lol, dropped hard-drive = totally fucked. You *MIGHT* be able to recover some data by taking it to a professional data-recovery lab, but it's going to cost you a few thousand.

usb hard drive controller burn a lot.

but you can open it , remove the disk from inside , and stack it directly onto your ide port. you will need a ide converter if its a laptop size hd.
Update » cutterhead wrote on Fri Mar 20, 2009 @ 5:54pm
its only the usb part of the drive that is defective . most of the time.

uhmm, he dropped the hard drive.. I'm pretty certain his platters are fucked. I had a drive once fall less than a foot and it was totally fucked.

oh i skipped that part. still, i would try to scrub it.
Update » cutterhead wrote on Fri Mar 20, 2009 @ 5:59pm
i would stack in into a tower , and if BIOS detects it , i would try to access files, and if files cant but drives detect, i would run a series of S.M.A.R.T repair tools, and disk surface scrubber. ( especially for damaged cluster)

but you can not know what is damaged till you pass it directly to the BIOS.

soemtimes a cable breaks off the usb-to-ide converter inside.

Can anyone tell me : aside from the obvious " I can take it anywhere I want " argument, what other benefit is there in having an external drive exactly ?

If I wanna bring some files to a friend's house, I'll just bring a USB key.

yeah yeah i know... now... i should have plugged it inside my computer right away!!!

cuterhead: i plugged the hard drive inside my computer and at the boot they show 2 lines
the first is the id of my first hard drive with its capacity
the second is blank and its written 0 at the end of the line

how bad do you think it is?
can you explain or show me where i can read on S.M.A.R.T repair tools?

i agree , too slow for me , even firewire .

plus true bit manipulation from drive to drive with usb is . shall i say . not fun

virus seems to take a good hold of them too. ( soul pad virus )

im with minus, i dont see any advantages , except for ppl who dont know how to open a computer.

i have a different opinion for portable network storage thou.
Update » cutterhead wrote on Fri Mar 20, 2009 @ 6:26pm
i can lowlevel format them from diskette, and unix way of connecting them withou mounting them is nice , but the ms window intergration sucks.
Update » cutterhead wrote on Fri Mar 20, 2009 @ 6:28pm
STFU > if BIOS doesnt report back the real name & size , there isnt much to do.

some smart fix exist , but its pass that point , your drive head probably are crashed on the disk or the controller got hit in a way some lines are broken off / or shorted.

im sorry , was the BIOS report u just gave me , a USB probe ? or is the drive really inside the computer right now connected to the ide port ?
Update » cutterhead wrote on Fri Mar 20, 2009 @ 6:34pm
honestly the usb controller part is more sensible than the drive itself if you ask me . even if you dropped it.

Sorry STFU, my question wasn't asked as a commentary on your misfortune, I was genuinely asking why so many people are buying external drives and what I'm missing that makes them so appealing. Heh.

Sorry about your disk...

// commentary on your misfortune
... but yeah plug it inside next time.
// end commentary on your misfortune

LOL !

at an utmost last resort, put it in your freezer then try it again. probably a good idea to do this with just the hard drive and not the enclosure...

? - why ? - its not powered anymore - if your trying to get to the flash rom with this one , i doupt it will do a thing. i do lots of repairs , and when a layer get hit too hard ,they un-bind. freezing it wont help.. maybe if you wanted to rip off the flash maybe , but this is an other ordeal

shure no problem , im sorry you lost data, thats sad .

i advise you buy two smaller hd . and keep a duplicate , than buying a bigger one , esp. for that.
Update » cutterhead wrote on Fri Mar 20, 2009 @ 8:23pm
hey for the science, you want to try qfk 's trick. hes right still, got nothing to loose at this point.

so you opened the enclosure of the portable hd to remove it from inside and hook it to the ide ?

that part wasnt clear if you did or just hooked up the usb to the internal usb port :)

my question is pretty idiotic, and and idont want you to be insulted , i jsut want to be shure.

I can answer your question with many different valid points.
consumer perspective
-98% of the population does not know how to install an internal drive
-that same 98% wouldn't know wether to buy a 2.5inch, 3.5inch, IDE, ATA, SCSI, eATA, SATA, etc
-10% of the population of computer owners don't have computers with extra HD slots (me, iMac)
-portability
manufacturer perspective
-external HD are easier to break, so they will be replaced more often
-requires external power supply, good for hydro and PS manufacturers
-takes up a USB/Firewire port, good for USB, firewire manufacturers (hubs, daisy chained appliances)
-can make it 'look' cool
-consumers see it as being really easy
-support, because imagine a dumb ass calling WD asking how to install his new internal HD vs a dumb ass calling to ask how to install an external HD
