With over 20 releases on various labels and about as much upcoming, Subtone is truly a heavyweight producer and dj representing Montreal's scene worldwide. It is truly to have him back on the decks at forward for the first time in over a year! Truly something you do not want to miss.

Sarcastic

Founder of Montreal-based underground electronic music pantheon Level 4 Productions, this amorphous being has contributed to the subculture's cabalistic causes on many levels for the past decade as label manager, DJ, producer, promoter and music critic. His love for the chugging repetitive nature of techno, acid house and hardcore genres remains informed by an early appreciation for hip-hop, stoner rock, jazz and psychedelia of all sorts. Equally at home behind two or three decks, Sarcastic’s diversity as a DJ has allowed him to perform alongside many of his musical mentors: NYC’s Frankie Bones, Detroit ghetto-tech’s DJ Assault, Stockholm’s Thomas Krome and Slobodan, London breakbeat stars Freestylers or Deekline, or minimal techno luminaries Deadbeat or Algorithm. Meanwhile Sarcastic’s productions have ranged from minimal to maximal, garnishing rave reviews internationally. Sarcastic continues to run against the grain, eclipsing expectations and defying conventionality in the ongoing quest for communal and individual expression through sound and music.

TOLTECH is the name given to the last surviving descendant of the ancient Toltec empire that, in its heyday, spread across most of Mexico, the Yucatan and Guatemala. Much like the leaders of the Toltecs, Carlos is revered by devoted tek-heads as a deity whose youthful demeanor will be eternally preserved. Continuing the militaristic aesthetic style of his heirs, the incomparable Toltech drops merciless hard tek cuts for MTL’s Level 4 production company and Jester Records. He thrives under pressure, performing perhaps his best sets when condemned to distorted sound systems and bruised mixing consoles, cementing his stature as an underground soldier. The percussive nature of Latin American rhythms continually pervades Toltech’s productions and DJ sets, as this modern warrior acts as the sole spokesperson for a dying lineage.

Once upon a time outback in the country, a little boy named Axel was born. Raised on Depeche Mode and Guns n' Roses, this kid stumbled upon electronic music at 9 years old, and started to produce it at 11. Beginning to DJ by 15, he flew away from sleepy Trois-Pistoles to Quebec City to cut his teeth. On his way to adulthood he fell in love with two specific genres : techno and acid house. Because of the latency involved in the transfer of any information from city to country, he's still in his phase where the old school sounds are great -and they sound even better with the new technologies! Released on Techment Records for his remix of Axel Karakasis track 'Average' and on Pertin_nce for his acid house project "l.e.os", he mixes his various musical influences to create a unique techno sound that is as banging as uplifting. Axel is currently based in Montreal.

KIDSTATIK
Level 4/ Standard Records

Date of birth: 1999
Place of Birth: Telefunken Alternator Station
Origins: SF Threshold bypass: the Arkotek alternator operates at 9,613 Hertz, feeding its output into an ingenious statik frequency (SF) converter that indefinitely amplifies the measurement. Statik electricity at frequencies greater than 4.1 MHz (MegaHertz) induces electrical charges and currents that can stimulate new cell growth in tissues, nerves and muscles. The International EMF Project of the World Health Organization is currently addressing the health concerns that result from over-exposure to radio-frequency and microwave fields, extremely low frequency fields, and, as is the case here, to statik electric fields. The hope remains that, through the organization and implementation of effective treatment, rehabilitation and assisted-living programs, chronic or terminally afflicted patients, such as Kidstatik, may one day be assimilated to normal life.

In Memoriam With Love and Respect for Mike Pearson-O'Neill aka DJ Nter/The Walrus

Four years ago our friend Mike Pearson O'Neill passed away tragically. I only met Mike in 2001, but we quickly became inseparable. Though he was quite a few years younger than me I found in him a friend with whom I could share my growing interests in music and music-related events and lifestyle; together we spent many hours breaking down the musicians and DJs that we loved and the reasons why, always digging for records, listening and sharing with each other. Mike introduced me and re-introduced to many amazing albums, anything from Steely Dan's "The Royal Scam" to Manfred Mann's Earthband, DJ Rush or Too Short. He had no prejudices and could be touched by anything from an aggressive rap song to a soft-rock ballad, if it meant something to him.

