The Pixies track on there is one of the best fusions of nu skool breakbeat with a rock tune I've ever come across...

Its one of my favorite vinyls in the whole world and very very rare!

Rule #1

Have some girls in da house, stop promoting to a small clique of cynical anglo male djs in their 30s who are still fasinated by watching another male play random songs of vinyl.

No one cares if the Cyndi lauper song got played off a 99 cent vinyl or a greatest hits cd from the 80s. Trust me

Rule #2

Get paid. You could have easily made good money for that gig. Remember djing is a service. I play in tons of places, always get paid, and I always play what I want.

Rule #3

Nights that try to cover every style of music are fairly common and not as exciting to the average club goer as you may think. My suggestion is too pick a general style of music.

For example, you could do breakbeats, like I do, which automatically allows you to play anything as long as it uses a breakbeat, so right there, you have funk, hip hop, 2 step, dubstep, baile funk, big beat, breakcore, funk rock, dnb, nu skool breaks, electro funk, downtempo and any other non 4X4 style that you can think of.

Or you could do an electro night, another style I play, and right there, you got all the new wave shit, the detroit stuff, the electrofunk, the electro pop stuff, you can even throw on some techno since electro was a precursor to techno...

I mean its cool to be versatile, but it needs to be done using common sense.

My 2 cents

Although I do find it ironic that you say you play cds "from time to time" and then rag me out for playing cds "from time to time"

Like I said we're both doing exactly the same thing (vinyl and cd)...bringing music to the public :)

Cool, but isn't that a personal preference,

How can you take that and start designating who is a real dj or not,

What makes a real dj for me (and incidentally why I respect you a lot), is above all experience, knowledge of music, good technique and good selection.

If you started playing cds or final scratch tommorrow, it wouldn't change my opinion of how good a dj you are.

I had fun, except getting lost like a homeless fuck on my way there and wandering around under the underpasses for an hour with a hundred kilos of records on my back cursing like a Scottish drunk.

Good party and great sets from Stalker and Subtone as well as the Quebec boys...du bon drum n bass comme on l'aime...

& Iznogood gets the prize for most experimental set...that guy is truly an insane selectah. Big up! ;)

Are those like cds, but like sound worse cause its like mp3s and like all your songs on a computer? lol...

P.S. When Assault came to Montreal for the first time back in 2001 (Chemistry, Blizzarts, Saturdays), I'm pretty sure he had cds...not that anyone gave a shit

I used to manage a record store called NOIZE, mainly vinyl, back in 99...

I remember kids coming in with crates and crates of trance or techno 12"s they wanted to get rid off, thousands and thousands of records,

No one wanted them, not the stores, not the people, nobody, cause so much of it was garbage for lack of a better term.

On the other hand, all the more experimental and innovative stuff, from ambient to IDM, dnb and breakbeats, you could buy and sell very quickly, sometimes at a higher price than the what the record would have cost new.

Even today, an original Aphex Twin "Auto Hangable Lightbulb" ep, a record which was criminally overlooked when it came out, can fetch you up to 500 pounds, while I still see millions of Tiesto records collecting dust in dollar bins.

Any thoughts?

If you could fast forward ten years from now...

Which of the two genres do you think will be regarded as more musically relevant (mainly in terms of innovation) for its time?

Discuss...

Obviously anyone can put on a mix cd press play and wank, you can also put an album on your record player press play and wank...I don't really get what your point is aside from insinuating that a guy playing cds might be playing a pre-recorded mix, which would be fairly obvious (and lame) cause he won't see him mixing lol...

Trust me mixing two track together, whether on wax or cd, demands the same amount of attention and skill, you're just using another medium...although honestly I do find mixing wax is easier and more hands on...

Anyhow everyone knows I own a massive record collection, that I buy new records every week, sometimes by the thousands...so if a dude has an issue with me playing cds I just tell them:

"I can rock wax too, I own decks, I own thousands of records and all the music you're hearing I've bought or traded for legit, so get off my dick and listen to the music" lol...

And just to throw one back atcha ;) I'm gonna make a wild assumption that pretty much every international guest that has ever played Mix Thursdays, from Deekline to Dj Assault used a computer or cds...

If they did, did you reprimand them and did it have a huge impact on the night? Or were people more preoccupied with the actual music the dj was playing
