huh, lol,

when you go see a band, its not called a "live" ....

but try to make 1 hour long uk hardcore track without pre-sequencing anything.

you will have more than 200 sounds to sequence and fool around live, and to play drums, and to play all the synth, pad AT THE SAME TIME, trigger the sound fxs, play with the effects.

every tried to play drums 1 hours long non stop at 180 bpm EXACTLY on a 4/4 beat?

its impossible, dont owrry i played drums for 10 years now.
only a machine can do it

but yes there is a diference between a band and a live act, live act are whatever you do as long as you dont play "allready-made" tracks

btw reggie, are you starting this thread because i was telling you last week that i was doing a live act with my midi controller and my laptop?

i find the timing of this and the thread to be really appropriate (or inappropriate)

either way, i really dont mind, i just find it wierd.
I'm feeling hardcore right now..

I don't think guys who play guitars should call it a live show because they aren't building the guitar out of wood in front of you on the spot!

I agree with some of what was said already and will not repeat it; imho I feel that live would mean that it is not completely pre-mixed and that it can be modified on the fly and can only function and sound like it is supposed to or meant to if it is constantly being altered and induced by a or several humans...

I think the type or style of muzik being performed has little to do with the "live" aspect of the performance, in other words, an electronic act consisting of a set that has elements being manipulated on the spot to create the desired show I would consider to be "live" regardless if it is on laptops or digital/analogue machines

Perhaps a term for a pre-made set that would be considered more "live" than a mix set or pre-recorded could be a "dead" set or a "half-dead"...

Ufot-unhun, its 2k8
I'm feeling lies wif da hax!! right now..

A band performing on stage is called a show.

A producer performing his compositions with a laptop is called a live.

A show, a live, two words.

No I'm just carefully breaking down the argument of how live and how improvised and original a set should be.

Most live shows have little too no improvising in them, exept for jazz and blues. Most shows are'nt original music but interpretatons.

improvising doesnt make something live or a show.

one could argue some "live" sets dont have any improvising.

Improvisation garanties a certain level of performance but very few peoples expect, enjoy or even recognise improvisation.

which is stupid, because that's what good music is all about, being able to break through the common mold and do something on the fly, hence the term live.

so, then, a band doing a set of all their own songs exactly as they are on the album wouldn't be considered live?

Bethovens symphonys have no improvisation in them and are as live as anything. Improvisation only works on easy and repetitive structures: jazz, blues and rock.