We spent many hours plotting ridiculous parties, most of which would never happen, including the infamous I Hate Neon events where we had planned to smash a TV with the image of Tiga onscreen. This reminds me of one of Mike's online antics. Many of us in the electronic music community frequented a website called memf back then (montreal's electronic music forum run by Ben of Nice Productions), and mike began posting as 'Jordan Dare', claiming that he was gay, and liked really bad music, and so on, to make fun of Jordan. Well lo and behold Jordan eventually cottoned onto the whole thing, and felt a need to defend himself online. Therefore he created an account as 'the Real Jordan Dare' and made a couple of angry posts detailing his grievances and trying to clear up the fact that the 'Jordan Dare' account was not really him. When Mike read this post he did not give up but instead got an even better -and funnier, idea. Minutes later Mike had created a new, third account calling himself 'The REAL, REAL Jordan Dare' and began to accuse 'The Real Jordan Dare' of being an imposter. Eventually Mike had to face-up to Jordan and apologize in person, but damn it was funny.

Eventually Mike became a very productive member of Level 4, our little techno-music crew, practicing his DJing enough so that he began playing out at parties, and taking a keen interest in good techno music, DnB, breakbeats and hip hop. All the while his value to the team as a promoter was limitless because he possessed the type of unbridled enthusiasm and charisma that us jaded raver types just weren't capable of anymore. With the spark that Mike provided to Level 4 Productions we went on to throw Flux in 2003 and Good Vibrations in 2004, and Mike continued to help organize other events with a collective called the Coloured Co-ordinators. DJ Nter (Mike's DJ name) played at a massive new year's party we did with Kops Crew and Kirk6 (2k4, dec 31, 2003). Mike also played at Level 4's final E-cube party School in 2004, and was the very first DJ to play at the Mix Thursday weekly at Saphir, a night that Rhys Taylor and I began in April 2005 that would eventually run for three years. The last time I ever talked to Mike was on the dance floor of Saphir, on a Thursday night.

The times that Mike and I spent together, although they were incredibly fun, unpredictable and exciting, slowly became more and more difficult as it became clear that Mike was suffering from addiction to ketamine and later, cocaine and heroin. We could no longer trust Mike as he was willing to lie to friends and family alike in order to get more money to buy these drugs. Like many of his friends I faced the challenges of trying to maintain friendship and still care about Mike, even when it was clear that he no longer cared about himself or his own life. In an attempt to help him -perhaps misguided, we cut Mike off. Nobody wanted to be associated with someone whose life was clearly going downhill. I was in Ottawa when I found out the surreal news that Mike had died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heroin overdose. None of this seems relevant as, four years later, I would do anything to have him back, or just to know that he is alive somewhere on the globe.

I bring these facts to the forefront not in any attempt to tarnish Mike's memory. Many of us that knew and loved him were well aware of his problems and either did nothing to stop them or simply felt that we were unable to. I know that I did not feel I was able to change things. I bring this up, and take the time to compose this teary-eyed message, because I know there are still many in the electronic music community who indulge in drugs that are dangerous, perhaps underestimating the long-term effects of these toxins, sometimes without consideration of the future ramifications it will have for their own lives and those of the people they know and love. Sometimes, frankly, because they think that it is cool to take drugs. Mike's death made us think a lot about the choices we had made in our lives, and it made it very difficult to continue to promote electronic music events, because there is often an assumption that electronic music and hard drugs go hand in hand, and the last thing I have wanted to do since Mike's death was to encourage more people to take this dark and fatal path. Of course, communicating with others in any way, via music, words, or symbols, is always healthy, and that's why I'm writing this now. It is important to remember those that came before us and to respect, remember and re-tell their stories. I see many happy, young, beautiful and intelligent people here in Montreal, and I don't want them to make the same choices and pay the same cost.

