Helllo, was working on a new track and wanted to get some feedback on my bass line.
Basically I am trying a new bass sample and want to know if it sounds good on different systems... so! what is it like? good bass?

If you don't mind, listen to it again, and try to lose all the expectations. I'm not going for a psytrance bassline at all, so try to be extremely subjective...

seriously tho.. the mix is all weird. I don't think that bass goes very well with that kick for starters .. it might just need some eqing but the two don't match or sound nearly as strong as they could with alot more tlc. That style bass reminds me alot of the earlier experiments in psytrance circa 1997 ala been there done that.

It really sounds like the kind of bass line you'd expect from someone who was writing their first song using some cheezy vst presets.. not from some one who's actually been making music for longer than most people I know including myself and should clearly know better without having to ask public opinion on a site where hardly anyone actually produces or can provide an educated analysis beyond the usual monkeytalk. You want to know how it sounds on other systems??.. get the fuck up and go fucking listen to it on other sound systems ..and.. make up your own mind.

thx to to everyone for their input! :)

I got three sound systems at home if you count my computer, the song songs pretty well balanced on all three. I do need to rework the bass a bit as one effect I put on it changes it's volume too much, louder isn't necessarily better of course...
as far as it sounding old school, that's very probable, I am getting sick of the copycat bass sounds I am hearing in every single psy track from every single psy artist. that won't stop me from using it again in the future, but I felt like a change was necessary to clear my mind, and I really like the heavyness and sonic qualities this bass sound gives compared to most bass samples. It is a preset in the Discovery VST that I changed around a bit.

as far as getting opinions, as much as I like the criticism from other producers, I like getting feedback from people who don't have their heads stuck between two monitors with all their important knowledge. an outside perspective is really important to me as I find myself juding my own music based on rules I've made for myself that shouldn't always imply in the first place... but even at that, I've spent a total of three hours making that track, and it probably reeks of that to you Kalan, so congrats on picking up the scent... regardless. I want new bass!

It sounds, I dunno.. If this is a complete track (or semi-complete) then there's something off with the highs and mids.. All I'm hearing is reall loud highs and high-mids, and some low bass with no real "oomph"

it's just not a good sound,ok so it's not psytrance i get that, but listen to any other style of techno out there it's all eq'ed well and everything fits and it's all PHAT.

this is so dry and the bass and kick just don't relate together and the bass just sounds really beginner.

If you don't think so then i suggest you train your ears more or better?

^^^^^^Where did that came from?!

I'd spend a bit more time on mixing but after mastering, i'd be a very decent track.

if you want to move away from the typical psytrance sound I'd consider maybe going outside the norm and using more than 3 notes in a bassline and throwing in some funkiness.

Most psytrance has no bassline, just a 1 note bass sound.

Here is a bassline

granted it's a 1973 recording and from a youtube video but you get the idea. It's fucking simple but explosively awesome. That's a bassline as opposed to simply a low frequency sound that fills in the space between drum hits.

As for your tune, it's a basic squarewavy sounding bass which is pretty dull sounding unless you spice it up with some eq'ing/analog simulation whatever will make it jump out more and throw some more attack on it... Otherwise it just sounds kind of wavering and dull. If you are using a dull kind of sound you need to make up for it by throwing in some great grooves.

oh and just so I don't get slapped as a noob I've been doing music for 12 years and studied it in school for a while, and made a lot of tunes and done some recording/engineering (admittedly student work) with real music with actual mics and real singers and pianos and shit.

listen to chameleon, all the way through, the bassline barely changes at all.. it is like techno/electronic/whatever music, but it never gets old. Aside from the great solo's on top, a lot of funk music is pretty repetitive.

about the same honestly.. The problem isn't the bass, it's the mixdown; the bass is barely percievable, the click on the kick is WAY too loud.. As it is now the bass just sounds like a 303 farting too low to make any actual perceptible notes..

The highs at least seem to be a little better than before, the hats in the other one seem to come out a lot more and be a lot louder, but as it is now, it sounds like you've got a track playing, but the click on the kicks is twice as loud as the rest of the tune.
