Damn, this thread is still alive. Scotty, elitism implies exclusion based on perceived superiority. I dont see how pointing out unethical behaviour is elitest, especially when it's harmful to everyone involved at every level. Furthermore, I didnt claim anything. The facts were blatant and Fred called himself out. I guess the conclusion we're reaching is if you dont have enough respect for yourself to adequetly provide for your own survival and wellbeing, then you cant be expected to respect others.

Fred, you say everything was resolved via PM. I didnt get one...did anyone else in Montreal? I think we we're all owed an apology, bit late now though isn't it? BTW, Alex sent me your labrat bootleg. Good work on the drums, man.

I really couldnt care less if people download released music. There's not much anyone can do to stop it. The main issue is playing out shitty quality rips. Its like taking a photo of a rembrandt with a disposable camera and then throwing an art exhibition. Art noobs wont know the difference, you might get laid, but you will also get blacklisted or your ass kicked if anyone with any credibility finds out.

Playing out unreleased tunes you dont have permission to play is like taking an artist's paycheck and wiping your ass with it. It also comes off as a 2 tonne bs name drop. It's not uncommon for bigger names to decide not to support a track simply because joe bedroomdeejay has it in his tracklisting. It's also not uncommon for labels to sign tracks and then decide not to release them because they show up in torrent or soulseek searches.

depends on the website you go to, digital-tunes has 320, flac and wav all at the same low price... I think pretty much everywhere else, wavs are more expensive... which is why i dont go anywhere else

So basically, for the price of a cd 18-20$ you get 6 songs with no sleeve, no artwork, and no possibility/right to re-sell it.
Sound like a deal to me...

Not exactly.

Usually, in the MP3 business, when you pay a song 2$ or 3$, it is usually a single that you would have bought on vinyl for about 15$. So, yes, you have no sleeve and packaging and all, but you paid about 20% the price for the same track, which I think we can all agree is a fair deal.

Full albums as digital download typically sell for about 10$. Yet again, you have no artwork and no packaging and all, but a new album bought at your average music store is probably more around 17$-18$.
I'm feeling yay right now..

10$ for say 8 to 12 .wav files?

With Vinyl, you paid a lot because the medium is expensive, however, bit's are cheap. With Vinyl, you could be the only person around with a particular record. With the music industry, the way its lining itself up, thats pretty much over because anyone can have any particular file at any given time as long as its released. Witch makes bootleg/unreleased tracks all the more desirable...

ya true. with vinyl... back in the day, a handful of DJs would fight over whatever shipment arrived at the record store. each DJ would snap up the only copy of a really standout tune that came into the city, so that track would be that DJ's signature tune. I would only ever hear certain tunes played by one Toronto DJ, and nobody else. I think having distinct selection is very very important.. tunes that other people don't know about or dont play..

which is why dubplates / unreleased tracks are so valuable. only the producer and the DJs he chooses to represent his sound can play it and that's it.

with regards to people playing leaked dubplates. the producers need to be more careful who they give it to. obviously if some bedroom DJ sees a leaked VIP track floating around on mp3 he's gonna want to play it. so long as the producer only gives the track to responsible people who can be trusted there shouldn't be a problem really.

I certainly never heard of that happening back in the day. back then, and maybe still today, if some dude in London tried to play a stolen dubplate at a gig he would get a vist from the producer and his friends, no doubt. he's be blacklisted for sure and maybe catch a beatdown, too.

A friend in London told me.. back in the early days, some dude did a bootleg that sampled Goldie and was selling it out of his store, without permission. Goldie and his crew came around to the guy's shop.. slapped the guy around, and smashed all the bootleg records up - right then and there.

Goldie also recently (2-3 years ago) threw a french DJ, Redeyes, down a long flight of stairs for having made a bootleg remix of Inner City Life..
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

ya I remember that. bootlegs are tricky. it's cool when people do dubplate verions or whitelabel bootlegs of an old classic, but they gotta be respectful of the original producer's wishes. fucking around with a masterpiece like that, you can get into trouble.. especially when it's a badman like Rufige Kru.

I think the deal was- Goldie actually liked the dubplate remix, but asked him not to play it on the radio or something. whatever he asked him not to do, Redeye went ahead and did it anyway, and then drama ensued.

my friend played on the same bill as him when he got booked in Toronto in 1992. he told me an interesting story about him, when the promoters tried to weasel out of paying him the agreed amount. hehe. Goldie's a rudeboy

He has gone more technical and tracks down people who share his tracks on peer to peer networks. He locates them with their IP address. I've heard this story of Goldie flying all the way around the world to beat the shit out of a 15 year old teen who downloaded one of his tracks.
I'm feeling yay right now..
