back on track folks...

I started going to raves in 1994 and the scene was totally different back then, I was 15, and up and until my first rave, I'd only just started listenning to industrial(NIN), I'd never heard techno or acid hourse etc. The first rave just blew me right out of the fucking water, I instantly fell totally in love with the music, the people, the fashion, the atmosphere, the lazers... what can I say, I'd never experienced anything like that before in my life, the closest thing would be a school dance or concert which are completely different...

But everything was so different back then, no interwebz or sites(other than a couple of bbs) so everyone relied on word of mouth and info lines and a hand full of stores with flyers. Being a raver back then meant you were rolling with an alternative crowd, you were part of something special, something at the time a lot of people didn't even know existed or just really didn't understand(in some ways, this can still be said).

IMO, I think when you are in your early to mid-teens, association with a cultural movement is a healthy and pretty natural part of your evolution as a person. Identifying with one movement or another allows you to adapt your values and goals etc, almost helps define your personality.

So ya, me personally, after my first party, I was hooked, a lifer if you will and 16years later, I have nothing but awesome memories, no regrets and some of the best friends I could have ever hoped for :)

Ufot-rave on people!
I'm feeling happy as a panda with car troubl right now..

Cuz you dont need deco or a nice venue to have an epic rave
jeeez. Rave snob? Or reformed clubber?

Before going to my first rave I listend to electronic music since i was 9. Having a brother 6 years older then you will do that, so would living with that brother and his 4 friends and gf. The gf is now my sister.
My sister who took me to my first rave thank you

ok fair enuff.. you started in 1998. I'm just saying.. a lot of legendary raves happened in Toronto in the early 90s that were before your time. and what was goin on in Toronto in 1994 was wayyy different than 1998 - like apples and oranges...

I only went to my first rave in late 93 so I missed out on a lot em too - incl. the CN Tower one

and no - I am absolutely not some "rave snob" or "reformed clubber" (whatever that is lol - I hate big clubs - I've never been to the Government or the Docks in my life). you just said 90s raves had no deco or good venues and I know that's not true

I really dont care about deco.. what I do care about is DJing with fun unpretentious people who arent primadonna douchebag slimeballs - and next most important thing is that they play good underground music and try not to play too much HHC - lol. but that's it that's all

I went to a lot of grimey raves too back in the day.. the one in Hamilton with Speedy J for instance. no deco at all I dont think... just a big dirty warehouse and a bunch of ravers and Speedy J doing a live PA - vibe was off the hook

so ya - please don't misunderstand.. I love little grimey jams with close friends and a generator - the Pink:sox jam under Bathurst Street bridge was off the hook. and Epic Coalition was crazy but I missed it.

I'm just sayin some promoters back in the day put an awful lot of work and creativity into scouting crazy locations and deco. to this day I still dont know how they convinced them to let them do a techno and jungle rave in the top of the CN Tower - lol! that would *never* happen now

I didnt mean they all had no deco and good venues, it was the last thing i typed online before bed so i was trying to make it quick and my brain was already in sleep mode.
What I was trying to emphasize is, its nt about the drugs, the venue, the deco, all that really matter is good sound quality and good talent and good friends.
I never went to any toronto parties unfortunately till 02, so I wouldnt know though I had heard stories, but they reminded me alot of shtuff I went to. I do agree with alot that you say though, dont get me wrong.
My first toroto party that i can remeber was nasty as shit but i had fun, and i travelled from brampton a week after moving there, knowing no one. It was across the street in an alley way form turbo i think? reform did some parties there.....
I remember as a kid not going to any parties except for at march break, xmas breaks and summer because thats when i lived with my brother. and thats when my sister could take me to a party...
I never had internet my brother did and i would go on xvi and scout out parties not knowing who any of the djs were, I didnt know dj names. Just knew sounds from being given mixed tapes from my roomies.
We didnt do drugs, we would just drink wine coolers in the car before going in...lol

The cheaper the party the better since we were using alot of our little money on gas so alot of nthe shtuff i was exposed to whe i was a lil tweeny was those dirty ass in the middle of no where generator parties, or in a abandoned church.. or xvi bbq's hahaha *shutters*

At the end of the day Im , and I dont think anyone really buy a ticket to a party or pays cover at the door for the deco. How do you even know what it looks like? If the crowd is right you dont need deco to help bring the vibe. Its just there

Theres less of this I see, but I do try my best in toronto to go out to those that give me the impression it may have that oldschool feel. I get disappointed because on the youngins actions but im sure its like life. A cycle. Im sure the oldskoolers hated me when i was 13 at their parties.

Heck when i was 16 and someone asked me if i wanted to dose i said whats dose? and they said you know e.. and i said eeeeeeeeeeee??? whats the rest of the word?I didnt even know what e was or was short form for.

All I knew was raves had gereat music and everyone smoked weed and i thought that was cool just like that party on dazed and confused and that no one made fun of me for being skinny, or blonde, or having a speech problem and for once people emberaced me as a new kid.
Someone after moving 22 times and 6 different schools i never felt once as a child
I'm feeling social butterfly mode right now..

If we could get 1000 people at an event again we could really start to pull some crazy shit off. At just 10$ a head that gives you a 10,000$ budget, which is a pretty nice budjet

actually back in the days i don't even remember people or my friends taking pictures.. once in awhile someone would have a cheap one use kodak///i had my school agenda covered of artifacts tho.. pretty typical.. and haha i just had shaved my entire head and had 10 000 freaky face piercing so im actually happy there's no pic of that.

i have such a great memory that i don't need pictures but now with the time pass by i wish i could have those set recorded and see what i think..

i think Fishead might have pictureS of a party at the lab..

anyway i miss how back there the punk scene and all kind of others were hanging together..

well... I went to [ tribe.ca ] and made a thread askng for pics - [ www.tribemagazine.com ]

it's a big Toronto-based site where a lot of oldskoolers lurk - I figured someone involved with that Destiny party would see that post

and sure enuff, some guy posted a couple pics! no good shots of any deco..but I was just I was sooooo happy to see any pics from that night =) hopefully someone will post some more.

this pic of the chillout room pic kills me - lol ! I want more of these dodgy pics! gold. the music was sooo good in that chill room too

that party was super fun. In the main room during Cosmic Baby's set there was a huge stack of speakers - the soundwaves were intense even standing 30 feet away. I stayed well back from em, and still my ears were ringing a bit when I got home to bed...

and I saw some guy with no shirt on - high as a kite on E - climb up on those speakers and start hugging them until the security came and ushered him down. lol. I'm sure it felt good at the time, but damn... that *cannot* be good for the eardrums

yeah exactly. back in the day I never took pics, and honestly at the time it didn't even cross my mind to take any either. I was on a pretty tight budget too. back then I would have much rather spent my hard-earned money on some mixtapes instead of a camera and getting film developed - lol (mixtapes were a highly valued commodity back then).

but now, I wish I'd invested in a cheap camera and snapped at least a couple pics. cuz like you say, I pride myself on having a good memory - but 1994, 1995 is getting increasingly remote.. some pics or video would be great just to see and hear again how it really was at those nights
