police tried to write Krista a sound violation ticket when she played with us at bluedog in 2001, tekstyle night so i guess it was a techno, maybe tech-house type set. krista was DJing and somehow the police thought it was appropriate to ask her for her I.D. so they could write her a personal ticket for playing the music too loud, or some shit. needless to say i sacrificed myself to the cause, freaked the fuck out, and the cops wrote me a ticket instead. [ www.rave.ca ] i don't think she was very impressed with the level of professionalism of tekstyle hahah, and i dunno, that may be the last time i saw her.

krista also wrote a column for the Mirror called Drop the Needle about local electronic events and DJs , (remember those! hahaha) [ www.montrealmirror.com ] here is one from 1998 where she talks about Jumpin Jack Frost comin to the Session! I remember that night, it was dope and JJF didn't beatmatch for shit, but did like 300 rewinds throughout the night. it was live nevertheless..

how come links within [ rave.ca ] never work when i post them, any ideas anyone ? if i copy paste the url into a new browser it works, however i cannot even write it here and have it display , it just creates the [ rave.ca ] link shortcut instead. this is what the first link should be [ ] [ www.rave.ca ] obviously take away the space after the [ ] and it should work in another browser. any help on this issue would be appreciated
Update » Czarkastik wrote on Sat May 1, 2010 @ 1:20pm
yeh this makes no sense, somehow one of those links works, but when i copy the url of the working link (it's the third one in the update) it still doesn't work from the main body. same thing happened when i posted event link to the iznogood event may 8th .. confused

Those shows were wicked, such a great reference for electronic music (remember this was before the internet, we were still passing around mixtapes back then if you can believe

To me Gnat was fucking pioneer all the way, first guy to play uk breakbeat in Montreal, and probably the first guy to ever play dnb in this city (although I could be wrong)

He was such an awesome dude as well, fucking miss that guy!

which seems far.. but I know for a fact that Chicago peeps drove all the way up to T.O. in 93,94,95 for jungle jams, so I guess it makes sense that Toronto peeps would go south for Chicago house

anyway it has DNA / Harmony with a Montreal number listed as one of the "lifelines"

haha I'm all flyer-detective =) I just find it intriguing that there was some kind of Montreal-Chicago connection

ya I'm totally amazed that they survived too! it was a nice surprise. I lost a bunch of other ones though .. like these ones below.

I found these copies of em online, but really wish I still had the originals. back when they came out I had em taped up on my wall =) the Terminator one was my favourite

the Syrous flyers were all designed by Chris Smart AKA Sigma 7 ... he was the guy who founded Syrous. he's the best - his flyers were like little pieces of art.. made the jams seem kinda exotic and mystical - which they were, to us back then...

that was Kenny Ken's first appearance outside England and he fucking killed it. and Daren Jay's set is even more epic... man - those DJs just used to tear it up.

word. well Sigma 7 was on MSN yesterday, so I asked him about these Montreal DJs he booked for those jams...

and he told me Double A & Twist actually had a release on Basement records... which is one of the pioneering jungle tekno labels in England ...

I play a lot of the early Basement, so that was a big surprise to me. I looked it up and sure enough there was their release on Basement in 1997, with their profile, under the artist name Dune.

ya i really have no idea if she was playng jungle, cuz actually only a few people on those flyers are actually jungle DJs - there was two rooms - so the rest were playing housey stuff, breaks, techno, whatever

one name that it on those flyers, and seemed to be on sooo many good lineups back then.. was Algorhythm ... sick sick sick techno DJ. legendary in Toronto - been around for ever and really did a lot to push proper underground techno in that city...

he was famous for being able to have 3 turntables going, take a washroom break, come back and they'd still be locked =)

anyway, I had a funny moment in 2006... I'm at this afterparty... so me and my friend who was hosting the party and a couple people that I didn't know were standing out on the patio having a smoke..

we started reminiscing about the old days in Toronto.. and I say "whatever happened to Algorhythm? I wonder what he's doing now?" everybody laughed and my friend says - "he's right there!" ... it was one of the guys standing right next to me that I was chatting to. lol

