you contradict yourself cus u said a guitarist only needs to learn his instrument while producrs has to learn every aspect. so in theory, it takes a producer a lot longer to master his shit yet your arguing that too.

you people are WEIRD lol

you keep putting words in my mouth. I haven't contradicted myself. A producer tends to know a medium amount of information in my subject areas , a musician tends to know alot of information in fewer subjects. It isn't that one knows more than the other , its that the information they know in reference to the subjects they apply to is spread out differently. Is this so hard to understand ?

Now having said this, which is theoretical , lets look at the real world and how it applies to both musicians and producers. Musicians do tend to have a more structured form of learning and as a result , tend to know more for the sole reason that music education has been contiuously structured to help people learn quicker. Production is a much newer art form and the ressources available are much more limited. So for that reason , i would say that musicians tend to know more because their form of education is just more accessible.

Now i suppose you are going to reply by saying , wait Rich , producers can learn music too , sure they can. But i did address this in an earlier reply in that you only have so many hours a day to learn and given a musician or producer spend that time learning , they will learn the same amount , just in different subject areas. Of course again this is theoretical because like i stated previously , music education is more accessible than education relation to the technical sides of production.

I think the level of knowledge tends to balance out for most producers and most musicians but i think as far as most EDM is concerned , well i would say it doesn't. EDM , for the most part , is pretty non mainstream and as a result , most of the producers making records tend to be a non professionals making a record here and there not really making a carreer out of it.

I mean you call yourself a producer , but could you actually make a song that wasn't EDM ? Do you know enough about music , enough about chords and key changes to be able to make something that wasn't EDM ? I'm not trying to discredit edm because i can guarantee you most musicians would have no idea what the hell side chaining is, i just don't think you realise the knowledge required to make other forms of music.

I just think you are a little naive about how things work in the world. I remember your post about how the producer should do everything but again , as a mainly EDM oriented guy ( correct me if i'm wrong ) i just don't think you really understand how things work and why they are that way.

Take film scoring. The composer makes the score , but 10 times out of 10 , he hires an orchestrator to orchestrate the music. The music industry is extremely competitive and subject specialisation is becoming more and more important. Why do you think teeam work in almost every aspect of multimedia is the norm. Why doesn't 1 guy make a video game ? IF you can't figure this out for yourself , let me help you.

You can't know everything about everything. It isn't possible. It isn't possible to play every instrument at a master level because there just isn't enough time in a day to learn all this. For this reason , the industry tends to use the best people in each position. Now if you wanted to be lets say the best pianist , would you want to practice 8 hours of piano a day or 4 hours of piano and spend the other 4 hours learning to cook. Hopefully you understand the point i'm getting at. There is a certain level of specialisation required for certain fields in the music industry.

well professionals in freeform don't actually make money so i wouldn't use the word "professional"
I'm not saying he sucks completely but his mixes are extremely muddy , his arrangements are extremely cluttered and his over mix is amateurish. Not trying to attack him , i just think he needs to be a little more humble. He isn't all that and a bag of chips.

And as far as your comments about 2 years not enough to be a"producer"

here is a track i made after about 2-3 years of producing released on vynil in 2001 blah blah...
[ www3.telus.net ]

it is possible and happens alot and i could make you a list of about 20 guys i know that had vinyl releases in 2-3 years.

So sure most producers won't be good after 2 -3 years but thatsbecause most producers suck. I wouldnt' say you suck but i woudn't even think about pursuing production as a career and i would definately loose that elitist attitude you exhude until you stop sucking a little less.
Mise À Jour » madforbrad a écrit sur Thu 3 May, 2007 @ 1:00pm
PS : that track was made before the whole sample cd accesssibility in regards to EDM.This was before vengeance sound sets in a time where every sound you used was pretty much made from scratch.
Mise À Jour » madforbrad a écrit sur Thu 3 May, 2007 @ 1:07pm
PPS : here is a link to the second EDM song i ever made after about 1 year messing around. [ www3.telus.net ]

It already sounds better than your mixes ? So ya , my goal is not to show how good i am because really i think the music i posted sucks balls and i don't make EDM anymore but its still oceans apart from the amateur stuff you make. So get off your high horse.

i used to make trance , well i've made pretty much every genre and i think the problem with trance is that it sort of peeked in 2001 - 20002 and well it has really stagnated. After that i quit making it because well i felt everything that cold be said with that genre as been said. That isn't to say trance isn't or shouldn't be around m i think you will find most trance artists sort of infused more electro elements into their music. I suppose you could say that about everything , the mixing of genres is becomming pretty standard. I mean look at noisia . One of the leading dnb producers and they release a breaks track as well which is killer as well.

I personally think the area of music making the createst strides in EDM at the moment is jungle and perhaps the new electro comming out from guys like justice and shit.

i wish i could say jungle wass making the most creative strides... but aside from top quality production standards i think a good chunk of the dnb pot has been stagnating these days.

though there are a few artists that are stirring the pot in different dirrections like noisa, freestylers, john b, amon tobin and pendelum, but for the most part its a big sea of the same old shit.

i love dnb alot more than you would know from my posts, but these days the only guys catching my attention are the guys who are moving it to completely different direction.

but i guess that goes with any genre really...

there is some really cool electro comin out too... but alas its also tough to dig it out in the sea of cheese as well.

breaks has always been my bag because when it starts to stagnate (as it often does like every other genre)its so easy to dip into other genres and find something that suits your fancy to work into a set without being labeled as an outcast to the sound.

mind you i'm talkin' strictly from a dj's perspective and not on the production tip.

but your alot less likely to get dissed as a breaks dj for playin' rock, hip hop, house... or even trancey shit at a gig as you would if you were.. say, a proggy trance or house dj trying to mix dnb or minimal techno.

anyway... music is a personal thing and to each his own...

as far as this thread goes...

being a producer/ dj hasn't got anyone laid since the turn of the century...

but a good well rounded musician is always sure to get some panties in a bunch.

and isn't that what really matters?
I'm feeling warm unicorn jizz right now..
