lol but in all seriousness. it's not a case of Goldie travelling the world beating up any kid who messed about with his tunes on their computer. that's kind of muddying the water a bit. I should clarify. that first incident I mentioned at the record shop - that was way back in the day in London... 93 or so. I've heard conflicting stories, but whatever it was, it was a matter of some well-known guy in his scene who blatantly crossed a line. stuff like that happens from time to time.. in London, Toronto, Detroit.. you just don't usually hear about it. the scene in London, Manchester etc. was always rough. even back in the acid house days a lot of gangster shit went on. I've heard *much* worse stories about how record-related disputes have been handled. back then jungle/D&B was a very tight-knit homegrown scene. all the big producers and DJs knew each other. it was relatively easy to regulate. so if you stepped on anyone's toes, your career could quickly hit a dead end. Goldie, Fabio, Grooverider and some of the others top guys actually banned a big ragga-jungle tune "Incredible" (the same one Ali G uses) from being played at parties. they got fed up with the all the media focus on ragga taking over jungle/D&B, so they used their clout to phase the ragga out. but those days are long gone. totally different ballgame now. it's gone from a London thing to being worldwide, and with the anonymity of the internet, people are pretty much free to do what they want. with regards to the Redeyes remix of Inner City Life. once again.. that was not some random case of him hunting down a bedroom producer. which would be completely ridiculous. Redeyes was a well-known up-and-coming French D&B producer. he remixed arguably one of the biggest D&B tunes ever, and didn't ask or tell the producer who did it. Instead he sent it to directly to Fabio, and the first Goldie heard of it was when Fabio played it on his Radio 1 show. when Redyes showed up at some big D&B night in London, Goldie snapped on him. I don't agree at all with the violence, but considering how it's Goldie's biggest tune, Redeyes should have sent the remix to him first. He should have gone through the proper channel, instead of going over his head just to get it played on the radio. as I said, bootlegs are tricky. if you don't want drama, you put them out as an anonymous white label remix. especially if the producer is a hotheaded rock star like Goldie. putting them out under your own name and then showing up at the same club night is just asking for trouble. and regardless of all that drama, i gotta say... Goldie's early work that he did with Rufige Kru in 92, 93, 94... fucking amazing. I have most of those original 12"s and they are some of the best D&B tunes ever done, IMO. I'm not surprised he is protective of them. |
