moondancer, back up your words and kindly send me a check for 500$ please. :)

And of course you cant compare 100% the gimp and photoshop since photoshop has tons of features aimed at professionals which the gimp lacks. But the gimp should do to anyone using it here. There are other softwares out there too.

When you buy photoshop you are not buying a brand name, but rather a kick ass application with good support, advanced features and much more.

"Expecting people not to rip your software would be like leaving 1000$ on a bench, going across the street to get a sandwich and expecting the money to still be there when you get back. Anyone would take it, it doesn't take a bad person."

I didnt say someone was a bad person, i'm just saying there are free and legal alternatives that you can use, so why not take the little effort it takes and be legit? I'm not saying you are a die hard criminal, just lazy and unscrupulous ;)

The Gimp has crappy color profile management and no CYMK support (Well, last time i checked). So no, it won't do for anyone using it here.

I'm sure there's a) some professionals on the discussion board and b) some who do it as a hobby but produce actual stuff from time to time.

note that i'm staying clear of the 'should we pay for it' debate. I'm just taking exception to calling the Gimp what it's not.

as a student I don't have much money, and I'm only learning to use those tools so I don't have the real thing.. but if I continue to work in design and become professional, I'll probably buy the software.

I do agree that others should appreciate the work youve done on it however I think you are making a mistake in expecting people to understand where you're comming from. You should know in advance that they won't. There are probably less than 1% of the world that can relate. This is just one of the challenges you face as a software company. You can't expect anyone else to care. Even if you got everyone in the world to care there will always be a bad apple to ruin it so the challenge is really on your side(well you and your companies).

Also I'd just liek to point out it is more the money that inspires people to use pirated software, not lazyness. It would usually take less time and energy to purchase something than fidn the crack or make a crack. It's also not out of the question that your software wouldn't be as popular or widespread if it weren't for crackers. To say somehting you might find a little twisted.. you should almost be flattered that crackers are cracking your software because all good software is cracked and if it's not cracked one has to wonder if it's any good.

I'm not just saying this because I don't use photshop.. I'd be telling the same thing to anyone who had written a program I use on a daily basis as much as I would appreciate it. Expecting people not to crack would be expecting everyone to be a selfless person. Forget about good or bad.. you're asking people to be selfless. There's nothing wrong with that but the point I'm trying to make is that in the end nobody really cares and 99% will take what's handed to them(often regardless of their own moral views) so the only way to improve the situation(at least as I believe) is from within the company and people who will benefit from it's success.
I'm feeling bored right now..

If I ever become a graphic designer, of course I will buy a licence.

IF.

I do appreciate the work of those that created the software I use. C'est vous qui me permettez de mettre mon seul "talent", si on veut, à l'oeuvre... ma créativité.

Without the tools, it would be useless. eh.

Why is smurf claiming Photoshop as HIS software?

i'm not claiming it as MY software. I'm claiming part of the code in it is mine, and every time they sell a copy i get royalties2. As for the student thing, there are cheaper student versions of photoshop.

Education pricing for Photoshop CS3 : 399$

Last I remember of being a student, I could barely afford Kraft Dinner, much less purchasing a 399$ piece of software when the rest of my class got it for free online.

Besides, you could certainly expect one student to purchase it full price and making copies for the rest of the class. So not much can be done about that.

But I do agree to say Adobe is rich enough as it is. Hell I had massive problems with the free edition of Adobe Reader one day and contacted them for support and I guess they figured I was using the free version so it took days for them to reply with a pre-formulated answer that helped me as much as scratching my nuts in disbelief.

That's not being kind and supportive to all users who are using your products, free or not.
I'm feeling that artwork is dope right now..

oh for fucks sake, everyone at adobe knows that non-proffessionals use their software illegally...

now seriously though, whats the difference between someone using gimp or someone using cracked photoshop to you smurf... either way you dont get a penny!

if anyone ever decides to get the educational version of photoshop, it'd be illegal to sell anything you do with it, so if ever you want to do that, you'll have to buy the full liscence... full price

I am studying to be a graphic designer, when i get out of school... I might not even need to buy any software cuz if I might get hired by a company that pays for the software you need (it happens).

so here's to not paying for software that you dont need to pay for anyways!
I'm feeling ice cold right now..
