well, that's more the .1 than the 5.. The 5 is for spacial awareness; front/back speakers are enough to get fully imersive sound, no need for the extra. The center channel is because in most movies/tv the voice is panned to the center.
I'm feeling airconditioned bliss right now..

Exactly. But games are another matter entirely. With a very good 5.1 system, you can pinpoint EXACTLY "where", inside the virtual world, things are happening. Provided of course that this virtual world is flat-ish, coz the up/down component is completely absent.

Come to think of it, I think I'll fire counter-strike instead of taking a nap... XD

Unless "up/down" is directly above or directly below you (like if you were playing Descent) a properly set up 5.1 setup WILL let you hear if something is higher or lower.

The problem is in the setup. Your left/right front and rear speakers have to be the exact same distance from your center, and have to be pointing in the same direction. You have to form a PERFECT square. Also, depending on how close you are to your speakers, you have to angle them a little, but the most important part is that the speakers have to be in a perfect square, at the exact same height all around, or you're not getting a complete effect (the center speaker is the only one that doesn't really need to be in the exact same "perfect" alignment, because it represents a generic "center" that's usually not used for sound effects, only voice in main dialog situations or when someone speaking is directly infront of you)