SNORK: The musical voyage of Dominic Martin alias Snork started in the early nineties when he was 13 years old. At that time he started experiencing trumpet and drum in various rock bands. At the beginning of the year 2000, Dominic made a major change in his musical orientation by going into electronic music. Snork is the nickname he adopted for his producing projects, and the pseudonym Kataleptic for his performances as a DJ. He has made many public appearances in ambient, IDM and hardcore.

He quit djing in 2001 to work on his snork projet to eventually perform his compositions live. He has been concentrating in different musical spectrums that range from techno to break to minimal ETC. The Montreal public has seen him perform at various events such as Piknic Electronik, Soma and FFW. His first EP Coccinelle was released on the label Pertin-nce and his first album, Bedroom Works, varying from downtempo to experimental is available on iTunes as of March 2009.

During the summer of 2009 Snork joined the collective Noerg, and continues to produce new varieties of techno and down tempo with touches of break and IDM.

visit Snork's Noerg page here : [ noerg.com ]

DIALECT: Straight out of the northern lands of Deux-Montagnes...
Initially influenced by hip hop acts such as KRS One, Native Tongues, Gangstarr, Jeru the Damaja., He began to pursue a Hip Hop scratch dj status in 97. With the newer generation of "Shit-Hop" emerging from numerous Hip Hop labels, he became frustrated, fed up, and discontinued purchasing Hip Hop vinyls altogether.

Still producing Hip Hop instrumentals, and working with local MC's, Dave Dialect was still unsatisfied with the current "scene" until his first visit to the afterhours. An easy convert to the Break Beat sound, Dialect blends the precision skills of turntablism with an ear for the underground electronic music community. Dialect can be heard spinnin' "Erectro, Real Skool Breaks, Dirty Disco, Drug-Step, Bassline Whore-House, Fist Funk" and more.

Though steeped in hard techno, with the advent of digital technology Destro's DJ sets have been given over to exploring the more minimal sounds of the present and future.

Snork (ARTIST INFO) [ www.myspace.com ]
The man behind the electronic music composer and performer known as SNORK, Dominic Martin, began his musical journey at an early age. He first started playing the trumpet at the age of 13, only keeping him satisfied for about 4 years, by 16, he was now also playing the drums for local bands. In the year 2000, Snork dived into electronic music composition (production) in a really interesting way. He performed numerous live laptop dj sets under the alias Kataleptic, while simultaneously working on his own music(creations/productions), which at the time were mostly downtempo, ambient and IDM. For over 2 years now, Snork has been performing live laptop sets at a variety of Montreal electronic music events. Snorks sound draws inspiration from a number of musical influences. It can be easily described as Minimal, whatever the type of tempo or format of song; whether it be techno, breakbeat, drum & bass, downtempo or experimental.

Founder of Montreal-based underground electronic music pantheon Level 4 Productions this amorphous being has contributed to the subculture's cabalistic causes on many levels since 1993 as DJ, music critic, producer, promoter and label manager. His love for the chugging repetitive nature of techno, acid house and hardcore genres remains informed by an early appreciation for hip-hop, stoner rock, jazz and psychedelia of all sorts. Equally at home behind two or three decks Sarcastic’s diversity as a DJ has allowed him to perform alongside many of his musical mentors: NYC’s Frankie Bones, Detroit ghetto-tech don DJ Assault, Stockholm’s Thomas Krome and Slobodan, London breakbeat stars Freestylers or Deekline, or minimal techno luminaries Deadbeat or Algorithm. Meanwhile Sarcastic’s productions have ranged from minimal to maximal, exploring the outer edges of the electronic music world with the gut-wrenching rave tale Keep Poppin Pills, the emotive Sunshine Blues EP for Pertin-nce, or dark, semi-listenable tracks like Heroin is a Bad Trip. Sarcastic continues to go against the grain, throwing a split fingered fastball at the institutions of authority, knowledge and convention in the ongoing quest for communal and individual expression through sound and music.

