I'm in, Spirit. It's a good idea. There are some serious hitches to it, but with enough determination and a strong game plan, you can pull it off.

A few of the problems you'll have to deal with :

1. In-fighting. Ravers are not known for their tact or their long, healthy attention spans. For a co-op to work, it requires a great deal of maturity and the ability for members to reach a consensus on important issues. That isn't to say it's impossible, but we are dealing with kids who consume copious amounts of narcotics, suffer from a variety of mental disorders, hang out with criminals, and in general... Have more issues than national geographic. For a co-op to be effective, it'll need some strong leadership and the tenacity to confront a stream of never ending drama.

2. Money. Angels might be needed to make this work; financing will be tricky. For the co-op to run, it would need a tight, realistic, business plan. This project runs the real risk of becoming a pipe dream. Gotta keep it real - be more critical about it than even the most severe pessimists. If it can pass all the shit tests and critcisms, it can happen. You just need to know how to answer this one big question : where will the money come from. Answer that, and your project makes it.

3. Location. Like someone pointed out, the cops will be all over this place unless you play your cards right. The slightest fight with a neighbour, and you might find yourself in a real struggle for survival.

What you want to start sounds a lot like L'X, but for the raver community. We can use them as a benchmark.

Oh, and one thing: renting the venue for cash should be a last resort. It is much, much, less profitable than other arrangements. You'd make more money having people teach under the co-op banner than renting out the space to individuals. I rent out the studio I work at for $23hr (2100sq ft.), which is nothing compared to the money brought in when the studio members use the space themselves. When we rent it out for a party (about $450), we make much less than when we throw a party ourselves. You can make money from rentals, but they should be a last recourse. Rent the space only when you don't have a use for it, and when you don't have a use for it, ask yourselves why not.

Obviously, renting it to members of the co-op is a different thing than renting it to non-members ;)

I'll have more to say on the subject later. I hope somethings come of it though. It'd be nice to have a freakish venue where artists and party kids can hang out, kick back, hone their skills, make some music, whatever.

Yes it's a generalization and a sombre one, but it is realistic one too. Not only am i an pessimistic type of person but i have been in the "scene" since the nearly very beginning.

Thus i've have seen all kind of good intentions. I worked with some of best, honest people in old school days. No one is infallible, people get greedy, they envy and people do backstab. I'm sorry but a raver's life isn't all plur. That's a misconception. There's a dark, oily infectious underside.

Rave isn't a subculture anymore. It outgrew itself and everyone has their own vision of what is good for the scene. There isn't any communications between promoters and too many parties are thrown in a span of short time. It diluted the culture and people become jaded faster.
Networking was king in the old days with just a telephone and flyers, we used to know what raves were happening in Boston and New York.

The scene splintered into many communities with each their own agenda.
Raving was a way of life when we were kids. For the kids of today, it's just phase of their life. The novelty of one scene, one unity is long gone.
---------

however, good luck for those who get involved with this endeavor. My best wishes.

Damn straight. This is one of the biggest problem the co-op will face: drama. Lots and lots of drama. In-fighting, backbiting, ass raping. However, if you build the co-op expecting to deal with shit, if you say "man, we're going to do this, even though we know there's going to be some real head aches to deal with", if you treat it realistically instead of with rose colored glasses, than you can make it work.

You're just going to need a really huge pair of balls and a nose that doesn't mind smelling all the scene-related bullshit.

i don't like drama. people with drama please keep back. :p
was there a lot of drama at l'x?

a place that doesn't aim making money
a place where everyone can participate in
a place that encourages people's growth
a place where PLUR is the code to respect

i like the idea of having activities there during the day. like at a rainbow gathering everyone can teach what they know, invite people to follow workshops. i'm thinking yoga, circus, martial arts, tribal dance... and then these people participating in the workshops could be a tribe making appearances at the parties. how cool it would be to have an acrobatic or a belly-dancing show in a rave... :)

and a store where we can sell rave-related clothes, accessories, arts...
and of course a bar, with fair-trade coffee and chai and healthy home-made energy drinks. like the stuff people from entheolab make, with fruit juices and herbal extracts.

Raw? Come on it ought to be barbq'd seriously. At least sauteed! El you're leading hilarious to the maximo.

The serious folk in the scene are a large group of the long term promoters who have been around and have put lots of effort into its lifespan, these people, the djs, the deco artists, the community stores and extras folk who cater massages, beverages and glowgear to the events to name a few.. they are all a tad more serious about the future of this scene than the youngest ravers. Those youths are fresh and having a "cool party" and a reduced fare is all they'll care about at first, they won't even attend votes on things until voting becomes important to them..

A community operated scene would be run by the dedicated individuals, those who have a real interest in whatever aspects they focus on and the proven track record for responsibility. There are many of these individuals in this scene and I know that the whole purpose we get together is to get along so I'm certain we can get along in this case.

Anne thinks we ought to start seeking out a space, at least in a non comittal sort of way, so I suggest we all keep our eyes open for possibilities.. Please provide any addresses you din that you think might be suitable for inclusion in a business plan.. If possible take some photos of the exterior of the buildings and provide the phone number of the real estate agent.

I'd like to organize a meeting of intereested parties sometime in the next month or two, suggestions on a meeting date and time? Cafes are good with me.. by this time we will have more information gathered in this thread and filtered into a more suitable document for review and discussion.

Is anyone interested in the creation of a disucssion group for this topic? Noah would you perhaps sticky this thread?

Plus the place I envision is much more than a community center, it'd be a community, a place for artists to live too, we'd hopefully be able to take over an entire say.. 6 story building if we could in order to really do things.. think big people, think outside the box.

BUT I AM NOT! :p
i like the feel of this idea.
now i don't know about all the things it implies, but i think the basics of it is to have a place that would serve as a center for the rave community. and the first two things that should come is WHERE and HOW we gonna pay for it.

same here :)
i think the church idea was pretty good, also ; and i've been told that churches in montreal are being more and more left out because no one goes to anymore... is that true ? i mean, would it be possible to get a hand on a [room of a] church ?

this wouldn't happen if we make sure all the people getting seriously involved in the "management" have a genuine "good vibe"

every body wants to control a place like this...Every body think they know what to do...It's not like these hold hippies ways of thinking...PLUR...LOVE...BLA BLA BLA...And when you're talking about money...forget it...

A place that is too much open mind will be close soon...

And to open this cost a lot...

Anyway..it's a nice dream...maybe after 2012...

so you believe in that 2012 thing... it's not gonna be paradise par magie à cette date-là. la route est longue et we've got to MAKE IT HAPPEN, by being together and learning to harmonize. i don't think avoiding situations where we have to learn to harmonize is the way to get somewhere.

we need positive attitudes please! :)

Seriously.. it sounds nice.. but is ultimately a pipe dream, I'd almost be sure of it... in order to get it off the ground you'd need like a 5 year business plan, starting out with promoting events, getting a following, building a rep, etc etc... otherwise people will just ignore you. A friend of a friend of mine opened up this awesome little vegan co-op cafe in verdun, amazing food, good prices, bla bla bal.. it's doing horribly, because nobody gives it enough support. Business is rough, co-ops are often rougher.