I guess you had to be there, but the statistical probability of that happening was pretty fucking low =)

nice one - Grooverider in 94 would have been amazing!!

and when you say they were playing Reinforced... what type of Reinforced? I just ask cuz it's my favourite label.. but it covered such a long span.... from 1990 with Mr Kirk's Nightmare - > and it's all good... if DJs who were pushing that sound, that's a good thing for the scene, cuz they were putting out proper quality underground hardcore / jungle / D&B... really groundbreaking interesting stuff that was nothing like any other jungle

those guys were jazz musicians before they got into hip hop or acid house or anything.. jazz and detroit techno are their big influences

in Toronto DJs like Dr. No, Medicine Muffin and Jungle Phd were big into pushing the Reinforced sound... 4 Hero, Manix, Tek 9 (Manix and tek 9 are the two different 4 hero guys solo) Tom & Jerry (4hero side project), Goldie / Rufige Kru - which later spun off into the Metalheadz label when he split with Reinforced

the R is the best! matter of fact I got some gettin shipped to me right now that I'm gonna drop at my next gig.. soooo good =) so ya Mr Sabi - any titles you can name so I have an idea what kinda tracks were gettin play?

wow it's late - lol. more i wanted to ask but time for bed. once again, good thread and thanks everyone for enligtening me!

one last flyer before I go ... this was the last rave i went to back in the day... Speedy J doing a live PA and Legion of Green Men at some dodgy warehouse in the north end... despite the fact that it was held in a very rough area of Hamilton, it was actually a fantastic party! Speedy J killed it.. he was amazing. really nice guy too

I remember I had to leave that party and go straight to work for 8:30 AM Sunday morning. it was at this upscale eatery where I had to help prep Sunday brunch... lol. brutal. the kitchen manager took mercy on me and let me go home to get some sleep =)

I remember hearing Double A & Twist for the first time at the radio station i volunteer at (not them playing but a cut from a record) in, about, '99 and it was pretty much my introduction to d'n'b .. great stuff!

i didn't rave in the 90s, but i loved some of the old hardcore parties from 2000/2001 (no one minds if i add a little word in for the hardcore scene? XD )

the best party was We are Slaves, mostly put together by Cybervamp (R.I.P.) -- and looking at the flyer, i notice some local names that i miss now! like Earthquake.. also noticed Urania who played at the 2nd party i ever went to, Klear-Hize, she was solid, and i wonder what ever happened to her ...

they were amazing back in the day, when they were hungry! played sick underground tunes right in the primetime slot... thing is though... they are capable of brilliance.. but they are catering to young wobble heads, cuz that's where the money is.

I want to see someone who has been DJing / producing since the mid-80s *maturing* as a musician... not pandering to a bunch of rowdy kids. they should still be able to play for the underground heads once in a while, too ...

see these guys have probably every hardcore / jungle /D&B tune that ever came out, plus insane dubplates and specials, plus crazy reggae and acid house and rare groove and soul/funk, hip hop and techno. and they know how to mix it all so well. it's a shame to see such legendary talent wasted on wobble.

but that's how they eat, so I understand. who knows - maybe they genuinely love it too.

if I was a rich man I'd pay thema lot of money to come to some chill loft party or small club and get em to play a set of strictly dubplates and specials from the early days, just like they used to.

haha glad to see Algorithim is appreciated so much - he is amazing. I heard he moved to Berlin but I dont know.

I am curious - what are these 12 " "ragaambient jungle releases" you speak of?

ok just a couple more flyers

this was for a record release party.. was going to be lauched by Marcus, Medicine Muffin, Dr. No and crew - "Dutty records -- Toronto's first jungle label". I was totally stoked for this, but then the jam was cancelled and the label never launched =(
as the Brits like to say, "I was absolutely gutted, mate!"

oh snap

ok. ok. this party here, I went asking for on Sigma's site the other day. one of my favourite parties... just insane.. so somebody found me the flyer and scanned it... which is the most insane timewarp ever. I hadn't seen that flyer since the night of the jam - over 15 years ago.

