cause they don't hehe...

hosting companies always rip people off when getting extra stuff on their server... collocation would be best for that, but then the bandwidth becomes more expensive... it's a loose loose situation...

i tought you were colocating sorry. adding an imac sortage 3tg cube would have being the fastest setup here , and not that expensive considering product given

I was going to collocate. I even have my 1U rack mount sitting on the floor of my apartment. I have a Quad Core Q9450 with 8gigs ram and 2tb of space, but they only give you 500gigs of bandwith when you collocate. To make it goto 3000gigs was like 250$... For 169$ + 10$ for ips I get 3000gigs bandwith on a 100mbps connection with 2 320gig hd's and 2gigs of ram. Ow well... Loose loose situation as I mentioned. 69$ will get my 320gig HD with 2.4 P4 and 3000gigs bandwith. Just I need to host it on another server. I dunno why they can't just give you 3000gigs of extra bandwith for 69$. It's stupid they don't...

250 ! for 3tb

but adding the memory doesnt meant its going to be fully used all the time, couldnt you bottleneck it a little more before downgrade ? or have some quota system.

We'd have to start small I suppose. I would ideally think this would have different sections pertaining to the most popular DAWs and another section with general file formats including .wav, .aiff, .ogg, .mp3, .m4a, .snd and perhaps even .mod, .it, .xm, all that oldskool tracker shit, because I know some of you use that stuff (and well).

The idea at first should be to encourage involvement across a broad spectrum of genres and perhaps push for innovative directions in crossovers (which is inevitably where a lot of the new bold ideas come from imho). We could start with base files and compare end results, have a regular update of .flp or .alv (I'm tired, can't remember if that's the Ableton format or not), .rex files I guess as well, max/msp patches, Reaktor patches, vsts... the tools are there, and I can't understand how anyone can speak of scenes when hardly any of the regulars here are involved in any sort of local label/scene work. Most of the labels are out of town, some that are here are fledgling and well, we don't know who they are...

Which brings me to another point - discussion of new releases in a section on the site, because we are all after all buying records to spin, separated by popular genre, discussion of labels for music, categorized into sub-forums, and all sorts of infrastructure to make the music, which you all know is first and foremost before any misguided sense of "community politics", the focus of the site. Enough with the garbage.

Would that sufficiently add new life and positivity to the so-called "scene" which I can't really establish parameters for and hence have no belief in?

Probably not. But it's worth a try.

Luke:

[ ftp.rave.ca ]

Every .mod, .it and tracker stuff can already be found on modland which I mirror all the time... You can access it from this address above... Very simple... That's one of the reasons my HD is full cause there are like 100gigs of tracks for modland...

[ ftp.rave.ca ]

That would be the modules directory. Lots of different types... Almost everything is there...

Excellent! Now what we need is the forum section so that we can keep any work on this stuff organized... but seriously, we can't work with only mods... that only represents a small, geeky minority of producers. Try to master in Impulse Tracker. Can't be done...
Update » JasonBeastly wrote on Thu Jan 8, 2009 @ 12:36pm
Also, how much of that stuff is local talent? And how much of it is actually any good? You better not have "Trash Collector" in the mods section for Fast- or Pro Tracker. So 1998.

Anyway, I hope that you aren't dismissing the idea Noah, I can't understand what's stopping you, because those extra costs per month are totally affordable by community members. Really, we need to push what's going on here instead of spinning records from elsewhere, which any marketing dude will tell you is nothing more than advertising for other labels/cities. I would put the work in on this sort of site and I hope you know I'm not just blowing hot air.

Ok but even with good ref monitors mastering with that program is a headache. I started there too, but now I'll be damned if I can run it on my current systems. One's Win XP, other one is Leopard. I was going to try running a 95 emulator after I retrieve some old mods off of zip drives I haven't been able to access in ages.

But even back in the day I used Sound Forge for the normalization and final eqing and compressing.

wtf are you saying luke ? in impulse most of your sound needs top notch mastering BEFORE getting into the tracker, the whole idea of a tracker is to track for the final mastering IF necessary.

anyways, im out i have important stuff to do like porting this in the wtf section :
