The background (from what I'm guessing just looking at the name of the link; ruined iphone) is that Rogers is going to be carying the iphone in canada, but there's no unlimited internet plan.

that is pretty wack.
well i guess thats just another reason to hack one and stick a fido card in there...
does anybody know how good those htc touch screen phones that bell offers are?
i already have unlimited int0rnets with bell and i apparently get a nice big discount on a new handset this month so i can score the htc for around $200.
i stuck in my contract for another year so an iphone is outta the question.
you guys think its worth it?

I have an HTC with telus, not the touch though. Windows mobile seems pretty solid, but i dont really use the interweb since i dont have a plan for it. The wifi works pretty well, but you need to be pretty close to the router =p

I tried the Touch for a full month. I liked it. The touch screen is very responsive but not too much. The slider functionality is a bit wack though ( sliding your finger from right to left flips the screen to reveal another screen à la iPhone ).

I liked it a lot honestly. Biggest downfall is the lack of a keyboard. I use SMS extensively and using the stylus to tap the screen and enter letters gets a bit tedious.

Aside from that, I though it was worked beautifully.

As for the iPhone, I was saving up to get it but because of Rogers, I probably won't. Not only don't they have an unlimited internet package but, believe it or not, they have a way to calculate data transmission on WiFi. Meaning, when you use it at home with your router or downtown in a WiFi-enabled cafe, they'll STILL calculate it.

The plans are insanely expensive and I don't even want to know the cost per Mo when you bust the limit. Rogers is relying on the iPhone's popularity to charge insane amounts of money for it. As if Rogers was almost bankrupt.

Btw, getting an unlocked iPhone won't work because the serial number will not be recognized by the network ( Fido or Rogers ). Your phone will work to place or receive calls but your internet will be charged pay-per-use REGARDLESS of any data plan on your account.

I should know, ask No Comply : I work at Bell.

That unlock shit will work for certain GSM phones but Apple have airtight rules regarding their product.

When the iPhone is officially released by Rogers, if you purchase an unlocked iPhone, chances are you'll get this (definition # 3 ) : [ www.urbandictionary.com ]

That's the word I'm getting from people that work over there.

As for the WiFi thing, yes, it will be counted the same way they do it for Fido Uno ( read, it's interesting ) : [ www.fido.ca ]

If there is a way to hack the phone to not have WiFi counted, I'm in. Otherwise, you'll have to deal with that if you want one.

BY THE WAY, this is the word I've been giving, it MIGHT NOT BE exactly how they'll do it. In fact, I hope not, but it's not definitive. Please be aware of that with the above. Thank you.

What did you never heard of that ? The WiFi calculating thing ? It's normal, it's very recent. :)

As for being creative, Rogers will make sure your unlimited internet with them isn't compatible with the iPhone. They have ways I'm sure. They can be creative too when it comes to making packages incompatible with whatever they feel like. It's Rogers. :)

Yeah, not sure I'm following her either.

And stop calling me retarded when you aren't conveying your ideas properly. We are at least two not understanding what you are trying to explain here.

Indeed, I fail to see what PDAs and Blackberries have anything to do with an iPhone. I agree data is data but remember that the iPhone IMEIs ( serial number ) will be recognized by the network so if you try to use a Blackberry Unlimited Data package, the network will recognize your IMEI, see it's NOT a Blackberry and BOOM, pay-per-use data REGARDLESS of whatever else you are using, like, say, an iPhone.

I don't understand how they can charge or calculate and charge you for wi-fi usage if you are not using a fido or rogers hotspot.

If I am accessing someones elses router wirelessly, I don't see how they can possibly charge you, you are not using their network at all.

How is it possible or legal for them to charge me for something that uses none of their bandwidth..

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant by wi-fi calculating, so perhaps you can clarify that for me
