try copying a folder with the same name into a place with a folder with the same name... eg.. copy a folder to your desktop called "blah" when you already have a folder called "blah".. In windows, it asks you if you want to overwrite the files and copies only the new files and the ones you allow it to overwrite, on a mac, it replaces the whole folder with the new version, erasing all the old files (and it doesn't even put them into the trash).
But the OS is still solid overall.

99% of mac users don't use the command line, most don't even know it exists.
Every time I am fixing a Mac and the owner sees me bust the terminal out, they ussually look like they are going to cry.

Me and you don't hang out at the same developer conferences dominated by macs, I guess.
But, if that's the game, then %99 of mac users won't need to merge folders. They'll just do the more simple file copy.

Don't get upset that I am exposing OS X's one major glaring UI fault.
People merge folders all the time. Anyone who has more than one computer or backs up folders might have to merge. 1) You backup blah to an external drive 2) you save some data in blah that isn't backed up 3) you restore the backed up blah folder for whatever reason (Maybe it contained images and you fucked a bunch of them up in photoshop and overwrote them, and want to restore the originals) 4) You copy the folder off your external drive and the new files you made go bye-bye. Don't tell me only pros have to merge folders. I know plenty of people who use Macs for video-editing, sound, and desktop publishing and don't know anything about the terminal and yet have to do things like merge folders all the time... They don't hang out at mac developer conferences either, they just use the computers to get work done.

Dude, like I said, things change. If this is really needed it will make it into the next version. Until then, there i've listed 3 ways to do it. One of them has a GUI. I'm no OS X fanboi and I'm not apologizing for it's faults. I'm the first to say the thing wasn't even usable until at least 3 years after it's release. But, your scenario is wrong. The OS will give the user a warning -> [ www.nullwhore.com ] asking if they want to REPLACE the files before doing so. You can always say NO.
For the record, The conference where I saw a shitload of macs was a Perl dev conference in Chicago, all Unix pros. I was probably the weakest link there. You greatly underestimate the user-base of macs.

A dialog pops up and asks me what to do. "An older item named "blah" already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the newer one you are moving?"

personally i love the imac...
its sexy as hell and fast enough for graphic design... i'd much rather complain about adobe's cs2 ass code and instabily than anything about my imac... whats up with illustrator anyway? such a piece of shit!!! freehand mx opperates like100x faster and is just a way better program in general and they tried to eliminate it. not to mention its way more compatible for flash and dream weaver... adobe are fuckin' idiots!!!

Shit, I do that sort of function 400 times a day, there's no possible way ANYONE could find ANY use in such a bug ridden OS eh? I mean, it's SO common to be *merging* two folders that are so massive you couldn't possibly take the 4 files within and move them manually eh? Fucking complaints, it's insane. There's like 50 different Finder replacements, [ www.cocoatech.com ] will easily do what you want.

i started with pc's, im still using pc's, I like pc's, i do everything i want to get done with pc's and they've hardly ever let me down, not to mention the awesome times i've had gaming with them both in the past and present... but ever since I was a kid, I've always had trouble with mac people, either shooting me down for using pc's or making snob comments about how kool or great their macs are... as far as im concerned, i'd rather stay pc and get more bang for my buck then get a mac, who cares if the Os is crap, if it is, then replace with one that works better; If your not computer inclined or want the least amount of headaches, then save up and buy a mac...
on a personal note, the mac-atude i've felt over the years from mac users is one of the reasons i will never buy anything mac, i feel similar about BMW's... they are superb cars, but anyone i've ever met who drives one is a complete fuckin douche, so even if i ever get enough money to buy one, i wont, ever... UFot-getting stuff done, any kind puter, any kinda time...

Mac users act the way they do because they constantly get marginalized by non mac users. people who shit on them just because they don't user windows. it causes them to congregate and gang up on those who don't use macs. it's always been like that.

Besides, you can't complain about the price of a companies' products... they charge what they deem it to be worth selling, don't like it, don't buy it. That's why i don't buy PC's even though they are cheaper. Just don't like Windows.

I have burnt a ton of dvds. Try backing up gigs of music recordings on to cds.
The fact about the price is that apple cripples their lower end models to force people to pay more to get a basic feature (like burning dvds). Try finding a PC desktop or even laptop that is sold without a DvD burner.. The only ones I have seen are the ones that cost less than 500. OS X is a good operating system but it's kind of pathetic that you have to use third party software to merge folders properly or to maximize a window to fill the whole screen (without doing it manually). Apple also doesn't recognize the fact that some of us don't care about sexy systems, we want something cheap and expandible, but are interested in their generally solid OS and some of their software. Why do I have to buy a "super sexy" computer if I want to use final cut or logic. I use a computer to get work done, not masturbate over how shiny the case is.

I back up to another hard drive as well, but every so often I burn important stuff on to DVDs to keep off site.
If there's a fire a backup hard drive isn't going to help too much.
