What really blows me away about all this is how people seem to just not grasp the concept that hockey is a dangerous sport.

It's fucking HOCKEY, not Disney On Ice!

They're covered in pads, wear hardcore helmets, and skate on average between 32 and 48 kilometers per hour on a surface that offers a minuscule amount of friction.. Checking and fighting is a regular and accepted part of the game.

Whether it's intentional or not, players getting hurt is a part of the game, and if it was a player from another team that got nailed by a Canadiens player EVERYONE would be cheering him on and big-upping him for KOing another team's player. They might feel bad for the player with the busted C4 vertebra, but a few days later they wouldn't even remember.
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

yes but as of late the talented players seem to be targeted and are getting their careers put in jeopardy.

honestly, as much as I like the violence, I much prefer the talent and if I had to choose between the two... I'd vote for the elimination of the violence. Olympic hockey is actually really fun to watch because they have strict rules against violence, which allows good players to skate faster and actually play hockey instead of worrying about their health and totally holding back.
I'm feeling psyfun right now..

If the rules where enforced they way they should be, hockey would be a lot less violent. The NHL has been slowly turning hockey into a bloodsport, because violence is there main marketing tool for the U.S. market.

The NHL is slowly Slapshotting their organization... one cerebral commotion at a time.

Seriously though, the sport of football is about stopping the guy with the ball by running at him and ramming him hard enough to make him fall down or loose the ball...

... and yet, I see twice as many injuries ( and more severe ones at that ) in hockey, a sport where you're supposed to use sticks to steal the puck from the puck holder and not about speed skating and checking a guy that doesn't even have the puck to begin with.

Sure, tempers ARE going to flare, it's a sport with opposing teams after all, but sending a guy you sort of have a grudge against flying in the stands is not what the sport is about, last I checked...
I'm feeling [__insert emotion here__] right now..

I actually agree witch screwhead, that players getting hurt is just part of the game in the rules as currently played. Its a game with high intensity, where collisions can be dangerous. If you remove that you get the allstar game which is boring as fuck. But what pisses me off about the way the NHL reacted to this is that its an AT THE MARGIN decision. Rather than make the game safer for the players by cracking down on ALL headshots (safety) to reduce a little bit of intensity (players will have to let up in some situations), they've essentialy said making the game more intense is more important than safety.

From the same perspective, what bugs me about this is that

1)the NHL basicly said, Chara bears no responsibility even though it was interference. Honestly, what was Mac Pac supposed to do? Not skate hard? Should he even have to protect himself against a play like that? Obviously not. I'm not a canadiens fan. But I think Chara should have got suspended for the season because he committed an infraction, and in doing so put another player in the hospital.

2) the NHL doesnt view this as a head shot even though chara clearly guided his head into the turnbuckle. What did he think was going to happen? That the bench woudl continue forever? He knew he was at the bench. Thus he knew where the turnbuckle was.

Wake up NHL. Wake up.
I'm feeling a overhang right now..
