Quebec seperating would kill the housing market causing people that bought property worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to have there estimated proper value drop to not quite worthless but at least half that value. The economy would most likely crash as Montreal especially has alot of corporations who have tax deals with both the provincial and Federal government. The healthcare system would break, medicare isn't free and Quebec is in alot of debt. The immigration policies would most likely get worse limiting the possibilities of more educated professionals. The policies for immigration and what the government recognizes are allready bad enough, when you have professional dentists, doctors medical professions we lack unable to get certified because they havn't had all there permit or worse need to take remedial french in order to get certification to work in Quebec. I don't care what language a surgeon speaks as long as they can do the job.
Anyhow we'd have to change the name of the Montreal Canadians can't have that.

I dont know enough about the effects of separation to choose a side, I just think its a somewhat pointless issue when you look at all the others things that need to be fixed====>first of all the environnement. I would also vote PQ if it was'nt for the separatist values...
One of the green party's ideas was to separate the separation issue from provincial elections so that ppl dont choose a party just of fear of a referendum, or vice-versa. I kind of think that makes sense.
I'm feeling hhc! :) right now.. |

I have to agree with what you just wrote, Morphine, but I was finding this quote a bit unrealistic:
"seems to me that if separation was the best option for quebec, people would have realized it then the pq would have won, no?" People vote in trends in Quebec. Human beings are a social animal and will tend to follow what the neighbor (i.e. the mass-media) says. And these days, the neighbor says that separatism is not cool. The neighbor says that separatism is over and that people are tired of hearing about it. So that's what people think, because that's what they're told they should think. But there is one thing that makes me optimistic: people were angry at the PQ in 2003, so they voted for Charest. Now they're angry at the Liberals and do not take Boisclair seriously. So they voted for Dumont. If we follow this logic, people will get (more than ever) pissed at an eventual ADQ government, because it will bring us back to the Duplessis-era (just replace the nuns with the private sector). It would be logical that by then, the PQ will have a new Leader with a new speech, so they should be back in power with a third referendum in 5 to 10 years. I dunno... I'm just speculating because it's the only thing that can make me positive right now. I just can't beleive what's happening to my social-democrat homeland. I grew up proud of our common values, now I'm ashamed and I want to leave more than ever.
I'm feeling politically raped right now.. |
