well, dubstep is in a way an offshoot of DnB (and Garage), so it's ended up going with the whole retarded dubplate culture, where lots of tunes are only available on vinyl and in limited runs..
I'm feeling airconditioned bliss right now..

A good copy of WAR001 (dubstep remix of Bob Marley's War) goes for around 50-100 bucks and it's one year old. As I'm speaking there's ONE for sale on there for 50GBP.

A good copy of Skream's Traitor which came out in 2005 is worth probably 30-40 bucks. It's the first release on Ital, and there's one in my lot. Again, ONE for sale, look at the price.

Plus all the stuff in my lot that's from 2003 is worth at least 25 bucks a piece.

So yeah, "lol".

hmmmmm... there seems to be confusion about what a dubplate actually is. a dubplate can *only* mean an acetate that has been cut - with permission - of an unreleased tune. if you don't have permission, or do something with it that you shouldn't, then it is just stolen intellectual property and this can sometimes have serious consequences... many people nowadays either don't know about this unwritten code or don't care. Dubplates are expensive and rarely seen nowadays, so calling anything else a dubplate cheapens it for those who do still cut them.

this is what I take "dubplate culture" to mean: lots of hot brand new tunes are only available on dubplate. the dubplates are kept exclusively for the producer and select DJs to play (enter lots of elitist DJ politics). then, long after the tune is fresh, it is finally released on vinyl or CD to the general public - if ever. that's what I take it to mean.

I understand that now when people talk about dubplate culture they mean unreleased tunes on .wav, .mp3 etc, that are only available to a chosen few. the next step would be a testpressing, which is pressed on vinyl but only available to a few elite DJs. next from this would be a limited run vinyl release. this is not a dubplate, nor is it unreleased. it's just a limited run, and can be acquired by anyone if you have good contacts and the willingness to hunt it down.

Depending on which artist and which labels... dubplate culture is still quite present in the dubstep scene (yeah acetates that play like... 50 times) and yeah all we get here is the stuff once it is out of the very limited promo runs (the kinda stuff that just hits a couple of shops in LON)... truth is, if you get your hands on some whites here in mtl you probably had to fight for it and dig relatively deep...
I'm feeling dope right now..

oh I totally agree dubplate culture is alive and well in dubstep, D&B, and formerly UKG etc. and I'm all about white labels and one-offs that other people can't get on mp3.

jungle in Toronto was totally like that in the early days. back in the early 90s it was this poor stepchild that house and techno DJs looked down on. but you had a handful of dedicated DJs fighting over the very limited gems that Medicine Muffin was getting shipped over every week. for some hot hot tunes, only a couple DJs in Toronto would own a copy. you'd really only hear it on their mixtape or at their live sets - and most of the time nobody else had a clue what it was. as far as new jungle/D&B goes, gone are the days ... however, Toronto has never stopped loving the original jungle, and a lot of DJs there still fiend for those crazy old whitelabels from the past

I personally like dubplate culture and having to strive for the hottest tracks... separates the soundman from the soundboy ;)

for sure... but yeah now a days, dubplate culture has evolved with the technology and the challenge is different... It still is great to hear djs drop massive new tracks no one has heard before... and whats I love so much about dubstep is that every dj in montreal has pretty specific taste and mixing techniques... I think every set sound different and every dj has something original to show

totally! that was one of my motivations to start spinning in the first place. by the late 90s a few big Toronto DJs had a stranglehold on the scene, and were only pushing a certain very generic sound. most of the other DJs and scenesters worshipped them. so you'd hear DJs playing the same big tunes in a different order for the next 3 months.

I can't stand that kind of sheep-like conformity. much nicer to see DJs who are forging their own path =)
