I agree, I'm not so into super angry music. I could never be into a genre of of music that is mindlessly happy or mindlessly angry. but to each their own that said, there is a lot more diversity now in D&B then, say, back in 98, or so when much of it was dark techy 2 step. some great producers doing all kinds of interesting stuff - too many names for me to get into - but just take Mutt and Gremlinz from Toronto, for example. *amazing* producers, and great DJs too anyway, here's a couple great oldskool D&B tracks -> this first one always killed it when I would play it in Toronto.. classic Apollo 2 - Atlantis (I Need You) - LTJ Bukem remix - Good Looking records 1993 Metalheads - Kemistry - Synthetic hardcore Phonography - 1992 Rufige Kru - VIP Rider's Ghost - Metalheadz 1994 |

Yeh Recoil's got mad musical knowledge, him and Corey K play a big part in the scene...I have great respect for those two. Same with Nitrous and Galaksy, they we're some of the first ppl in Montreal really repping D'n'B hard, along with Mindset. I remember them being persecuted for being French and overcame THAT as [ well...ca ] forget those guys. |

thanks man!
ya Corey K is serious. my kind of DJ - plays great upfront stuff but also has crazy oldskool selection - and the REAL oldskool that hardly anyone has. not that corny ragga-hiphop jumpup junglist souljah wank that people came to associate it with. I was chattin to him on Saturday at the loft jam about obscure oldskool tracks and he's got serious knowledge. personally I would love to see him get booked to play an underground oldskool set - maybe me and him booked on the same bill! =) =) =) for real though I would love that. maybe I'll do a one-off jam and make it happen if he's down oh snap! how could I forget Nitrous and Galaksy! I knew I was forgetting key people. amazing! I've only seen Nitrous play at Under Society, when i was fresh off the boat here - great DJ PS - hated on for being French?? by who?? wack Update » recoil wrote on Thu Jan 8, 2009 @ 1:05am oh ya - I really wanna hear Bassfacial spin. haven't had the chance yet but I hear nothing but good things and on top of that he is the chillest guy.
and I have to add, for D&B production... I gotta big up my homeboy and fellow Illegal Sound crew member Sixteenarmedjack. people know him for ragga-jungle mashed-up mayhem. but the other night, Luke Peril played me this deep moody D&B track 16AJ produced years ago that is fucking incredible. and knowing Odie, he probably whipped it up in no time. that guy has serious talent |

I like the ridiculously hard shit, and I don't care how impossible it is to mix. It's like Merzbow with breaks or something. I still rather like violent slam-dance pits a lot more than colourful rave rehashes...
That said this city has a wicked drum and bass scene, the guys in KO keep it happening, as does my man Recoil, a man with a record for everyone... Mad props!

so why does violent d n b exist?
violent music is designed to let out the bad, and to take music to the extremes of creativity. instead of hiding out in ignorant bliss (not a pun) hard tunes open you to realism, to the harsh realities of this society. and that does not contradict 'happy' or 'good vibes' music (though, for me, hardcore has plenty of good vibes), it compliments it. like brother and sister. the people i know that listen to the hardest shit are often the nicest/kindest people.

The hard, violent shit is a there to mostly release what you're feeling inside, without actually going around on a killing-spree. Not everyone has/had the 'perfect' life where they were popular and loved by everyone growing up, some people got beat up for being smarter than others, got beat on by alcoholic parents, and various other things that really make it hard to be "happy" like someone who gets every video-game console they want and is loved and accepted by everyone around them.
If anything, I find that the hard, dark shit is WAY more 'realistic' than happy, uplifting music that brings a message of 'plur'; we don't live in a peacefull world, we don't live in a world where everyone deserves unconditional love, we're not united, and very few people respect anyone, let alone everyone. Happy music is about as legitimate as radio-friendly pop-music; it's just selling false hope and fake emotions to people who think the world is a perfect place.

uh.. i don't think it says the world is a perfect place..
just like you have violent music for the hard knock life.. you've got happier music for the good times.. doesn't mean being happy in life is any less of a reality than having to go through rough patches.
I'm feeling gimme crackpipe right now.. |

yeah, but I find that even when I'm happy, the hard music is a lot.. I dunno, better isn't the right word, but it's the only one that comes to mind..
I mean, not just in DnB, but listen to any 'happy' music; pop, happy hardcore, jazz, etc.. It's just such a simple formula.. It doesn't take any thinking to make happy music, and happy music doesn't feel as 'deep' to me as hard/angry music does.. I mean, can you imagine a really twisted and insanely wobbly dubstep bassline in a song about birds and sunshine? Happieness is an 'easy' emotion to make people feel; comedy movies, pictures of kittens/puppies, happy songs about love, are all so much easier to make than something that's really dark/brooding/scary..

you're both right...
but what puts a smile on my face is th groovy music, not the cheesy stuff :P you can be positive and happy without being unrealistically overjoyed, same goes for music, imo listening to zeppelin, marley, or some groovy breakbeats, trip hop or d'n'b, is all the good vibes i need ;)

I never said anyone who didn't want to get hurt had to get hurt. Slam dancing is fun for those who are into it. Get mad drunk and high, trash about to insanely complex breakbeat hardcore sometime, you'll know what I mean.

I dunno, I used to listen to a lot of angry dark shit when I was younger
Some gangsta hip hop too, Then I realized that the music did more to feed the mood I was in then alleviate it Now I try to focus on more postive music, dosen't have to be cheesy, just funky, bouncey and fun More of a pleasant vibe Update » Blisss wrote on Thu Jan 8, 2009 @ 12:50pm Incidentially, the vibe in dnb turned really negative when the music went dark in the 90. I remember all those jungle kids trying to act gangsta, standing around with a moody looks on their faces

Yeah but if I may man, you already seem to have anger and hostility problems, and some sort of persecution complex that you cover up with megalomaniacal statements. Stop being so textbook. You can use angry music for catharsis or get swept up in the roles artists play in their expressions. You've got to realize that expressions are just that, and are not representations necessarily of truth and/or basic philosophy so much as expressions of an idea, a story, or an emotional response to circumstances. Creativity would be stagnant in general if we were all forced to refrain from using profanity, shock, passion, anger, what have you... you can't just say that something is juvenile because of what it represents for you and how you relate to it.
This is why I love agressive and insane music. It's cathartic, which is important in purging negative cycles from one's life, and it's complex and intricate, which to me is a testament to the intellectual's repressed hostility in an illogical world. It's not just take speed, freak out, and get angry for nothing for me, nor is it for a lot of other people.

Yeah but if you were really into martial arts you wouldn't have this need to self-aggrandize and mock like you do. Unless you just did it so you could get the pajamas and kick random people's asses.

Maybe I'm just passing some time at home having discussions on [ rave.ca ] while I sip on my morning coffee and answer emails
Ever think about that ;)

I'd always imagined the same, I have my coffee here too... it's just that I can't understand the need to involve one's self in arguments on a daily basis. When I go looking for a fight, the rest of the day goes to shit.
