Ip Addresses?

 Coolness: 33505 | can anyone explain to me why users ip addresses are posted in these forums? does anyone else think this is as sketchy as i do? its a pretty big violation of privacy. who put them up to this and why? |

You'd have to have access to very special and limited resources to figure out more than the general location of someone (i.e. Montreal). Or you could use a proxy if you're so paranoid. I mean, you chose to upload personal photos (assuming the pics in your profile are of you), you obviously don't mind having THAT part of your privacy violated? I dunno. I don't mind. Perhaps our overload will address your concern himself. Nuclear? |

 Coolness: 166525 | It's 'cause we have nothing to hide, and are fearless ;) ... but I understand the concern. With a more popular site, one that's global like Facebook, I'd hate to have my IP posted. But here ... who cares? If someone was going to abuse the info, they'd've done it a long time ago.
On the definite upside (and IMO the main reason for it), having IP addresses posted has saved us from alot of 'net Trolls. This also stops potential Trolls from having 2 or more profiles without us knowing, and also deters ppl from trying to hijack another account. We have enough drama as it is, we don't need ppl being anonymous about it and/or making it worse xD Y'see, making some information public can be used as much for protection as for evil ;) So, as said, if you don't like it then don't post (well, too late for that xD ) ... and let us worry about our rights. We're all pretty rebellious people (and fairly Internet savvy), so if it bothered us we would tell Noah and he would get rid of the IP line. |

| Coolness: 33505 | i'll admit i don't know much about using ips to spy on people but several people have given me the impression that it is pretty easy to find people's locations including home address and postal code, what they are downloading, their online activities, what operating system they use, what browser etc... this information could be used by hackers, authorities, or crusty assholes in online beefs. maybe i'm wrong. i don't know much about the subject. but i still don't understand what is the intended purpose of this. why was it added to the site? can anyone give me one good reason for this being here? i guess the troll thing is kind of a reason. although if people want to have more than one account it not hard to work around. trolls and drama on this site could just as easily be used as reasons NOT to post ips! IMO anyway |

 Coolness: 129700 | It is a security issue definitely, my computer was hacked a few years and I highly suspect it was people that frequent this site who got my ip from here and used it for their attack.
Its important to remember there have been a couple of self proclaimed hackers on this site, so I'd strongly advise you getting an anti virus or some kind of anti-hacker protection before surfing this site lol... As for the troll thing, I highly doubt its the real reason, since lets be honest most of the regulars troll this site regularily, getting into petty arguements over whose father is stronger, and I've yet to see anyone banned for bad behavior. Besides Im pretty sure Noah dosent need to have everyones ip advertised to ban someone if he wanted to. And while we're on the topic two other things I find annoying is not being able to delete certain photos and not being able to clean out my message box. Thats my two complaints about the site. |

 Coolness: 91370 | Also let's not forget that a lot of ISP in Montreal operate on DHCP IP designation, meaning your address always changes once in a while. I doubt a lot of folks here are paying for a dedicated IP address as well. |

 Coolness: 131575 | its not a privacy issue. far from it , if you think your ip is safe your in the wrong. if your think your private network is secure your in the wrong. if you think anything can be anonymous online your in the wrong. humans dont put satellite in space to look at the sky anymore , they've turn it toward themselves for some good old peons barons and lords style of overwatch. so like its said you long in only when you want to post , you lurk the site without and then your ip doesnt show up to most people . but im quite shure some site statistics can be elevated to retreive it anyways.
