For Shane: This week's new mix is 80 minutes of sweet sweet freeform goodness! There aren't too many people left around who know this, but when I first started DJing, I originally played freeform (though people were still calling it trancecore at the time). I had first got turned onto it by a random unlabeled CD somebody gave me, and then a bunch of amazing sets by Hujib (of Next Generation/Blatant Beats) in the basement of Stardust (one of the dirtiest venues in Toronto history) sealed the deal. Over the years freeform and I sort of parted ways. I still bought and played freeform tunes every now and then, but into the early-mid 2000s the genre as a whole just sort of lost its appeal. To quote a popular cliche, "they just don't make em like they used to". For every good release, there were a pile of bad ones. Not a good period. Over the past few years I've been finding myself getting back into it, as more and more quality tunes have been released. But now, here in 2010, something confuses me. See back when I started playing it, it was still being referred to as trancecore. The name change to freeform came shortly thereafter. The reasoning behind the name change was apparently to differentiate it from trance, and that name was chosen because it was supposed to be music that was "free of form", free of the constraints that were present in "happy" hardcore at the time. Harder edged music free of cheesy chipmunked female vocals. Something different. Now there's this whole thing with people referring to themselves as freeform "purists", and "purist" mixes of tracks, and certain tracks in general being referred to as "purist" freeform. This irks me. Why is this specific freeform supposed to be more "pure" than......what? The stuff other people are writing? How is it that this music, which is supposed to be "free of form", is more "pure" than this other music, which is also "free of form". If it's all freeform, how can any of it be more "pure" than the rest? That makes about as much sense as stabbing myself in the testicles over and over again with a screwdriver. Phillips head. So somebody explain this to me, cause I really don't get it. I ask you, boys and girls: Saiyan - What The F*ck Is A Purist, Anyway? "Awesome!!! I love your sets..." Thanks "heh, dave of the rave has been around for a lot longer though!" I don't know who came first and I don't think it really matters. They're different names and I think we can all get along, but thanks. "yeah, and supposedly they both look alikes." I've heard that but I haven't actually met him. With a DJ name like this you've got to expect others to have the same or something similar. I'm sure there is a DotR in the UK and Australia too. RaveDave is quite different, there shouldn't be much confusion. We play different genres too, he plays trance right? |

DAVEoftheRAVE - 4 O'Clock In The Morning (sort of but not really live at Kandie Flip) The vast majority of my sets in 2008 were at 4am. This was a great time slot because I got to close out the night and play music for the most hardcore ravers there. It was also difficult because it is hard to stay alert that late at night, caffeine was my best friend. At Kandie Flip (NC NYE 2008) I played a quintessential 4am set; energetic without being too harsh and provided some hands in the air breakdowns while not boring people to death. I was quite happy with it but unfortunately there were problems with the recording so I have recreated it in my bedroom. Enjoy. [ www.xphox.net ] 1. Orca - 4am 2. Nefti - The Rhythm of the Night 3. Human Resource - Dominator (Joey Riot & Technotrance 2005 rmx) 13. Nu Foundation - I Can Feel It (Kick mix) 14. D-Ice & Reality - Luv U More (UFO edit) Repost with Love. |

I'm not recognizing most of those names. Is this more acid house or acid techno? I'm all about the raging acid techno. |

I always bring my own needles to events now. Even still, sometimes things happen. I bounced around a lot during my set and sent the needles flying, took me a couple times to realize it was the floor that was shaking everything. Really the key is to have fun. I don't mind if a dj messes up as long as they recover well and don't get upset about it. Its all about how creative and fun their set is. At any rate I had a blast at this event and all the djs I caught at the peak times of the party did a great job. I'm shocked that there are complaints. At any rate I posted this in the music place but I was handing out some so I figured I'd post it here too. [ www.xphox.net ] |

"Holy 1992 Batman. ...these are recent releases? I dont know any of the tracks but I feel like I almost should ...talk about a weird nostalgiaish type trip. either way.. cool shit, kudos." All the tracks are from 2007 though a couple of them are remakes of old ones, like Numero Uno which was originally from 1989. Glad you liked it! a lo "is it in the mashup " Yep, certainly is. Its a mashup of charly, sweet harmony, your love and a couple others. Hardcore Breaks is the name of the genre, which is bascially the genre of 'oldschool rave' but with new production. Its really picking up pace, its being showcased on new kniteforce but there are at least 10 other labels pumping out killer tunes too. 2007 is definately an awesome time for music. |
