A majority of cyclists wear headphones, don't respect stop signs and red lights, go against traffic , cut in diagonal across street corners and generally don't give a rat's ass about street laws and yet they request to be treated as equally as cars on the streets.

here's my observations of the many kilometers of city bike riding I did, people doing dangerous things quite seldomly are aware of it. unless some freak accident happen, where both hydraulics and the cable suddenly got cut off or a direction pin fell off, and the vehicle were literally out-of-control, horns are just to annoy drivers that drive safer/slower.

what will likely happen is car drivers assume all other road users are in cars (or something bigger) and will give only sufficient attention to see if his/her upcoming maneuver would collide with another car then proceed and in the fraction of a second it took to finally realize, that something *completely* out of this world happened, that someone was on the road in/on something less visible than a car, then will proceed to an emergency break or swerve and hopefully the car driver lack of consideration for smaller vehicles won't cause an accident ; never having touched his/her horn nor the car sounding threatening before the emergency maneuver (which the cyclist have *no* chance against, so it's all in the hand of the car driver). of course the car driver fear is from making such mistake or his/her insurance premium rising but the other vehicle fear is for his/her life.

if the cyclist won't hear a thing before it's too late, what's the use of hearing? there was a single time where I heard a threat while bike riding, once. and meanwhile, car drivers can blast music in their partially sound-proof vehicles. that sure make sense...

I hope this thread get back on topic at some point.

^^^ That's the most ridiculous post ever.

You're saying that since cars don't honk when they should (!?) it's useless to be aware of your surroundings? For a guy that rides a bike everywhere, I think that's quite the stoopid point of view.

"I may not hear it in time, so let's not care and make shure I don't hear it at all."

Well, honestly, I've biked with headphones on .. 'cause I have eyes! And I made sure the volume wasn't too high (I made sure I was high though :p )

I mean, yeah it's a little dangerous, but when riding a bike in the city, you're not supposed to be oblivious of your surroundings anyway, and you can stay focused while using your eyeballs.

Cars do have horns for a reason, and they're supposed to be a warning, not a 'fuck you!' when some asshole j-walks while you're driving by ...

Anyway, kids: don't ever ride a bike in the wrong direction, don't wear big fat headphones with the tunes cranked way up, and fucking pay attention. And car drivers: Just fucking pay attention! I'm trying to get somewhere by pedaling on a 2 wheels and a little piece of shit metal frame, ya' dick! :p

The point is, people should warn other people of possible danger on the road in whatever way possible instead of yelling and honking at the retard after the fact ... everyone makes mistakes, no matter how vigilant they are.

Indeed. For the rare occasions I had to use my horn to warn a cyclist about something or just because they were swerving uncontrollably left and right on a single lane street, I was served to a mouthful of "fuck yous" and middle fingers and in one particular instance a Coke can thrown in my direction...

... so whatever I use my horn for around cyclists, I'm automatically the bad guy and the asshole that's just bothering an otherwise peaceful cyclist's ride home even if the honk wasn't even directed at them. So hence I've stopped using horns around them altogether.

So I'll start using it around them when they grow the fuck up and understand it's not being used just to startle them or just to fuck around.

I never wore sound-proof earbuds/headphones and I prefer a long boring ride than a fun one that could end me in the hospital, if there were ever a second time I'd be warned of a threat (and I think a decade will pass before that happen).

I don't mind you qualifying strongly my topics contributions left & right but I wonder how you'd react should I do the same to yours.

You do realize cars are partially sound-proof and that what car passengers hear is quite muffled from what others, not having the luxury of being in a cabin, hear?

I do understand when someone not used to a cyclist does a little 'beep' by tapping their steering wheel but when you press the whole thing making a 'WAAANH', it's the same as if you'd get out of your car and screamed at them ; if I also hear rubber screeching or people exclaiming about a real threat then I understand but if it's just to do the same as "YOU'RE 10 KMPH BELOW THE LIMIT!" then I understand people inactivating you for disturbing their peace.