Tomorrow night I have the huge honour of opening for DJ Bliss at his b-day jam at Koi bar's bassdrive weekly. The night will give each of us an opportunity to play some of the dubstep and dub-influenced music that we love and to drop some old faves and assorted bass-heavy jams. In addition to being a warm-spirited bundle of ever-giving joy, Bliss was also named as Montreal's Top DJ in a controversial column i wrote in 2005 due to his expertise in track selection, knowledge and respect for music and technical aptitude. His uncompromising approach to his art keeps him at the top of his game as we approach the terminal months of 2009.

UNSOLVED MYSTERIES: The Legend of KIRK6

Buoyed by the huge success of their infamous Cloud parties, and known also through their Winter Wax night Thursdays at Club Saphir, the numinous Kirk6 collective have spawned a dedicated cult following here over the last few years. I nailed down three members of the elusive gang, Nick, Kevin and Ira, in an attempt to unravel some mysteries.

Hour What do the letters and numbers in KIRK6 stand for?
Kevin Keep It Real Kids.
Hour What does the “6” mean?
Nick That’s because we’re all little devils and we like to party.
Kevin It’s been our magical number from the start, its part of a numerology. In fact, a lot our parties had references to the number six somehow.
Ira Often dates or addresses,
Nick The colors of our underwear…
Kevin The lamppost in front of my old house had a six on it.
Ira The address of this girl I had a crush on was 666, but I came along after the name was already there anyways. So it’s just weird.
Hour When they threw the first one you weren’t a part of Kirk6 yet?
Ira Cloud1 was actually my first rave ever.
Hour What happened?
Nick We gave him these pills and he was hooked right away! Two months later he was throwing money at us.
Hour Honestly, is there a reason behind the “6”?
Nick It’s because we are the sixth chapter in the Kirk system.
Kevin We don’t know where the other ones are.
Nick We’re pretty sure there’s one in Ibiza. New York, definitely,
Kevin London,
Nick We’re the sixth that’s for sure.
Ira Here in Montreal Kirk6 is a massive network of friends and family working together.
Kevin I heard they’re might’ve been a chapter in Goa.
Nick Some people say Kirk1 was in Goa!
Nick Someone told me kirk3005 was in Trois-Rivieres…that’s definitely a rumour!
Ira I have trouble believing there are 3005 chapters.
Nick Apparently they throw a series of parties called Fog.
Ira Anything’s possible in this world.
Nick The limit is the sky!

Hour What is the motive behind the Cloud parties?
Nick There’s a whole bunch of reasons which Kevin will explain, starting with number one:
Kevin um… what?
Nick We’ll move onto number two. The second reason, we’ve been told by the powers that be, is because, you know, did you ever look up at the sky and see a cloud, and start picturing all sorts of animals…
Ira You escape into another world. All your cares seem to drift away when you’re looking at huge white masses in the sky, which are actually quite small in relation to the rest of the universe. Kevin, do you want to tell them reason number three
Kevin We all played a lot of video games.

Hour How do you operate!? Didn’t anyone think that people would have questions for you after three years!?
Nick Man, you’re on some future shit. Fact is, we never got an affirmative or negative from these guys about what we were supposed to say to the media.
Kevin Did they contact you for the interview… did they set this up?
Nick One thing that’s important to establish is that Kirk6 is an anti-ego organization. It’s crucial, considering that we have to work with all the other chapters.
Ira We just have to put our faith in the messages we get. Sometimes they’re very vague: go here, buy this.
Kevin We get a lot of weird info and we rarely meet with them, so you really have to believe in the cause. We know we’re doing a good thing.

Cloud5 w/ DJ’s Neerav, Tao-Nhan, Iznogood, Rob Brown, baby dino, Caitlin, Mindset, Corey K, Melon, Rockit, Mini and more. Saturday, March 23rd. $20/$25 in advance at DNA Records (28 Pine E.) Info: 514.720.6490.
