In the year 2000 I went to Underworld (when it was at the end of the orange line) and sold my X hardcore X collection. Fuck it, I was done, the end.

Since then, I have bought much of the collection back from eBay at many times the price.

You're going to regret it dude.
I'm feeling belligerent right now..

yea, i've heard that story before, well except most people dont actually buy back the tracks, they just reminisce about them etc.
but yea, i still have the 1st turntable given to me, from my dads late best friend, and even tho i took it apart to take the springs out, so i can scratch on it, and after 6 years of heavy usage, it no longer performs nearly as good as it could, its tucked away in my closet for personal value and reasons....

and after seeing one of my friends sell his dnb collection and regretting it, along with wtv else he sold in the lot, theres something about vinyl that grows on you. its something that one piece can tell a million stories, just looking at it. where it came from, how hard it was to find, who owned it before you, what partied it might of played at etc.

money is important sumtimes, in fact, most of the time, but i still own my entire hip hop collection that i started buying since 95, and my whole house and pre electro-house electro collection, that started sumwhere in 2000, and dont regret a single penny of it.

imagine the kids who start djing in 5 years from now. its kinda scary... the impact of a dj playing an ALL vinyl set sumwhere...
HOLD ON TO THE GEMS!!!

vinyl is not dead

p.s. im not a huge dubstep enthusiast, but some of the tracks coming out are just out of this world. you can already hear breaks and electro producers directly biting off of some of those dubstep basslines!

if everyone loved dubstep, and it was the norm in every club on the main, i dont think the people making it and playing it would be proud to call it that anymore, and would come out with some other radically new genre to keep the heads in check...

fuck the haters who ask thier friends whats cool and whats not cool!
I'm feeling your nuts right now..

what he said

right before I moved here, I had decided to give my record collection - which is worth a fortune in dollar value, and priceless to me - to a trusted dj friend in Toronto to keep for me, cuz at that point music didn't mean much to me. this winter I almost sold a large chunk of it cuz, once again, I just didnt care about DJing

needless to say I'm glad I hung on to them. there are some records that took me soooooo long to track down - they are so scarce, it would take me years or hunting to find them again, if ever... and no doubt at many times the price I paid for them. records I paid 5 quid for in 99, now go for retarded sums of money on ebay and discogs. it is insanity

anyway - not my collection, so do what ya gotta do. I just know I'm glad I kept mine. I refuse to part with some of these gems until I get to mash them down on a good mix CD and encode them to .wav ...it would be a sin not to =)

I'm thinking of switching to Serato.

I think buying 15$ singles made sense when most DJs actually got paid good money to play tracks. Now that everyone and their mom is a DJ (including myself, you, you, and your friends), it's time for me to find a more cost-effective and space-effective way to be a DJ.

As for the sound quality debate, its pretty much bullshit when you think about it. I think it was Bliss who said people didn't care if you're playing an mp3 or an OG 45rpm pressing, as long as you play the tune (see: crowd of 600 at Cafe Campus, or any crowd of hipsters dancing to tunes downloaded from blogs). Very few places have a decent, well tuned soundsystem nowadays anyways... And I'll never play at the world-class-equipped Stereo cause I don't spin house.

End of half-drunken rant.

word. I'm also thinkin of encoding my collection to .wav and switching to serato, or whatever superior technology that will no doubt be released soon. has so many possibilities for playing samples during sets, etc. I will still keep and play my vinyl as well though

Dubstep ain't all as bad as I thought, and I'm glad the evolution has led to some really amazing music. When I started getting into it I heard a few colossal bores playing I guess. Kode9 with Spaceape was pretty fucking original and amazing, and Wally for one spins amazing dubstep. I've also heard you do it pretty fucking well there Guillaume, so I hope you stick to it a bit. Maybe the old records just aren't as interesting as the new ones you're grabbing, but yeah, I'd say keep em.
