My Audiophile USB has 2 stereo inputs and 2 stereo outputs (each is analog or digital).
Works very fine to listen to music and record mixes, but the lag is huge (cannot mix in real-time, and cannot monitor input !).
It also has MIDI input and output.
But it's very old!!!
I'm feeling at home! right now..

Older PCI-based M-Audio are great! (delta 44/66 audiophiles, etc) But, somehow, their nu products/external stuff is very average if you ask me (sound quality and stability too)

If you can get your hands on an EMU 0404, even better for the buck: better A/D conversion; not talking about specs here (both will offer at least 96KhZ/24 bits) but the conversion on EMU cards is just great (Xlink AD/DA used on pro-tools HD systems) they also have on board DSP plugins that aren't bad at all! The mixer/interface of the EMU (itself) is a bit more complicated than regular M-Audio/Avid/etc etc, but it's a good bargain for the buck. Don't be scared by the "creative soundlab" label, they bought E-MU off when the cie was dead.

Still, EMU used to make grrreat samplers, stronger filters/FX than AKAI (Z-Plane filters and possible FX expansion that would it make it up to Ensoniq DP/4):

back then and Creative re-opened their shop because there was some buisness op there. dunno about the clock, but trust me, sounds great and it's cheap and more than good for a 2 I/O analog 2 I/O spdif basic system(+MIDI).

flo: about your lag: is it on a PCI (or straight to board) or is it FW/USB(1.1 or 2) ?
I'm feeling fuck it all. seriously right now..

just thought about this... wouldn't it be dope to have a friggin send/return and/or insert for analogue inserts directly on the soundcard (I mean, as part of the dsp mixer... so no buffer)

Mik does the fireface do that?
I'm feeling lovely right now..

Yes. That is how we used to patch a few effect chains (outboard gear):

Floating output to physical output to effect rack, back in an analogue input, all done on TotalMIX DSP so the only latency you'd get is on the DAW's input.

i record in SoundForge ..

it has a nice little meter, so i can test the levels before recording. i put everything fairly low, so that it doesn't peak, but still let it record at at least 3/4 of the volume meter, so i don't miss any frequs. i can change the volume after if necessary.

then, i can export it as a wav, or mp3 of most any quality, and the mix itself is also saved in the program.

easy ;)

the hard part is actually getting my sorry ass to record a set :p
I'm feeling you up right now..

If you know how to manage any soundcard with a proper mixer/direct monitoring manager, any card can have near zero ms. latency inserts.

I find most USB cards suck for production use, but I haven't used many newer usb 2.0 ones (in theory there is ample bandwidth). Firewire cards, on the other hand, I find are quite good. The USB 1 cards were horrid, I sold that card off fast.
I'm feeling meow right now..
