucking logic of a bunch of middle class suckoffs going on strike once every three years to a single parent working as a waiter or waitress who is getting fucked over because of a strike...

Did you ever stop to think that escalating salaries might play some role in what drives inflation?

Wait I should move closer to downtown Montreal so I can walk to work? I like living in Verdun it's quiet near the water not too expensive and close to everything. Why should I live downtown just in case some overpaid workers want to go on strike.

Also when you increase wages accross the board it does drive inflation, making more money doesn't mean you always end up with more money in the end.

Apprently the government is stepping in to stop the Unions from holding the city hostage, about fucking time.

Yeah they have until Friday to agree on something.

From the facebook group:
Contre la grève à la STM / Against the strike
[ www.facebook.com ]
:

How much salary time is wasted on this board, i wounder?

Instead of fighting peoples with better wages and conditions, why dont you all fight to obtain better wages and conditions for yourselfs?
Then maybe you wont be so dependant on the public transit system.

"And if the STM workers don't get what they want I highly doubt that all these middle class workers listed above will disappear."

They wont dissapear, they will just make less and less money each year, if there salary does not follow the inflation rate.

And if they have it so good, why dont you all go and learn how to fix busses and metros. When all these babyboomer that do the job right now take there retirement, they will need massive amounts of workers. (most of the peoples that are in place have been there since the 80's and will be retiring in the next few years.) Since the public transit is a sector that is in expantion, chances are you will have work for the rest of your life.
Does the world nead an other web or game designer, realy?

databoy, living next to your job is, first, completely ridicoulus, second, impossible

where do you work?

near my work ther are NO places to live except half million $ condos, with suck, i wont pay 500 000 to live in a place where you have someone over your head knocking you because you make noise

and lets say, you work in an industry, wich pollutes extremely, you would live near that?

as you say, i can see, you are not touched at all by any of this, because you are giving opignions that are unrealistic and/or completely stupid in the time/position that everyone here is in...

Some do it by choice, you know. Cars pollute. You don't need a car if you live in Montreal, unless you're working deliveries or live at one extremity and work at the other (and even then, thank the crawling chaos for subways and buses).

Exactly I chose to not buy a car, its a headache I much prefer to take the metro or bus into work and just read or something on the way. Parking downtown is a nightmare and a waste when I can just take a metro for 20 minutes.

I believe databoy mops the metro. ;)

And i say again, 50000 for an ez job they dont even do well (even when they work the metro is dirty) is way to much. And no we cant afford to raise the salary of everyone else to fix things.

I work at cbc, i chose to live close to my work, even if it means living in a small appartment, in a quite poluted and shady part of town. But in the 8 years that i have been living there, the neibourhood has changed quite a bit for the better. And since i'm not dependant on public transit to get around, It doesnt affect me all that much, no.
Spending a hour a day in public transit or in trafik is the last thing i want to do.
I didnt say it was practical or even possible for every one to live close to there job, but it would make perfect sence for A LOT of peoples to chose where they live accordig to where they work, and not accordig to the trendyness/beautyfullness or the neibourhood.

Bottom line here, peoples dont care how much the buss driver earn as long ass the buss get there on time. Proof is, ass soon as they get back to work, weather they obtain what they want or not, this thread will die.
No one likes to have there routine fucked with. It can be quite frustrating.

its true, i dont care how much they earn, as long as there are services, but now, there is NO services, and they ask for more, wich this more is allready, like, 2 times what a normal canadian earns, so its damn illogical that they ask for more when they allready have more, if theywere paied 7$ an hour, id agree with them, but they earn between 20 to 30$ an hour and have all the benefits that we dont have, and sorry to say that, but repair/maintenance services COMPLETELY SUCKS...
