goadraulix hehe :)
isn't it the quality of a good dj to be versatile? proof of maturity or something along those lines...
i think the crowd is more open-minded than you may think it is... keep the same goodvibe attitude, you know, you could probably venture into the unknown, people would trust your sense of music and vibe.
try your hand at whatever, house music, dubstep, electro, goa... in the end it can only make you grow as a dj, stepping out of your confort zone. the world is big, try everything once ;)
I'm feeling dendrophilia right now..

i recently contracted tinnitus, my days as a dj are numbered :'(

and honestly I totally agree with you, and I have to say that it's not the music that prevents me from playing it, it's the production quality, I can't be turning the volume up and down every track...
I'm feeling psyfun right now..

that sucks.. I've got a bit of tinnitus, but also from something I had when I was 13, long-term complications are 87 chance of renal failure, hearing loss or deafness.. not something I'm eager to run into..

And, the gain knobs on the mixer are there for a reason :P
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

anne: meh... kick drums are bad for my health, lol, tinnitus isn't only ringing in one's ears... it's also head aches, occasional nausea and dizziness, for life. i'm in the process of deciding whether or not I'm willing to let it get worse...

screwhead: gain knobs are ok, but we, DJs, don't hear what the crowd hears, fractions of a rotation make huge differences on huge systems. i've seen too many faces go from :D to 0_o to know that 'trying' to level the gain isn't enough...

We have headphones, that can isolate things better.. we can compare the current and next track ourselves and also by looking at the levels on the mixer..

call me a psy snob, but it's not that simple in psy... production quality has changed drastically over the last 8 years, even over the last 4 years...
not to mention artists' various levels of mastering and headroom... I can see how in other styles, the little blinking lights are enough... but in psy, old tracks don't have enough power to be turned up and sound even remotely comparable
I'm feeling psyfun right now..

Sorry if I have trouble believing that 15-20 years down the road that the quality of a certain genre of electronic music has sunk to a level beneath that of a bedroom producer.

**never cared about derailing on [ rave.ca ] sorry**

some say the quality of sound was superior when the music was on dat tapes.
and lots was analog, i think the sounds were more complete, more vibrant

vs

I hear an amazing difference in production quality, it's insane how much better every single element sounds in the second track.
I'm not saying one song is inherently better than the other, just talking straight up non-musical sound quality/production level

hmmm better/worse can be debatable.
like saying a modern table is better than an antique.
they are just different.
i find that goa is more like gliding, and psy is something else...

but true they don't mix, it's way too drastic of a change :P

you heard of the new stuff that's being produced, they call it new-school goa, stuff like this...
what is different in the production? would it work into mixing it with older goa?

yeah that would work... the dancers would notice a difference but stylistically the transition would be ok...
I'd argue two things here though... first it's really hard to tell on youtube since they rape the sound quality to begin with and second, if the mastering is done proper, the antares track will probably sound much louder than any old astral projection track...

you may be right though that it has more to do with style than production quality in some cases... although let's look at another example

vs

and oh! one of the more recent astral tracks REALLY demonstrates a huge leap in production quality

doesn't get much clearer than that

Astral Projection - Ambient Galaxy (Disco Valley Mix)
Astral Projection - Liquid Sun

... Older stuffs... what I grew up with, though. Nostalgic factor and all that... besides, as far as I've been able to find out of them, they really haven't been making anything notable since.

Mickos...

If you know what I mean.
I'm feeling the farce right now..

Actually, I have the same problem with Hardcore, the prod quality shifts drastically from one era to another, even within plates from the same era. On top of that, I switch regularly from Records to CDs, so there's some differences there too. On top of that, some of the CDs are burned mp3s, some are the original albums, so again, big differences in volume and quality.

My point is, gain + EQ + volume + beat-matching = adjustments. I guess it's a vibe killer to switch tracks and create volume/quality fluctuations, but you can transition creatively (like, before going from that 2011 track to that 1998 track, throw something from 2005 in between), or adjust ahead of time, or use the time that the 2 tunes are beat-matched to move the sound difference smoothly into the right direction.

It ain't easy, but quality-juggling should be in your Dj-bag-of-technical-tricks ;)

-- btw, i'm saying that you're right Mike, but that there are ways around the problem, 'cause some tunes, no matter how old, or less 'punchy', they are, deserve to be played =)

I agree that there are generally ways you can get 'that' track into your set, with proper transitions from other tracks as you say, but then again, if you have 15 tracks and only time to play 12, it's a lot easier to just cut out the three most troublesome...
it's like tracks that change BPMs or fuck with their BAR arrangement... either you need to know the track in great amount of detail... or play a track that doesn't make you sweat as much...
my solution in the past has been to play those tracks first or last, so you don't get the mid-set weirdness.
