We're in 2011.. and gay people can't give blood in Canada... this law exist since 1983. If 2 guyz have slept together ( after 1977, so that means a lot of PEOPLE ) , they can't give blood cuz they have high risk to share VIH..( as if all the gays have VIH !! ) A lot of people need blood and during this time, friends around you like Matricks and his boyfriend Alex, who has been together since a while can't help people cuz they are gay!. Please if you have a second , sign this petition!

| :) Merci à tout ceux qui ont partagés le lien, je pense que c'est tous ensemble qu'on peut faire une différence. Le fils d'une amie à moi avait un besoin urgent de transfusion de 0 négatif, ce qu'ils n'avaient pas en stock. Sa propre mère ayant déja recue une transfusion sanguine ne pouvait pas lui en donner , en effet ceux qui ont déjà reçus une transfusion n'ont pas le droit et ce même s'ils sont en pleine santé. Une femme venant d'accoucher ce jour la a gentiment accepté de donner du sang à son fils.. sinon...je n'ose même pas imaginer. Alors pendant que des petits garçons luttent pour leur vie, des gens en pleine santé ne peuvent pas non plus sauver des vies à cause de leur choix personnel au lit? Ca me met complètement hors de moi et c'est ce qui m'a pousser à partir le thread ici. On peut pas changer le monde, mais p-ê un petit pas à la fois !! |

| I might actually agree with this, but only if it wasn't just a "ZOMG LOOK INJUSTICE IN THE WORLD!" knee-jerk freak-out that the whole campaign is hinging on.
What they should do is maybe change the wording of the questionaire to not outright ask "are you gay", but "have you had anal sex within the past year", because THAT'S the reason they don't want gay men giving blood; not that they're gay, but that anal sex between two men is THE #1 cause of AIDS/HIV spreading in North America, followed by Heterosexual sex, and injecting drugs comes in at 3rd place.
HIV can show up in blood tests as early as 2 weeks after infection, but it USUALLY only gets detected after 4-9 months.
The whole thing has absolutely NOTHING to do with them being gay, and entirely to do with the fact that one of the most common/widespread forms of sex that's had between two gay men is anal.
I would absolutely support a change in the wording, from 'men who have sex with other men' to 'persons who have participated in any form of anal sex within the past year', but to just overlook that one important FACT about the #1 method of infection/transmission of an EXTREMELY deadly, currently-incurable disease that can take up to 3/4 of a year to show up on blood tests, that's just irresponsible and stupid. |
