Not really, seeing as how the PS3 will not be backwards compatible at all.. On top of the 699 US$ price tag, as well as the game price being 70-85 US$...

It will be backwards compatible. There are apparently 38 ps1 games and 9 ps2 games that don't play properly on the ps3.. but out of thousands. If any of those games are games I possess I won't sell my ps2 but if I don't have them, which is pretty likely considering the large volume of games, I will sell it.

Sakamoto's comments came after Sony published a list of games which are not compatible with the new silver slimline PS2 console, due to go on sale in Japan next month. A total of 38 PSone and nine PS2 games were listed, including Tekken 5, Hitman: Contracts and Resident Evil.

And that's just the PS2 with a diffrent firmware. The PS3 uses entierly new/diffrent CPU architecture. It's like trying to run old PowerPC Mac apps on an Intel computer; the WHOLE CODE needs to be completely re-written.

It uses the same language... they just change certain things like when any language moves up a version, they defintiely don't need to re-program it, if they did no old games would work at all. Did anyone actually expect it to be 100% backward compatible?

Uhmm, no, it doesn't, they've been having problems programing it since the dev kits came out because the whole CPU architecture is 100% diffrent from anything else. It doesn't even have "graphic card" or "sound card" components, just 3 identical cell processors that handle everything.

Though, with some reading, turns out that I was wrong about the backwards compatibility, as they're just putting a PS2 cpu inside the thing because there is NO WAY they could ever get the new cell procesors to work any PSO/2 game without completely re-writing the code from the ground up.

Exactly! they been saying it would be for years. And It does! You just proved my own point. It's impossible to rewrite the code of a game after it's released, it's as simple is that. That's what backwards compatible means.

anyway, trust me there will be a lot of cheap ps2's when it comes out, I have/had a list of friends just looking for people to reserve theirs.

PS2 was sub-par from the start but that's just my opinion. I'd honestly be more enthusiastic to buy a 2nd hand original Nintendo if someone still had one in good / fuctioning condition.

At the pawn shop the (well) used console might cost you 100$, which is waay overpriced, so I suggest you get the clean and tested refurbished ps2 (with a game ;-). Used ps2s are risky, cause it might not read certain dvds or games or even both, and it might have a rusty disk tray and a damaged or well used lense. Although most parts are easily replaceable (ebay), buying one from a store will save you a lot of trouble. Maybe it's just me, but I find that consoles are personal - like underwears; you prefer to be the first one to wear them, LOL
I'm feeling tired - zombie style right now..
