 Coolness: 153020 | yeah fishead, thats great, i used to sort them by genre/label, bouncy with bouncy, trancy with trancy, ect. its nice, but still when you are trying to find a track lets say on a b side, but the a side is not the same genre, you still have to go trough all your plates

 Coolness: 44045 | Okay, so I wore out my first needle today, I'm starting to realise this is quite an expensive enterprise!!! But, I wore it all the way down, until the pimple was completely flat,....and apparently this is horrible because the needle gets sharper before it gets duller. My poor vinyl.
The thing is, I don't exactly have the best sound system, so I didn't notice distortion of any sort...and I don't own a microscope, so how is it that everyone knows when to change their needles? Shouldn't I be able to tell in my headphones? I read something else about scratching, it said I should set my anti-skating to 0, does anyone actually do this? I also read some statistic that says you get about 200 plays out of each record and I'm suddenly scared because....noone ever showed me how to set up needles, I just read the instructions. I understand the bit about balancing the tone arm properly without the needle and then turning it so much for the weight of the needle. I usually increase and decrease the weight at the opposite end of the tonearm depending on whether the needle is picking up dust or jumping grooves. I guess I should redo it all, but is there maybe something I missed? I apologize in advance for the rather boring questions, but everyone I know likes guitars better. |

| Coolness: 75685 | dig up the Technics 1200 FAQ... because what you've described sounds nothing like properly balancing a tone-arm... if the needle is picking up dust then you need to clean your records... if it's jumping grooves then you might be able to fix that by working with the anti-skate... which controls a spring that pulls the needle towards the outside of the record (to prevent it from skipping forwards)...
If you've got your tone-arm properly balanced and are just using it for playing records (ie: not scratching/juggling/back-cueing a whole lot) then you should set the anti-skate to the same as the tracking weight... if you do this and drop the needle on a piece of untracked vinyl (ie: the smooth side of a single sided record) it will stay in the same place on the record. If the anti-skate is too high it will pull towards the outside, if it's too low it will move towards the center. |

| Coolness: 153020 | fish has it, but i just wanna add something, the weight on the needle doesn't really change anything sound wise and almost anything wear wise, its just makes it harder to jump when back spinning and cueing, in the kind of music that we play with turntables, we wont loose any quality or almost, with a lot of weight, because the tracks are compressed, so there are less gaps between sounds, compared to classical or jazz, lets say
the thing with the 200 plays per vinyl cant be said quite like this, i mean, yes its a limited number of play, because the needle wears the vinyl everytime, but it depend on the quality of the vinyl and most of it what you do with it. example if a vinyl was only good for 200 times, really, then anyone who scratches wouldn't be able to finish their routines because they can play/cue the vinyl more than 200 times in a routine. but yes, the volume of the track diminishes a tiny tiny bit every time you play it, but you will almost never hear it. my father still has vinyl he usd to listen all the time when he was young, and they still play very fine. now i gotta eat, im sure other will have thing to argue or add in this subject, and its not a boring question, its an important question for everyone who wants to mix, they have to know how to use and set their gears properly, and what is the normal wear of the vinyl, and the needle |

 Coolness: 685605 | That's really the best way to go about things. Become totally obsessed with mixing untill you're your favorite DJ. Don't settle for second place; if you're gonna be a scratch DJ, make it your goal to be better than Crazy, Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike, etc.. If you're gonna just mix, aim to be better than your "idol". The mindset that you're the best there is helps get rid of the anxiety of playing out, and makes you a hell of a lot more confident about what you're doing, so you're a lot less likely to fuck up 'cause you're nervous. |

 Coolness: 68320 | for beat matching i practiced sometimes with 45's and put them on 33 and beat matched like that,
i also beat matched the same records until i got those beat matched...I also integrated alot of diffrent musik while beat matching after i got my 2 records beat matched ( while doing it over and over until i got it) i would re-use one of them that i matched then take another of a diffrent style and beat match that one on top of the one i beat matched previously.... | Coolness: 685605 | yeah that really helps also; mix stuff you wouldn't normaly hear together, mix it at diffrent speeds (drum and bass at 33 makes for some amazing breaks)
something that also helps is acapellas; beatmatch acapellas from hiphop tracks over your tunes. It gets you used to mixing using just sparse melodies instead of beats, and that way you get better at mixing "impossible" things or songs that have atmospheric/beatless intros. |
