my parents and older sisters emigrated to Canada in 1971. Just because we speak the language, we're not Anglo-Saxon or British and had nothing to do with any Anglo-French beef.

Celtic peoples had their native language outlawed and were forced to speak English, so it's ridiculous to say that they represent some oppressive status quo.

read a Vietnamese account of their experience with French rule: they recall it as a time when they were attacked, oppressed and exploited by the French empire.

...an expansionary French Second Empire, anxious to match the imperial adventures of Britain and other European countries, attacked Vietnam in 1846 using the Nguyen regime’s antipathy towards Christians as a pretext. By the 1880’s they had secured the entire Indochina peninsula, and began to exploit its rich resources.

Oppression and exploitation

Although the expressed purpose of the conquest was to bring liberty to ‘the races and peoples still enslaved by ignorance and despotism’, the outcome was seventy years of oppression and near-slavery for the Vietnamese. The Nguyen dynasty rulers continued as puppets, all rights were removed, and any dissent was ruthlessly crushed. The predominant interest of the French in Vietnam was profit – virtually no attempt was made to better the lot of its people.

sounds very similar to what the British empire was doing.

Just as they won over the Spanish in 1588, with the disastrous defeat of their Armada.

well, they did indeed. To say they never really surrendered... it's a very romantic notion, but it's not reality. That would imply that since the treaty, there's a die-hard guerrilla resistance that never accepted British rule. That's definitely the case in Ireland, but certainly not here.

I know, it's just the same with French :)

I have no idea about whether the French were nicer than the English to the Natives, but the conquest was all French before it was English... for over 200 years, this was Nouvelle France, a huge stripe including Quebec, Acadie, and going down to Louisiane. This is why I was saying that the English "invaded" French territory back then (and the French invaded Native territory before that)

I never said the French were nice and didn't make war... we've had more than our share of colonies all over the world, not necessarily obtained and managed in a nicer way than English ones.

I'm very romantic :) Seriously, just see how French culture has survived for almost 300 years after the "defeat" against the English: this is not surrender to me. Of course it's not bloody guerilla like in Ireland either (thankfully!).

can't generalize by those extreme examples... but clearly this war is not only something that happened 200 years ago. and it's a bloody shame it's still going on, even just joking around.

Well technically everyone in Quebec is Canadian, unless there's some secret passeport I dont know about ;) You couldn't send anyone back to France anyway, the French were the ones who sold out Quebec and gave it to the English. Probably one of the worst sell outs in history O_o, no wonder Quebecers hate the French

Anyways all that is ancient history...most people don't live in the 1800s anymore, unless you're some kind of retard

Besides Canada today is made up of so many different people that I would reakon that maybe 1% of the population is French (maybe more because I must admit I am meeting more people from France lately), maybe 2% English (maybe more, I dunno how many Brits have emigrated over lately). Definitely not a huge number.

One thing you could do is round up all the French and all the Brits that are causing trouble and send them to Guantanamo, that could be a solution to whatever problems those guys are creating.

lol ok. You do realize that english is actually a language made out of languages from everywhere around the world right? The way we mix french, greek, italian, spanish and latin into our language to come out with the one that is known around the world is ridiculous.

Actually english is a very simple language.
So simple in fact that lots of conceptual words are not even accounted for. Hence the use of words from other languages mixed in to give it more use.
