I don't like people censuring themselves because they might think they'll hurt my feelings. If it's constructive criticism, out with it! no?!!

Yeah but how does constructive critisicm involve telling someone that they suck? That's call discouragement even if it's mixed in with useless "advice". If I were him the only thing I'd get from this advice is discouraged from being a dj, and discouraged from asking for more advice. Constrcutive critisism would have been "well you aren't bad for a beginer, you might wanna work on your spinning a little before playing in public, welcome fellow dj, let us show you some stuff". Instead people seem to be insulted by the fact he called himself a DJ, which he definitely is considering that a DJ is someone who spins records(no matter how well they do it) and none of you have the power to decide that.

-Wtv. I can't believe some of you could waste your time on someone who's first post is:
"Hi, i spin House (miami, filtered/disco, club) and Trance (vocal, anthemy)"- Silly Robots

Okay, I reviewed the information on this page and the only advice you guys gave him was "mix". Just to make sure you all noticed. That is all. Continue.

Okay... lets just say he does take what people have said in this thread as discouragement. Don't you think DJs get some sooner or later from surrounding people that have already received their share of criticism (ups AND downs)? Worst part is... it's not like we can even spare to pamper him as he's trying to enter a very dense and way more mainstream music genre then most "rave" music. But if you beleive he can't cope with this... that's an entire other subject that, in my opinion, is an already lost battle which will inevitably prevent you from making any little breathing space within such a dense atmosphere/scene.

Now... I'm not denying the fact that he might lose a little self-esteem in all this but this is what motivation/perseverance is all about. Asking for help is not a crime. If he wishes to ignore the "useless advice" (as you so nicely put it) and wish to learn by himself... then so be it! Many people responded by saying that he should get the knowledge before hand... but you know... theirs something definetly afoot in all this: his myspace mp3 player has a few of his own productions.

"Welcome fellow dj, let us show you some stuff"..
Cmon Sofia... what's next... I'll have to tuck him into bed and sing him a lullaby?!

I'm not censuring what I think.
This is who I am.
Although I must say for the record (like if it really needed to be said) that no wrong intentions were meant on my behalf.

Take it or leave it.

true enough.. I wasn't directing my commentary specifically at you, which you prolly/hopefully know anyway... All I wanted to say is I find the critisim non-constructive and I suppose that's an opinion. He didn't claim to be anything or anyone. I dunno why anyone cares.

Murdock and Lone Star:

thank you! no im serious! your comments were some of the only real critiques i have gotten, and noone who i've showed my mix to have had the balls to tell me...

mind you, maybe they didnt have trained ears enough to hear it...

but i have to admit, i have good ears and i honestly heard there was something happening to the vibe as if im doing something to ruin it, but i just couldnt figure out what it was.

beatmatching and letting the mix breathe for longer than 6 seconds seems stupidly obvious, but it pretty much smacked me in the face and opened my eyes/ears

im not a stranger to harsh criticism and i've dealt with a lot in my life since i've been a guitarist for 9 years now. and my skill on guitar is way way way more mature and developed than my turntables...

i only got my turntables 3 months ago. and this is where im at so far.

i thank you for what i consider as help. and after a little while i'll come back and post another mix for y'all...

ciao!

For real, good advice is better than none, there are ways of putting that forward. I won't listen to it because it's house, quite honestly.
I'm sure he's gonna pick up sooner or later.

Ps: I'm a top class jerk I know, I'm working on that too. :lol

Hey BubblegumPhantom,

Practice will make perfect dude! It takes time.... Trick is, get some friends to start mixing with you man! There's nothing better to learn then to have people there with you to push you and to help you develop your technique. Alot of people don't even know where to start when they start mixing. Get the basics down then PRACTICE! Get to know your tracks, then get more (if you can afford it)... Skills are 1 thing, then it's all about track selection. Before you play out, you should be confortable with your arsenal! Also, listen to mixes by your favorite DJ's from montreal (Like Galaksy, Murdock, Host One ;) ) analyse their mixes and try and figure out why they sound good.

Anyways I'm no expert, I just love mixing with my buds...

yeah, the beats slide off (if they were ever on to begin with) and the mix begins to sound like shoes in the dryer.
