RAVER PORN BUST
FEATURED ARTICLE

One of Montreal's premiere nightlife websites is in uproar after it was revealed that three of its users hacked into computers belonging to members. They were looking for amateur porn, and whenever they found any they'd post it to an underground website that they started back in February.

The site had over a hundred and fifty members before it was shuttered last week. Thousands of pornographic pictures and videos were traded on the underground forum, the majority of it stolen from unsuspecting Montrealers.

The hackers used two methods to find the porn. Their preferred method was to trick their victims into downloading malware. They'd send them emails and facebook messages asking them to check out a link or file that would install a remote access trojan on to their computers. Their second method, and the one that lead to their getting caught, was to physically infect the computers of their targets using a USB flash drive.

They tried doing the latter at a house party, when someone stumbled onto what they were doing and called them out on it. Everything unraveled shortly after that.

If you're a Montreal party goer who has kept amateur porn on your computer, you might be a victim. Your dirty smut might now be in the hands of strangers. To find out if your files have been leaked to the internet, please send copies to noah@rave.ca, where they'll be compared against the database of stolen porn.

John Denver - Sunshine on My Shoulders
[Chorus:]
Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

If I had a day that I could give you
I'd give to you the day just like today
If I had a song that I could sing for you
I'd sing a song to make you feel this way

[Chorus]

If I had a tale that I could tell you
I'd tell a tale sure to make you smile
If I had a wish that I could wish for you
I'd make a wish for sunshine for all the while

[Chorus]

NAACP: Mumia Abu-Jamal Removal Off Death Row Signals Turning Tide Against Capital Punishment

Hundreds of supporters of the imprisoned journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal gathered last week in Philadelphia to mark the 30th anniversary of his arrest for the killing of a white police officer. The event occurred just two days after Philadelphia prosecutors announced they will no longer seek the death penalty for Abu-Jamal. We ask NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous to comment on the developments in his case. "The fact that Seth Williams felt, the D.A. in Philly, felt emboldened to come forward and to ask for something that was so reasonable and so just in a city with such a conservative law-enforcement history, really is testament to the fact that public support for the death penalty has fallen to an all-time low since it was reinstated in the wake of Troy Davis’s execution," Jealous says. [includes rush transcript]

JUAN GONZALEZ: Ben Jealous, I’d like to ask you about another topic. Hundreds of supporters of the imprisoned journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal gathered last week in Philadelphia to mark the 30th anniversary of his arrest for the killing of a white police officer. The event occurred just two days after Philadelphia prosecutors announced that they will no longer seek the death penalty for Mumia. On Friday, Abu-Jamal, a former Black Panther, called in to the event to make his first public remarks since the prosecutor’s decision was announced. We’re going to play that clip.

MUMIA ABU-JAMAL: For the first time in almost 30 years, I’m not on death row physically. I’m in a new block called an AC block. The cells are somewhat identical to death row, but no one on this block is on death row, including myself. It takes some getting used to, you see. I’m still acclimating myself.

AMY GOODMAN: Ben Jealous, your reaction to the decision of the district attorney in Philadelphia?

BENJAMIN JEALOUS: Yeah, this is confirmation that the Troy Davis case is having an effect. The reality is that the court of public opinion is very closely tied to the court of law in these cases. And I think that the fact that Seth Williams felt, the DA in Philly felt, emboldened to come forward and to ask for something that was so reasonable and so just, in a city with such a conservative law enforcement history, really is testament to the fact that public support for the death penalty has fallen to an all-time low since it was reinstated, in the wake of Troy Davis’s execution.

AMY GOODMAN: And finally, this just coming out yesterday, North Carolina’s governor halting a Republican effort to dismantle a law that gives death row prisoners a new way to argue that racial bias influenced their sentences. Governor Beverly Perdue vetoed a bill that would have essentially repealed 2009’s Racial Justice Act. How significant is this, Ben?

BENJAMIN JEALOUS: You know, it’s very significant. All that that bill does is take the law back to what it was in the 1970s, when the death penalty was abolished nationally. What it says is that statistics of discrimination—this was the so-called Racial Justice Act—statistics of widespread racial discrimination can be used as proof in a court of law. We’ve been subject to the intent doctrine for decades now, this notion that racism can’t be proven to exist, unless you can prove what’s going on in an individual’s head, what their actual intent was. You know, and she did—the Governor did the right thing by standing up for common sense and saying, "Look, if we have a law that is being used almost exclusively against the poor and almost—you know, and hugely disproportionately against people of color, then we, as a state, through our court system, should be able to call it into question, and if we deem that it’s so racist that it’s not fixable, be able to strike that law down."

AMY GOODMAN: Ben Jealous, we want to thank you for being with us, president and CEO of the NAACP, a co-author of the new report, "Defending Democracy: Confronting Modern Barriers to Voting Rights in America."

what I'm surprised is that a so basic process can be tampered with. I understand high level, be it application, presentation and maybe session level, have to be so flexible as to allow to be tempered with but this is the transport layer! nothing should be able to be moved around, if it doesn't pass the strictest of verification, the signal is skipped, no fucking around!

the pareto principle shouldn't apply to such a low level IMHO, they should have blast shelter door welded from inside. maybe I live in fantasy land but I wasn't expecting that kind of thing after windows 95 ; getting in from a closed port...

Let's learn TCP/IP !

TCP/IP is the communication protocol for the Internet.
Computer Communication Protocol

A computer communication protocol is a description of the rules computers must follow to communicate with each other.
What is TCP/IP?

TCP/IP is the communication protocol for communication between computers on the Internet.

TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol.

TCP/IP defines how electronic devices (like computers) should be connected to the Internet, and how data should be transmitted between them.
Inside TCP/IP

Inside the TCP/IP standard there are several protocols for handling data communication:

* TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) communication between applications
* UDP (User Datagram Protocol) simple communication between applications
* IP (Internet Protocol) communication between computers
* ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) for errors and statistics
* DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) for dynamic addressing

TCP Uses a Fixed Connection

TCP is for communication between applications.

If one application wants to communicate with another via TCP, it sends a communication request. This request must be sent to an exact address. After a "handshake" between the two applications, TCP will set up a "full-duplex" communication between the two applications.

The "full-duplex" communication will occupy the communication line between the two computers until it is closed by one of the two applications.

UDP is very similar to TCP, but simpler and less reliable.
IP is Connection-Less

IP is for communication between computers.

IP is a "connection-less" communication protocol.

IP does not occupy the communication line between two computers. IP reduces the need for network lines. Each line can be used for communication between many different computers at the same time.

With IP, messages (or other data) are broken up into small independent "packets" and sent between computers via the Internet.

IP is responsible for "routing" each packet to the correct destination.
IP Routers

When an IP packet is sent from a computer, it arrives at an IP router.

The IP router is responsible for "routing" the packet to the correct destination, directly or via another router.

The path the packet will follow might be different from other packets of the same communication. The router is responsible for the right addressing, depending on traffic volume, errors in the network, or other parameters.
Connection-Less Analogy

Communicating via IP is like sending a long letter as a large number of small postcards, each finding its own (often different) way to the receiver.
TCP/IP

TCP/IP is TCP and IP working together.

TCP takes care of the communication between your application software (i.e. your browser) and your network software.

IP takes care of the communication with other computers.

TCP is responsible for breaking data down into IP packets before they are sent, and for assembling the packets when they arrive.

IP is responsible for sending the packets to the correct destination.