No Fear - thrown by Warriors of the Dance - featuring Dj Krome and Mr Time

fucking Krome & Time !! - if you dont know them, this was the kind of music they were doing back then:

and they had Mr. Time MCing !!

and the rest of the lineup is sick too..

I think this party might be the best one I ever went to... I have so many happy and super clear memories of this party for some reason. the sun was shining in thru the huge warehouse windows, and there was maybe only 20 of us left on the dancefloor, and the DJs were letting the record play and coming down off the stage and dancing with us =)

and the crowd was so cool - everyone was comin and giving me a pound before they left... there were some pretty gangster-looking people I was chatting to that night, but they were mad cool and friendly to me.

my friends did acid and got too sketched to dance or socialize -lol.. so I was dancing alone right at the front... but mad different people kept coming up and introducing themselves. over the course of the night I felt like I wound up talking to 3/4 of the people there, for real

just a real unity at that jam... sounds cheesy, but it really was like that. and I didn't do drugs back then either - it was just pure good vibes.

oh fair enough.. I am a huge snob haha... cuz I've been into the music a long time. I know what how amazing they were in the early years - 92-95, so I have very high standards for them.

I guess personal taste is personal taste...

but bear with me.. please give these vids a listen.. otherwise it will kind of defeat the purpose of me posting em... do a little taste test =)

see... I know Hype from these days here:

and this is the mixtape series that really blew him up in 1993 - Ruff Stuff:

so compare that musical style and vibe VS this recent live set:

see any difference? I dunno man... seems like night and day to me.

underground rave music got replaced with chav music

just my opinion of course =)

now compare with what 4hero is doing - this is from 2006... and even though they made some of the very best, they don't even make or play jungle / D&B anymore.. they play live instruments and make amazing soulful breakbeat.

considering Hype and 4hero must all be in their 40s, I just think 4hero are ... acting their age a bit more =) =) and showing a bit more sophistication.. instead of playing sets of noisy D&B and jibber jabber MCs that really only appeals to quite young (and new) DnB fans.

as I've said before, i've gotten very well-paid gigs at the Art Gallery of Ontario playing old 4hero and Rufige Kru for wealthy art patrons in their 40s and 50s... and they loved it.. because *good music is good music*

that Machete track and that jibber jabber MC - if I brought that vibe and music I never would have got the booking. that kind of vibe would sketch them out and sound abrasive. it really only has appeal to D&B scenesters.

once again just my 0.02 - flame away =)

yeh, DJ Hype circa 1994, 96 WUZ THE SHIT !!! anytime you wanna flame the wobble, sign me up :)

Whenever people ask me who my favourite DJs of all time are I usually say something like Ben Sims, Algorithm, and of course myself heheh, and I've been writing in my bio for 8 years that I played alongside Algorithm -of course I had to book him at one of my nights to make this possible, and the conceited self-righteous ass that I am I also interviewed him at the time for the Hour.

I remember bringing in an extra deck to Bluedog the night that Jeff played at Tekstyle, we put it in front of him on the back of the metal grate/cage that covered the mixers and turntable, basically balanced over the dancefloor at Bluedog, so that he could mix with three decks. I could be wrong but I think I was DJing down the street at Saphir where Kirk6 did a night also every Thursday, so I was running back and forth all night. And I am definitely not mistaken in recalling that, at the end of the night, Jeff Algorithm had broken every record for most alcohol drunk by a performing artist, somehow running up a $90 bar tab (and that was at staff prices, 2$ a drink), wow! what a man!

here is the piece from Feb. 28, 2002 from The Hour

Thu. Mar. 7th: Internationally acclaimed producer/DJ Algorithm, creator of the acclaimed new Force-Lab studio-mixed CD Composure, appears at Bluedog’s Tekstyle Thursday. The busy artist, born Jeff Milligan, answered some of my questions before hopping on a flight.

