Well,

Everybody, and anybody, who has (or will have) taken the time to read this thread...

Today marks the extraordinary 10th-year aniversary the of Referendum; where the "ghoulish" question posed was:

"Acceptez-vous que le Québec devienne souverain, après avoir offert formellement au Canada un nouveau partenariat économique et politique, dans le cadre du projet de loi sur l'avenir du Québec et de l'entente signée le 12 juin 1995?"

The English translation was also on the ballot:

"Do you agree that Quebec should become sovereign after having made a formal offer to Canada for a new economic and political partnership within the scope of the bill respecting the future of Quebec and of the agreement signed on June 12, 1995?"

So...

Considering, that the majority of us -are say, at least 18?

How do you feel about the Federal Governmet (being the Liberal Party)?

How does the Sponsership Scandal affect your views upon the Ferdal Government (and Liberal Party) as of now, before the Gomery Report is realeased to the public?

What is your oppinion on the Sovereigntist movement at this point -considering you are now all constituent's of legal age to decide the future of this province -or perhaps, potential sovereign state?

I ask these question only because at this point and time in our Government, we, as the populace of the city Montreal (est la ville de Québec), potenially face the very same question that was proposed to our parents.

"Should I stay, or should I go?"

Now...

I don't know all the questions that need to be proposed, however, I can offer the information to those who have strong feelings about this issue.

This to me is not an article that is to be joked about -though some may find a way to do so. This, to me, is a serious issue that faces Canada as a whole. Canada, in my perspective, is a great country, but is definitely far from perfect.

If you have an oppinion regarding this issue; the issue being the separation of Québec...

I sincerely ask of you to post your oppinions regarding this issue.

My opinions are based on my perception of what would happen if Quebec seperated and given the current political climate. First of all, the economy of our province would fall apart. Yes, there is much industry and commerce in our province, but most of it is privately owned. Privately own by Canadian companies. Companies would either pull out and leave mass unemployment, or, continue operating in the new country, but with most of the revenue ending up in another country (most likely, Canada), thus damaging the new country's economy. Next, there is the rather large question of what the english population would do. Mostly found in montreal, its been suggested that Montreal seperate from Quebec, to stay with Canada. Either that, or much like the companies, they would simply leave. Without Montreal operating as the economic and financial cornerstone of a country, they'd be a little fucked. Next, there's the matter of the first nations. What do we do with the reservations that are in our province. This land is THEIRS, not ours, and they would most likely stay in Canada, since the upstart government of the new country would have little to offer them in the way of benefits the way Canada does, and as I mentioned before, strictly speaking, native territory is native, not quebec, or canada. Finally, there's the American factor. I don't know what or if they would do anything, but you can bet that if things got violent (french/english disputes might ignite in unthought of ways upon seperation), you can bet those American tanks would come rolling in. All in all, sovereignty seems nice as a concept, but a little too much to pull off in practice. IMHO, Quebec (both english and especially french) manages to maintain its "distinct" society, operating within a larger country. I mean, Canada is far from being a homogenous country... it could easily be 5 countries even... but that's not the point. The point is that Quebec seperating would cost millions and millions of tax dollars and stress the economies of both countries (Quebec and Canada) to the breaking point. Not a very good idea when you're only know on the road to economic recovery.

All the non french people would leave, then quebec would become pure french, english would no longer be taught in high school, all those educated in quebec would then only be able to speak quebecian.. the emerging workforce would therefore be so incapable of communicating with the outside world that it's economy would have no power and a depression would start.

Judging from the amount of participation... the debate really has just sort of died out... I mean.. even the Block Quebecois has stated that sovereignty isn't their main priority anymore.

if they truely want to preserve their heritage etc etc they'd be far better off spending their time doing other things than chasing such a useless dream.

It's too hard for normal people like us to predict the outcome of soemthing like this. I don't even care what happens. If we have another referendum, I ain't voting.

After the sponshorship scandal I didn't feel any different about the liberal party than before, because these thigns are so human and expected.. wrogn yes, but to be expected. I woudl think that countless politicians have gotten away with things like this, perhaps on a smaller scale. However when they decided to make themselves look better by filing a law suit against Chretien.. I think that is ridiculous. Maybe if they had filed a law suit before the scandal it would be okay, but to use someone as your scape-goat is just really immature.. especially when that person was a way better Prime Minister than you'll ever be. "Liberal" is just a word that people like the sound of. It doesn't signify freedom or morals it's just a fucking name so I wish people would look past the name cause as far as I can see they have done nothing good for us. They are whinny little suck-up bitches. They aren't doing anythign for our environment, they are sending our soldiers to Iraq (and discretely so). Chretien put his support in all the right places and money in all the right places. He actually reflects the desire for peace that Canadians have and for fucks sake, the desire to help fix the fact that our fuckign planet is burning away slowly. Paul Martin shoudl just take the blame and shut the fuck up cause everyone who's opinion I've ever heard on it, didn't think much of the sponshorship scandal. They just figure all prime-ministers steal money and one of them got caught. I don't want a stupid immature whiney piece of shit Prime Minister like him and I don't want a Prime Minister who's going to give in to the Americans so easily. I dunno who I want the Prime Minister to be, but I do know that Chretien actually had morals and he didn't give in to the American's, not unless it followed those morals. I also know there are probably others in the running besides him who can do a good job maybe even better, but Paul Martin isn't one of them. I say all their support comes with their fucking name, cause people hardly knwo anythign more than the name.. Liberal.. pfff.. liberal people don't give in to everyone and liberal people don't enslave others, let alone their own soldiers.

Hmm...

Yah, I'm a nature-freak...

C'MON CALISSE.

Private companies won't go away, as we won't go in civil war, as we won't stop learning and speaking english in school. Education is managed by the provincial, which means it's the government of Quebec itself that put English courses in class. As for the first nation, ever heard of "Le Traité des braves"? It was made during the PQ era and put a stop the war between Quebec and the first nation in the North.

trashandsuicide, I'm sorry, but all the things you said reflect ignorance. Did you ever read a plan or a real white paper about the way Quebec would become a country and would manage it?

Yeah, and the quebec government is doing a FUCKING BANG UP JOB teaching english in schools eh?

even now the majority of french speaking students have trouble speaking english, what makes you think the situation will get any better once the province becomes a country and english people are booted out cause they're ruining to the precious french culture that exists..?

starting this year or next year, english will be teached on 1st grade.

And also, if someone in Chicoutimi doesn't speak english well, it's normal! If you don't speak a language, you forget it! I had some German courses in cegep! I was able to sale something, to say how was the weather, where it hurts to the doctor.. I did not spoke it since 3 years ago when I went in Germany, now I can barely read a menu.

Quebec is actually trying to get more immigration into their province.
