here is my one note : cables will no matter what compagny fail you depending of the treatment done to it. about 90% of the time , these small wires will break inside.

my multimeter probes failed me, my oscilloscope probe failed me, just because i rolled the cable,
(about a foot diameter roll) to sort them out. my head phones did this too until i stop twisting the cable and keeping it stress free 110% of the time.

solution, dont trash the pair, come and see me ill change the wire, give it an other 1-2-3 y depending..

Dude, i work with ton's of different headphones and not all cords are equal. Most of the sennheiser line are crap, as in small gage and they will break even if you are careful (the ones with the red and black plugs)
The at's are solid, never seen one break. Its a strait cord, so that can be good in some circumstances.

The Sony's 7506 wires are very solid but are curled like a telephone wire and are a bitch to untangle.

your 1000$ headphone wire to your 10$ headphone wire will end up cut anyways,

you think nothing ever get shaped up in there ? its metal may i remind you, a solid, wich is
in a bendable plastic.

my 200$ oscilloscope probes proved me this, and its bnc hi coper isolated cable, i used to roll em in
a foot diameter with no stress and i eventually got to the metal. okay i used it everyday, but still
i tought the stress wouldnt be enought.

everything in the end dies.

i keep my wires straight now, when i sort em away,

get them the least manipulation possible, yet again, last month my multimeter probe showed
me it was metal again. still works fine, but even straight the wire is slowly warping off the
prime roll it was made out of.

the probe never leave the desk btw.

do you know what a mutlimeter is ?

a probe of a mutlimeter is coaxial wire like headphones wire.

but in a far better quality,

my take is read it again, and google or dictionnary anything u dont understand.

^ if time got to that gear, just sitting on my desk, my take (and experience)
doom any headphone out there to its dreadfull end : cable destruction.
Update » cutterhead wrote on Tue Dec 23, 2008 @ 11:12pm

same with this , wire quality is excellent, until you roll it up like that.

I have a pair of Sony mdr 7506 and i can guaranty to you that the cord is the last thing that will break on them. Everything else around them will fall off before the wires degrades enough for someone to hear it.

Since my multimeter wont be using my headphones, Im not to worried about what it thinks.

I have a pair of Beyer dt250 that area bout 10 years old, no problem with the cable.
My sony's are about 4 years old, no audible wire damage.

Your multimeter may detect damage, but until that translates into audible signal loss, it take more than 2-3 years.

his point is that wires will ultimately last as long as you take care of them.

btw, some sennheiser models have a thicker wire, i have the hd515. it's thicker than the sony's i have. besides, the thickness of a wire = quality is a bit of an illusion depending on the pair of headphones.

personally, more important advice is which headphones not to get, like Chateau brand :P

i love those headphones! big and comfy, good for djing, and give a nice warm bassy sound for mp3ing on the run.

i also like all the other ones mentioned that ive used.

but if money is an issue, my sony mdr v150's cost me 30$, have lasted me over a year now, and are perfect size/sound combination for basic on the run walkman usage.

na i agree wires too big are such perfect conductors they will pickup airwaves, even if they
are co-axial, the ground then doesnt act like the shield its supposed to be, and aggravate the
sinal noise & noise floor.

by the way databoy i have a pair of 1971 koss with their orginial wires i have been using since
im a kid, their older than i am. more than 10y or constant usage.

i wouldnt try what i did with these speakers on a headband , with whats being on the market since
1995. and as for pro equipment, oddly enough i had sony and stanton i replaced their wires. so thanks for understanding what i meant to say.
Update » cutterhead wrote on Wed Dec 24, 2008 @ 4:25am
another thing , i repair speakers too, so if you end up to drive the headphone like a retard for hours like i love to do, chances are you will melt the cord/diaphragm/coil junction into a cold solder witch
make the distinctive crunch sound of a burn speaker,

i redo these solder so it sound match the original made (match exactly the original specification), commonly beat it to, because i material i
use and specifically doped solder.
Update » cutterhead wrote on Wed Dec 24, 2008 @ 4:27am
actually your mdr have the same wires gauge as the pioneer & stanton.

000 micro or 00 micro

Yeah, I <3 my pair. Probably should've shelled out for the v700's, but heh, I'm wikkedly satisfied. AND I'm not a DJ!

Guess I'm a Sony fanboy, I've also owned a few pairs of v300's ($60 or so, the silver version of the v150's mentioned in this thread), and they always did the trick. Do note that Sony's warranty is excellent, if you buy 'em directly from Sony (i.e. [ sonystyle.ca ] / Maison Sony), they'll exchange 'em in store, no question asked.

Yep, bought a pair of those in-ear budz too ("smoking buds", IIRC), and I was really surprised by the sound. Cat chewed 'em out though, so booo.

Just don't get those big headphones. They may look cool (though they're HUGE), but the sound is INCREDIBLY shitty.

And yeah, I've had good reviews all around on a few Sennheiser models, most notably the PX-100/200, so you might wanna go that way too!

Stantons, well... I just don't know 'em.

The reason wires break (beyond the inevitable laws of physics):

1.By walking away from the mixing board and forgetting to take off your headphones.
2.Rolling over the cord with your desk chair.
3.Closing your road case/brief case on the wire.
4.Rip the plug out of you mixing board by the wire.
5.Close a door on the wire.
6.Chew nervously on the wire.
7.Twirl your headphones by the wire.
8.Burn through it with a cigarette.
9.Strangle someone with it.
[ 10.Us ] the cord to tie the door of your van closed...

If you manage to not do the above, your cord should outlast you.

cat ate it...

no but seriously... even if you are careful, these wires and especially connectors do go through a fair amount of stress just from moving around while you mix... whether you like it or not... i mean its no big deal either... its a lil soldering job and that connector is brand spankin' new!
