Well, perhaps its better that I didn't make it out then. At least I did my homework.

I was really looking forward to it too, I never get to see beat juggling in real life, only in usually shitty quality videos on the interwebs. But for some unknown reason, I thought that it was happening today instead of yesterday, so despite the sucky outcome, you should throw another one that I can actually show up to this time. What was so bad about it anyway?
I'm feeling labs up the ass. right now..

Very few people, me not in great shape, physically, mentally and therefore DJ-wise. Sarcastic did a killer set for the 10 people who were there.

musically the night was, imho, pretty shit-hot... and went all over the place... Steely Dan, DJ Assault, Gowan, Akufen, Turbonegro, Mr. Oizo, Judas Priest, Bong Ra, Noize Creator, Beastie Boys, Hall & Oates, Doormouse, Christoph de Babalon, Frank Zappa, DJ Valium, Duran Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, Alice Cooper... and I finished things up with a cut by Telly Savalas... pure audio chaos that made sense some of the time, showcased some ridiculously creative selections and mixing... and featured a three-way tag-team between myself, In Your Face and Sarcastic.

the sucky part is that a good portion of the small crowd showed up before 11pm... and the night ended up costing me more money than I can really afford at the moment. It sucks to be back in school and only working about ten hours a week...

I paid two covers, spun the wheel for two drinks, I stayed 20 minutes. The concept was rad, the music was rad, sorry I couldn't have stayed longer, but in terms of support, I was there. I don't want to be a dick, but what were you expecting? 500 people? A charity drive? I mean if you wanna run profitable sausage parties, more promo in the gay village is needed, or something. Otherwise I'm not too sure what else could have went off at this point in time for the target demographic. And you lost money, why wasn't the event done in a free venue? Or at least negotiated better? If you are gonna come out blazing the trail of terror with financial expectations, well, welcome to the world of Trotch I guess, thousands of dollars down the toilet, all the free names in the newspapers you can eat. You win some, you lose some.
I'm feeling belligerent right now..

small losses on a club night are a world different than investing in a record label... for the record, I bought the vinyl and I played it out. I whole-heartedly endorse the quality of Trotch product - so all you kids that are into mutant beats, if the bickering and sniffling in this thread hasn't turned you off yet - go out and get yourself some Trotch!

Rule #1

Have some girls in da house, stop promoting to a small clique of cynical anglo male djs in their 30s who are still fasinated by watching another male play random songs of vinyl.

No one cares if the Cyndi lauper song got played off a 99 cent vinyl or a greatest hits cd from the 80s. Trust me

Rule #2

Get paid. You could have easily made good money for that gig. Remember djing is a service. I play in tons of places, always get paid, and I always play what I want.

Rule #3

Nights that try to cover every style of music are fairly common and not as exciting to the average club goer as you may think. My suggestion is too pick a general style of music.

For example, you could do breakbeats, like I do, which automatically allows you to play anything as long as it uses a breakbeat, so right there, you have funk, hip hop, 2 step, dubstep, baile funk, big beat, breakcore, funk rock, dnb, nu skool breaks, electro funk, downtempo and any other non 4X4 style that you can think of.

Or you could do an electro night, another style I play, and right there, you got all the new wave shit, the detroit stuff, the electrofunk, the electro pop stuff, you can even throw on some techno since electro was a precursor to techno...

I mean its cool to be versatile, but it needs to be done using common sense.

My 2 cents

To Bliss:
1. We flyered : (amongst other places) clothing stores, universities, streets, restaurants... 4 places where girls can be found.

2. As far as money is concerned, we're still in that uphill battle where we don't really make the rules for now. On the bright side, though we did lose money, we all drank for free, and quite a lot I must say.

3. True, I was just talking to Fishead about doing something more precise.

even though i had to leave early and the turnout wasn't spectacular, it was an all around good idea

a multi-genre evening can appeal to a broad amount of people

keep your heads up, one night is not derivative of what other events will be

take care and all the best

and your random drink wheel is biased! i spun 3 times and got white russians everytime! :P

cheers

I got vodka solid the first time around... and later on, for a round of three shots we got two choco moosts and a shot of malibu... is it possible that the random drink selector was governed by an unseen force that decided the drinks for us?

For the record, I tried to make the drink wheel as random as possible, playing around with how tight the screw was, adding a bit of weight here and there, etc. The last test I did was pretty promising, landing at least once on all 6 drinks in about 10-15 spins.

Now that the initial anger and disappointment has dissipated, I might look into doing another Random night, though some stuff's gotta change.

no... but I've been hella yelled at by girls who were stupid enough to take off their glasses and tell me to aim for their face. I was all like... "hey... I'm just following orders."

Yeah, girls, when you say "jizz on me, anywhere you want", you can expect like a 90% probability of face-spooging.
