2 Bookings, Same Weekend, Same City = Disrespect???

If your attracting the same people at both gigs then a promoter might be unhappy since by booking DJs you expect them to bring a certain amount of people to your event. I been on about this before, DJs think it's the promoters job to advertise the party. As someone who has promoted events, I think it's also the DJ who should be advertising the event they are playing at also. It's only worth it to have someone play if they will bring people to your event. If you play two times in the same area then you split the people you would bring to the event. Now without people, then event will fail. So it's important for a promoter to book people who will bring people to the event.

This is not all the time, I can understand in Europe going from one city to another on the same weekend hitting up a bunch of places, but we live in Canada, and the next closest big city to Montreal is Quebec or Ottawa, and some cities in the states I never been to. Montreal does not have a scene like those cities in Europe so you gotta make the most of whatever you can here.

I also understand a DJ wants to play out at as many places as possible, it's good for business and to make your name known. You just have to understand some promoters don't want to have an event with no people at it. And some DJs wanna play at as many places as possible, and some rather play once every month in order to maximize the amount of people who will travel and pay to see them for a given day.

Anyways both people have valid points... You are both right in your thinkings. As civilized people, make a good decision! Hehe... Man it's morning it sucks...

Yeah, it's not like either of them are your booking agents and you went to get these bookings behind your agent's back. If they're your friends, they should even be HAPPY that you're getting bookings and more known.

You're a DJ, not a personal slave. It's not like you gave up a gig spinning at Eminem's birthday party to go spin for an ICP jam.

it depends...

if i booked an out of town dj as a draw for an advertised event and was paying their ride + fee's and they went ahead and double booked them selves to play another advertised event that will affect the attendance of my jam...

i'd tell the greedy bastard to go fuck them selves and probably back away from working with that person in the future...

but if its local and yer playing for a chicken dinner and some cab fair and just tryin' to get yer name out...

let a playa play yo!!!

i've double booked myself on occasion... and it was never a problem.

I gotta agree that a dj can accept as many gigs he wants, as long as he can play at all of them. It would be one thing if you were an international headliner on tour, but you're not, you're a local trying to make a name for yourself by playing as many gigs as possible. The only thing I think you shouldn't have done is naming the promoter involved. Sure, some people will have figured it out, but it's respectful not to bring out any names on a public message board.

I remember when Mad used to play 3 or 4 times every weekend, and he was one of the most popular local djs. Competition is something promoters have to deal with, and as a dj, you're booked for the timeslot you're given. You're free to do what you want with the rest of your time, unless you agreed to a contract saying otherwise before you were booked.
I'm feeling back to the groove right now..

Playing for free, no, actually, at a LOSS, for a friend's birthday party, is doing them a favor. He's not getting payed for the birthday party, which is understandable if you're doing it for a FRIEND, including the fact that he's paying for his gas to come from Granby. And let's not forget that learning to spin has it's costs, be it turntables, CDJs, a mixer, and either vinyl or CDs or MP3s depending on what you play out with.. It's not exactly a cheap hobby/passtime.

And then the person, who's suposed to be a FRIEND, and who's not paying him at all, has the balls to go and say that he's being dissrespectfull because he's taking a paying gig the next day? I'm sorry, but that person is the one who is being dissrespectfull and unapreciative of the SERVICE their *FRIEND* was supposed to be doing them, especially considering that there are already at least 80 people attending and that you're charging between 10-25$ admission depending on when you get your tickets, and the next-day gig that's paying only costs 10$/person, it's obvious that someone is more into things for the money and throwing a grandiose party than they are for having a FUN jam with FRIENDS.

Is Psydraulix getting this kind of bullshit treatment also? 'cause he's playing at both parties, too.

I was 'contacted' regarding all this but I think everything was cleared up in a reasonable manner. Fact is, what's good for a promoter is NOT the same as what's good for a DJ, they are very contrasting indeed.
Noah summed it up pretty well; I'm a local DJ, I am not bringing 100$+ to this party on my own, the PARTY itself (including my timeslot of course) is what's going to bring the people out.
In any case, I am going to do a fucking great set at both parties so you all better come to both damn it!!!

Look,
saying a verteran DJ is not worth 100$ is disrespect.
Taking more than one booking on the same night can be seen as disrespect if both parties offer simular styles of music.
It can also be seen as disrespect if the promotor is your friend...
It is disrespect towards your dj by not paying him and making requests (orders).
It is disrespect to a dj to threaten him after asking him to play.

in this case, it seems both parties are disrespectful to eachother.. work it out..

but remember this.. Kurse will not be the cause of your parties success (and i don't mean this in a bad way at all). People will go to the party because of the concept and because of the djs as a whole.

the moral of this story ??
Leave the poor kurse alone OR make him sign a contract next time OR book your friends next time !!!
I'm feeling beckers @ rewire 3 right now..
2 Bookings, Same Weekend, Same City = Disrespect???
