Agreed. Reverse psychology is sometimes the best alternative form of help. By making the troubled individual think you don't care about, or have given up on them completely they might proactively begin to make positive change to impress the doubter and disprove the apparent lack of confidence in their (the troubled individual's) ability to recover.

That sucks Lindsay... I'd hate to get harrassed right outside my doorstep but I guess thats something you have to be prepared for living downtown in an imperfect society where vagrancy usually migrates to. If I lived downtown and had to deal with that situation I'd do whatever I could to help, periodically giving the vagrant bananas, potatoes & classified sections of newspapers to try encouraging them. If I saw that they took the food for granted I'd find out if they had any success with the classified section and so long as they could prove to me that they were actively looking for employment I'd continue giving them food for the effort. Alternatively, If they were rude and unappreciative I'd have to give at least 2 or 3 warnings threatening to call the cops before actually doing so cause seeing as how there's not much the cops can (or rather would) do, I'd feel as though I was wasting valuable resources which could be better allocated elsewhere.

despite the fact that jesse jackson is a hypocritical priest advancing his own personal agenda with a chip on his shoulder, i think a better quote from him to use here would be

"Today's students can put dope in their veins or hope in their brains. If they can conceive it and believe it, they can achieve it. They must know it is not their aptitude but their attitude that will determine their altitude."

in other words, if youre so hungry; if you want money, GET A JOB.

in the street i only give my money to handicap people or old ladies.

for people who need ressources or help: don't wait till it's go really wrong in your life. go reach help, there's alot of organismes out there. and majority of them wouldn't make a distinction as if you'r a total homeless, a student in difficulty or monoparental parents... go to your area clsc too!

personaly i never got into big money problems but when i was working years ago for a renovation compagnie in the centre-sud i always followed my co-workers during lunch time.. they were going at this community center...i don't remember the name of the place but it's the place where the party "kemal" was held... there, you can have a complete meal for less than 4 $ !!! it's look like a cafeteria and it's not only "dirty homeless" who go there. i really saw all kinds of people.

my dad is social worker and often he help families in their budget. if there's no addiction problems, often it's just a better organisation that is needing.

if a person is young, without young kids... i think that it's very sad when a person don't want to work or go to school.. so much energy, all their future... and they prefer selling drugs or beg on the same corner for years...or wait for their b.s.
at least they could do like forest gump and walk...

why? = drugs and mental problems are society problems. alot of people are in the street because of the "desinstitutionalisation".. when you are in centre d'acceuil all your childood and teenager years...or in prison for a long time...or in mental institution.. it's very hard that you can rehabilitate these persons. well.. with the system at the moment. at least some miracle/resilience happen!

i think it's a collective responsability that we put into the end of our governement who is really happy that poor people exist...because without poor people, there wouldn't exist rich people.

Alright, but don't forget that there are alot of people out there who can't find work as easily as most people because they're physically or mentally handicaped. Should we leave them behind to die in the streets because of some unfortunate predisposition?

we should exterminate them like hitler did at the begening of the nazi germany.

no seriously the society should realy integrate more these people. starting by stoping the exlusion.. decriminalize drugs. you can really "feel" a society when you observe how the governement threat childrens, handicaped people..

the government gives them welfare + extra money for being handicapped. Some people get more than others but it's always more than regular welfare. People with narcolepsy get a ton of money.

but thats past the point, the point is that giving people food and blankets never helped anyone out. You fill their stomach and keep their body warm but nothing else changes. I don't rmemeber this expression exactly but it goes something like.. if you give a friend a fish you feed them for a day, if you teach a friend how to catch fish you feed them and their families for life times. We have to teach them to get their own food and blankets and unfortunately handing them material possesions isn't gonna help. Handing them words and knowledge will. I think the food programs are a waste of money, I think it can be better allocated in programs for homeless people that give them nothing material.
I'm feeling long gone right now..

Not so long ago when I was working also at the deli department at my job, there was this young man bumming in front of the grocery, asking for food also. I made him this HUGE chicken sandwich, one that I would have done for myself with everything in it. When I gave it to him, he declined it, saying he was vegetarian...

i dont want to start another debate on vegetarian, but when you are very hungry, if you wont die from it, you eat it damn!
I use to be very poor once with not always a meal everyday, when a charity center gave me mushroom sauce for my pasta, even tought I hate mushroom, I said thank you and just fucking ate it.
I'm feeling busy right now..

i know of far to many "street" kids who go home to nice houses at the end of the day

or who manage to pan handle enough to pay their own rent and junk habits.

its disgusting. stop begging for change you fuckass and get a job like the rest of us. hhmmmpphh. twats.

not all of the people who do that are fuckass's by the way

sophia and i talked about this yesterday .

i mean honestly, if everyone on this planet can get a job( okay not everyone) then why cant they? i totally agree with that.

i hate seeing people begging for change , to be honest, i feel more sorry for them then anything. but that still wont make me give them anything. most of these people arent mentally handicapped, or fucked up in anyway, they just smell likenasty feet, and drink beer.

dthey are just lazy.

i feel like most of these kids think that this is a way to live. as if begging on the corner is a full time job.

anyway... its too bad you coulndt get a meal from them, but still you dont have to hate on these people
