creasote I think! Basically it's tar, or the byproduct of combustion, so basically it can't burn anymore. it's carcinogenic, not toxic, but again, not in the tiny levels that might still exist at 3810

thanks for the info. :)

tiny levels? i'm not so sure about that........ the whole wooden floor is treated with it, and the particles are everywhere in the air we breathe... the dust that accumulates on the pipes on the ceiling is all black and oily, and that would also be the reason why the couches have that disgusting feel to them.

going there once in a while is not enough to be dangerous, but... i think of the people who live there. just seeing the crap that gets stuck in my nose after being in that place for a couple of hours makes me wonder what it does to their lungs in the long-term...

it's like when we were living at the 1619 william, and then we learned that the air was full of silica dust leftover from when they sandblasted the walls to have the nice bricks, and that long-term exposure to this can cause really bad lung diseases... treatement to get rid of the silica particles in a building is expensive and the landlord didn't want to do it... but get a building inspector in there and i'm pretty sure there would be problems.

but yeah hmm this is all pretty much what happens with illegal or semi-legal occupation of old industrial buildings...

The main purpose of wooden brick floor was to absorb oil leaks from the industrial process going on.

3810 St-Patrick was the Crane Valve Co.

They used to manufacture pipes, valves and anything related to plumbing.

Here are pictures from an old painting that used to be in the building's lobby, until around 2002.

They removed it when they started using this place for raves. It clearly shows the bricks:

[ img716.imageshack.us ]

[ img153.imageshack.us ]

[ img249.imageshack.us ]

Therefore, these bricks act as sponge for really bad chemicals that used to be processed there.

One of their secondary function was to absorb vibration and reduce noise related to manufacturing processes.

The main issue with such wooden floor is not really creosote, but rather PBC !!!

The level of PBC contamination at 3810 St-Patrick is beyond anything legal and safe. Oil was the main carrier of PBC.

PBC is highly toxic in VERY LOW concentrations. It bio-accumulates ( it builds up in concentration in your fat tissues and hardly desapears after)

Here are some pictures we took from the now demolished Jenkins Valves Factory, in Lachine. A similar factory with similar production. Damn I had fun in that place as kid, not realizing the kind of chemicals I was messing with !!!

[ img696.imageshack.us ]

[ img688.imageshack.us ]

[ img163.imageshack.us ]

[ img43.imageshack.us ]

[ img23.imageshack.us ]

The vacant lot is now one of the most PBC contaminated lot in Canada and cancer rates around the former factory are about 20 times higher than Montreal's.

says the guy with the gasmask......... ;)
this is disturbing... it means that the whole area needs a cleanup. so would you say raving at 3810 st-patrick is not safe?
i'm gonna go find more info about all of this.

yoshin :
There is definetly some safety issue around this. PCB is dangerous and expect today's ravers to have a significantly higher rate of infertility, cancer, etc.

Having 200 people dancing on a contaminated floor, moving around contaminated dust, breathing it like crazy, spending week-ends after week-ends there !!!

I haven't been to 3810 since many months but I clearly remember that oily PBC smell !!! The last time I smelled it so bad was in an abandoned, contaminated factory...

Living in 3810 is definetly a bad idea, especially for the people directly next to the wooden floor rooms.

i don't think i'll be going back there, then. i don't mind partying a million times in the same place, but it has to be safe. i care about myself and other party people. especially after reading this, we really need to find a new place to party.

i feel so protective of those younger ravers, like they're all young brothers and sisters and i want them to be healthy lol. :) we don't need to have parties all the time. concentrate on finding a better place. more quality is better.

I should mention that the wooden bricks at 3810 have been mostly removed from the main room and given the amount of parties that have happened there and the fact that the windows are open during the summer, there can't be huge concentrations of any serious chemicals left. If anything they are in my lungs instead....
anyway, eat pineapple after partying there, cleanses the lungs :P

I've always felt sick after partying at 3810 st-Patrick. The first time I went I said something was off with the place, I didn't feel well, my bf points to the floor and explained the condition of the building. And with each time I went back I would sick sooner and sooner. I don't mean dramatic sick, just not well, like having a mild allergy attack, just uncomfortable and often have to go out for air. I usually smoke at parties and I rarely do when I am there, can't even smoke a j.

On a more positive note, I've been dreaming of a prog and psy event forever, and I missed it!!! Had an essay to hand in yesterday (and got one more). I do hope, you guys will put another one together!! Congrats on an amazing party (which I hear it was, and the comments confirm it)! Keep it coming :)

did anyone notice that in Europe prog-psy is called psy-gressive, or is prog-psy just the french term?

I don't produce music and thus do not know any terms per say, although I did enjoy your track. I don't know what it would sound like in big speakers. It can sound completely different from listening to it at home after producing it and than in a big system at a rave. It often has to do with mastering (and other things I don't know the term for), and trust me I know, my bf produces psytrance. It's hard work and a whole learning process. Your track has many elements I like to see in a psy track, you have the trance gene ;) Practice makes perfect.

Great event. Thanks.

And anyone throwing a party at 3810 St. Patrick is welcome to hire me to work at cleaning the place for at least 8 hours for a couple free entries...

FIY, I was the one who cleaned all the windows in the main room before Sensient. After a couple years of seeing the same hand drawings in the dusty windows, figured that was long enough, as cute as they were...

Keep on trucking

John refuses to remove the rest of the bricks. As a matter of fact !! He intends on putting the bricks back in the main room at some point !! (although I doubt it will ever happen) I've told him a million times that they are fucking nasty and consequently he blames me for destroying the building. (Even for parties that I have nothing to do with)

So .. The moral of the story is. John wants ravers dead. Then he wants to take our money and frolic around naked in a pile of toxic bricks. THE END.

This year I brought the fire department (Marie Soleil from Service d'Incendie de Montréal‎, 4398 Lasalle Boul) to see 3810 with me and she said the capacity is about 200 people but could be more if there are some changes to the place. They said the place is much better equipped to throw an event then when they last went there to check it out many years ago.

A funny thing she said was the strobe fire lights which could be used to have a higher capacity. I kind of laughed thinking a bunch of strobe lights going off at a party instead of a bell would not make anyone leave. Another suggestion was to make a separate hall going to the side fire exit which could be done very easily.

She also said a lot of the fire rules are for the more modern buildings which are not made like the old ones. For the most part 3810 is a fire proof building but the codes are for the new ones which burn easily. It's a large mess because rules are updated but there are only one set of rules for all buildings.

When I told then fire department I would be doing my event at 3810 and would have about 350 people they said there should be no problems as long as there is no alcohol served. This was for Bass Fest and Aftermath I asked for since I wanted to get a permit only to find out no permit is needed if you do not sell alcohol.

I did this cause of Aftermath which by the way Des Carrieres has a capacity of about 200 people also LEGALLY! I have the option of suing the city now since the report claims I had almost 200 people but obviously I don't have the time to do it but I can make sure that never happens again by knowing.

T'as auusi reçu des bons commentaires?