Hour: Can you explain to the public exactly how "Composure" was created?
Algorithm: I'll try! I first mixed complimentary tracks on a pair of turntables and a standard 3-band mixer, then cut loops of different lengths out of each mix, and applied various EQ settings. I sampled individual instruments out of certain tracks, then started sequencing all of the mixed loops and individual instruments together and added effects. I also used other instruments from my arsenal and continued mixing down until I had an hour’s worth of combinations. I had over 8 Force-Lab artists playing at different times in the mix; by the end I had forgotten what instruments and loops belonged to which artists! Within the CD, I tried to create a sense of linearity and continuity out of static loops. I think it comes across.

Hour: Tell us your recording and touring plans for the spring? What’s scheduled for Revolver and Cynosure? (Jeff manages the two record labels)
Algorithm: In April I will be on tour in The United States, spanning NYC, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco, etc. I then head to Europe again for a month long tour in May, and by the end of June, will be in Tokyo...We’re releasing Cynosure 0006, by Altitude, and Revolver Canada's 0006, by J. Hunsberger. Coming up on Revolver are releases by Tomas Jirku, Pan/Tone, Deadbeat and Akufen. New releases on Cynosure will include work by Tim Bones, Mike Shannon and a top secret remix project, coming out this summer!

Hour: You’ve recently based yourself in Montreal. Why did you choose to do this? What’s your reaction since moving from Toronto?
Algorithm: I moved to Montreal to work more closely with artists on Revolver Canada, Akufen and Deadbeat, and to work closely with Mutek. There is an emphasis placed on cultural development and preservation here, and I have a very high respect for that. Toronto is a city filled with banks. It's a financial centre. If you are a stockbroker, a lawyer or banker, Toronto’s where to live. I'm none of those things. Montreal is becoming very well known internationally for the sound that originates from this city. Labels like Force Inc., which moved here half a year ago, are keenly aware of the movement. There are a lot of eyes on Montreal right now.
I'm feeling 1146/286.5 right now..

This is a totally amazing thread. This is what [ rave.ca ] should be all about, talking about raves, like actual raves, not the little parties that happen today that somebody told you were raves.

First of all Syrous... they used to throw the hugest parties ever. They booked RUN/DMC once in 98, do you remember that?

To date the All Funked Up party that I went to in 1999 takes the cake for the most excessively huge one I went to. 20,000 people or something, I kid you not they packed the Ice Sports Arena in Brampton with more people than was sane, only problem is how little I can still remember... Congo Natty with Skibadee, it was packed but not as good as Dose's Connected parties, I couldn't even get into the one with Roni Size because they had overloaded the place. I remember running into some friends who had gone shortly afterwards and they were totally traumatized, not sure if it was in a good or bad way...

DUDE NO WAY... For your information Sabi Resonance was one of the most crucial events in my raving history. I ended up getting involved with those cats right after the Resonance party that took place at that warehouse off Adelaide. Those were some of the best parties ever! I was working with some people who used to be part of that crew, they had to make up for all the cash one of the promoters, Ariel or something, had stolen from Resonance III... and at the time that I worked with that crew we had brought in X-Dream (yeah, that's right, I used to be into psy) who borrowed my Juno-106 for their set, I ended up getting them too high on shrooms while watching the Marklar episode of South Park so I think they turned it on and then couldn't deal with it. I still have a sound on there that they were using, not too big on Psy anymore and I have to say their set sucked, but it makes the loudest farting bass ever.

Anyway I also remember Algorithm really well, he was the first person I ever met who used that much strange equipment in a live set, I think I saw him play a spot down on Richmond with a Gameboy and Joystick providing sounds and control respectively... the next time I saw him play I couldn't see him at all because the concept of that party (a Fukhouse jam) was to have nothing but two strobe lights going in a totally darkened room. I could see the lights on his sampler, an SU-700 I think, that was about it. I'm surprised I didn't run into anyone while wobbling around in a pitch black room, and it's a good thing nobody had any Pokemon style seizures.

Good times!
I'm feeling shkombombolated right now..