Well, that's pretty lame ... and I know, cyclists are assholes too -- even though you did the right thing, you got shit for it, and that sucks.

Some people just don't know how to travel respectfully. Even pedestrians, when they walk 3 people side-by-side, super slowly - it's irritating!

I hit a bike once, 'cause some chick was walking her bike across the street on Ontario (a super busy street) and she wasn't paying attention, the light was still yellow for me and it was too late to break, so obviously I was coming in fast. So, I slammed into her bike with mine, and she gave ME shit!! Fuck I was pissed. I was even being apologetic despite the fact that it was clearly her fault. People can be very stupid, and never want to take the blame, in the face of strangers, that they were the reason for any accident or near-accidents.

meh. That's why I do my best to avoid big streets, and even bike-paths to a certain extent. Alot of dicks just don't know how to drive, whether it's their car, bike, or feet.

Communication, and vigilance are obviously very important when commuting. But, common sense seems to be a rare thing these days ...

For the bike riding, it's not even just the horns, but hearing the car's motors and the noise they make in general. One of the major issues with electric vehicles is that they're TOO silent, and it's happened that a person on a bike freaked out and lost control of his bike because an electric car drove next to him, didn't make any noise, and he just saw it at the side of his vision and panicked.. Deaf people also have a problem with electric cars, they don't know when it's safe to cross a street if there's a car coming, etc..

Your hearing is really a whole other sense that you NEED if you're doing anything like riding a bike, skating, etc.., not just for the horns, but for spacial awareness.. you don't need to SEE a car that's 5 feet behind you and to your left to hear and be able to judge the distance based on the sound of the engine.

I'm new to biking. I've been biking a lot this month. Couple of questions...

I see these scooters, or electric bike(?) on the bike paths. Are they allowed? My friend tells me they're electric bikes but to me they looked like super silent scooters.

Yesterday I took a cab which also took my bike. He charged me an extra 5$ for the bike. Is this common? I didn't mind paying at all since I was summer drunk. The last time I bike drunk, I hit a stationary car, and I just got on my bike going slowly...

----------

Also, as a biker, I find pedestrians more dangerous than cars. They don't realized the bike paths are roads for bikes, and we're coming fast. I use my hearing a lot too, to know what's behind me. Every ninjas should know that. It's like basic training.

The only area I can think of using headphones is in a secluded forested mountain bike paths outside of Montreal.

There are electric scooters and motorbikes, the prices, sizes and maximal speed are proportional. An electric scooter is worth 8 grands, you most likely see electric bikes that will cost under 2 grands.

It it in the taxi regulations ; it's understandable if a gas guzzling mini-van come only 1 person that will likely do a short trip (longer trip when there's more people on board).

I don't agree but it may be because I'm used to ride playing music loudly (not too much so I can hear an emergency).

Agreed, but if a car is coming in the opposite direction, you can see it -- and if a car is behind you, I've noticed that, 'cause of wind and the fact that ears are more receptive to sounds ahead of us, you don't really hear the cars that are behind you until they're pretty close anyway ...

I agree, however, being on the in-city bike path is not a free for all. There are laws that state that well, pedestrians have a right of way, unless there's a red light or a stop sign. So bikers going 55KM/h on the bike path and bitching and moaning cuz peeps are crossing the street/path are morons. They're going faster than cars.

I should be more specific. The hazardous people are the ones waiting for their green light to cross (north-south). Except they wait on the bike path itself. Not the sidewalk, not the path/road divider, but the bike path... where the bikers aren't slowing down 'cause the light is green for them (east-west).

Ok a couple of things to clarify :

- I'm always close to get knocked out because some stupid cunt is parked in the middle of the bike path or opens his door because he's too distracted to see I'm coming. How many times I have to yell because cars can't even respect THE ONLY road that is reserved to us?

- Human ears as a 5000 hz resonance peak when hearing a sound from behind. Cars do have frequencies in that spectrum so yes you can hear them coming from behind.

- Nobody thought of using earbuds ONLY in the right ear so you can hear cars coming to your left(as they're supposed to)? NOBODY?!?!??!?!?!?
